Decoration Challenge

Brief

This is a challenge for players who have at least some experience playing the base game. It focuses on decorating the temple as it is being built.

Requirements

Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic Period and Teotihuacan: Shadow of Xitle are needed to play this challenge. This challenge is also compatible with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period.

Setup

Modules Setup

Use the following modules: Height of Development (M2), Architecture (M4).

You may additionally use the Priests and Priestesses (M1) module, but this is not mandatory. If you use this module, you must also follow its special setup rules.

You may also use the Seasons of Progress (M3) and Development (M5) modules, but this is not mandatory.

If you are playing with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, any of its modules except Expanding the Empire (M9) may also be used.

Use the Expert Pyramid setup found in Late Preclassic Period, but do not use the alternative Pyramid scoring rules.

Board Setup

Do not shuffle the Action Boards. Instead, place the Action Boards exactly as in the following image: (see the printed board setup image in the rulebook)

During steps 9 and 10 of setup, place all Pyramid tiles (on both the Construction (8) Action Board and on the main game board) face down.

Technology Setup

Do not randomly select Technology tiles, instead select the following: 01, 05, 07, 09, 12, and 16. Follow the rest of the regular Technology tiles setup.

Player Setup

If you play with Priests and Priestesses (M1) module, during setup, do not use any of the following Priest or Priestess tiles: 04, 08.

Special Rules

  • When performing the main action of the Construction (8) Action Board:
    • All Pyramid tiles are placed face down (meaning, there is no way to match icons for additional Victory Points or Temple Advancements).
    • The Pyramid tile scoring is updated as follows:
      • Score 1/3/5/7 points depending on the level the Pyramid tile was added to (as described in the base game rules).
      • Advance on the Pyramid track as usual.
      • If the tile was added to any space along the outer edge of the Pyramid:
        • Score 3 additional Victory Points and advance 1 space on a Temple of your choice (except the orange temple).
      • Otherwise:
        • Score 3 additional Victory Points or advance 1 space on a Temple of your choice (except the orange temple).

Solo support

  • If you play using Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, use the Alternative Teotibot Movement (MS1) rules.
  • If you play using Priests and Priestess (M1), Teotibot chooses Chantico (S05). You may choose any, except 04 and 08 as noted above.
  • Teotibot's resolution of Construction is unchanged from the base game rules.
  • When Teotibot successfully builds a Decorations tile due to its corresponding action tile (not due to Chantico's ability) it advances on the Pyramid track an additional time (essentially matching the ability of Technology #12).

Pyramid Challenge

Brief

This is a challenge for players who have at least some experience playing the base game. The Action Boards are set up so that players can easily build the Pyramid, and the game end is likely to be triggered early due to the finishing of the Pyramid.

Requirements

Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic Period and Teotihuacan: Shadow of Xitle are needed to play this challenge. This challenge is also compatible with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period.

Setup

Modules Setup

Use the following modules: Height of Development (M2), Architecture (M4), Development (M5).

You may additionally use the Priests and Priestesses (M1) module, but this is not mandatory. If you use this module, you must also follow its special setup rules.

You may also use the Seasons of Progress (M3) module, but this is not mandatory.

If you are playing with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, you may also add Altars and Shamans (M8) plus Obsidian (M6).

Board Setup

Do not shuffle the Action Boards. Instead, place the Action Boards exactly as in the following image: (see the printed board setup image in the rulebook)

Technology Setup

Do not randomly select Technology tiles, instead select the following: 00, 05, 07, 15, 17, and 20. Follow the rest of the regular Technology tiles setup.

Royal tiles setup

Do not randomly select Royal tiles, instead select the following: 02, 03, and 05. Follow the rest of the regular Royal tiles setup.

Player Setup (2-4 players)

If you play with Priests and Priestesses (M1) module, during setup, skip the steps awarding player cocoa. All players start with 10 cocoa instead. Before players receive their Starting tiles, perform the following steps:

  1. Place the following Priest and Priestess tiles on the table: 02, 03, 06 and 09:
  2. Bid for Priest and Priestess tiles, using the starting cocoa:
    • a. Select a player at random, that player must bid 1 cocoa to become the first player.
    • b. Continue clockwise around the table, each player having the option to either bid more than the current high bid or pass.
    • c. When all players but one have passed, the player who won the bid must pay the required amount in cocoa and become the first player, at the same time choosing one of the still available Priest and Priestess tiles.
    • d. Repeat the process until every player has a Priest or Priestess tile.
  3. After each player has been randomly dealt 4 Starting tiles, in turn order players may choose to pay 2 cocoa to be dealt a 5th Starting tile. In such a case, players may still only select 2 Starting tiles. (The printed text reads "Staring tile"; corrected here to "Starting tile".)

(The following bullets are printed without a heading in the right-hand column of page 4, after the Player Setup steps and before Gameplay changes. They concern Teotibot, the solo opponent.)

  • Do not give Teotibot a Priest / Priestess tile.
  • No change in starting resources for you. Teotibot receives 2 additional Gold.
  • Shuffle the following Priest / Priestess tiles together: 04, 06, 07, 11, 12 (last two only with Expansion Period).
    • Place two of them face up in front of you.
    • Shuffle all starting tiles, and place 2 of them randomly on each of the Priest / Priestess tiles.
    • Choose one of the two Priest / Priestess tiles, and receive the Starting tiles placed on them. This replaces your normal way of selecting Starting tiles.
  • The gameplay changes above are still in effect. Additionally:
    • Gold is wild (same way as Obsidian) for the Teotibot. When determining if Teotibot has "X or more" of a given resource, any Gold the bot has should be included in this count. When spending resources, Teotibot always spends its Gold last.
    • Whenever the Teotibot reaches a major step on a temple, discard one of the available Discovery tiles from there (select randomly, if any). Then, the Teotibot scores 3 Victory Points. This is instead of receiving the printed reward.
      • This is only for the Temple track. It does not modify Mask Collection action, or Teotibot's interactions with Major Discovery tiles (if using Expansion Period).
    • Like you, the Teotibot does not need to pay for tiles during its Mask Collection action. It simply takes the mask it wants (selecting as described in the base game solo rules).

Gameplay changes

The cost of all Mask Discovery Tiles is decreased to zero (no cocoa, no resources) regardless of each Mask's printed cost.

If playing with the Altars and Shamans (M8) module, this change does not affect the price of Major Discovery tiles.

The length of each Eclipse is reduced by one step. To implement this, the light Calendar disc should start the game on space "1" of the Calendar track and, after each Eclipse, be set to "1" (instead of "0").

Solo support

  • If you own Expansion Period, use the Alternative Teotibot Movement (MS1) rules.
