Toughest Challenge
Brief
This is a challenge for the most experienced players. The Action Boards are set up in the most challenging way possible, so you can expect final scores lower than average.
Requirements
Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic Period and Teotihuacan: Shadow of Xitle are needed to play this challenge. This challenge is also compatible with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period.
Setup
Modules Setup
Use the following modules: Priests and Priestesses (M1), Height of Development (M2), Architecture (M4), Development (M5).
You may additionally use the Seasons of Progress (M3) module, but this is not mandatory.
If you are playing with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, you may add the following modules: Expanding the Empire (M9) plus Obsidian (M6) OR Altars and Shamans (M8) plus Obsidian (M6). Do not use both options.
Board Setup
Do not shuffle the Action Boards. Instead, place the Action Boards exactly as in the following image: (the printed board setup diagram is not reproduced here)
Technology Setup
Do not randomly select Technology tiles, instead select the following: 02, 05, 09, 13, 17, and 18. Follow the rest of the regular Technology tiles setup.
If you're using Obsidian (M6), replace Technology tile 05 with 5½.
Player Setup (2-4 players)
During setup, skip the steps giving the players starting cocoa. All players start with 8 cocoa instead. Before players receive their Starting tiles, perform the following steps:
-
Place the following Priest and Priestess tiles on the table: 04, 06, 07, and 10.
-
Bid for Priest and Priestess tiles, using the starting cocoa:
a. Select a player at random, that player must make an opening bid of one or more cocoa.
b. Continue clockwise around the table, each player having the option to either bid more than the current high bid or pass.
c. When all players but one have passed, the player who won the bid must pay the required amount in cocoa and become the first player, at the same time choosing one of the still available Priest and Priestess tiles.
d. Repeat the process until every player has a Priest or Priestess tile.
-
After each player has been randomly dealt 4 Starting tiles, in turn order players may choose to pay 1 cocoa to be dealt a 5th Starting tile. In such a case, players may still only select 2 Starting tiles.
Royal Tiles Setup
Do not randomly select Royal tiles, instead select the following: 03, 04, and 07. Follow the rest of the regular Royal tiles setup.
Solo Support
- Do not use Height of Development (M2) when playing solo.
- If you play using Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, use the Alternative Teotibot Movement (MS1) rules.
- You do not receive any the 8 additional cocoa at setup beyond what your starting tiles give you. There is no change in the Teotibot's setup.
- You can choose any of the four previously shown Priest/Priestess tile, without bidding.
- If you choose Xochipilli (P10), Teotibot chooses Mictecacihuatl (S06).
- If you choose Ehecatl (P07), Teotibot chooses Metztli (S01).
- If you choose Xolotl (P06), Teotibot chooses Itzpapalotl (S03).
- If you choose Oxomoco (P04), Teotibot chooses Tlahuzcalpantecuh (S02).
Temple Challenge
Brief
This is a challenge for experienced players. It introduces a new victory condition and requires the players to advance on the temple tracks to claim victory.
Requirements
Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic Period and Teotihuacan: Shadow of Xitle are needed to play this challenge. This challenge is also compatible with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period.
Setup
Modules Setup
Use the following modules: Priests and Priestesses (M1), Height of Development (M2), Seasons of Progress (M3), Architecture (M4), Development (M5). Additionally, the Expert Setup Variant rules are in effect (for the starting Pyramid tiles).
If you are playing with Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, add Obsidian (M6) and Mansion (M7). You may add either: Expanding the Empire (M9) OR Altars and Shamans (M8), but do not use both options.
Board Setup
Shuffle all Action Boards (2–8) and place them randomly around the game board.
Temple Bonus Setup
Use the following Temple Bonus tiles, randomly assigned, one each, to the four Temples: (the four tiles are shown only as images in the printed rulebook and are not reproduced here)
Technology Setup
Do not randomly select Technology tiles, instead select the following: 08, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20. Follow the rest of the regular Technology tiles setup.
Royal Tiles Setup
Use Royal Tile C08 along with one random tile from each of the A and B categories.
If you're using modules from Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, include tile A10 as well, plus one random tile from the B category.
Season Tiles Setup
Use the following Season tiles, in order: 07, 05, 03.
Player Setup (2-4 players)
During setup, skip the steps giving the players starting cocoa. All players start with 9 cocoa instead.
-
Place the following Priest and Priestess tiles on the table: 01, 03, 05, 06, and 10. (If playing with any of the modules from Teotihuacan: Expansion Period, tiles 11 and 12 may also be used. In this case, shuffle all 7 tiles together before choosing 5 of them at random.)
-
Following the Starting Tile Draft variant rules, place a number of Starting tiles on the table according to the number of players:
- 2 players: 6 Starting tiles
- 3 players: 8 Starting tiles
- 4 players: 10 Starting tiles
-
The players will now bid for drafting order using their starting cocoa. This is an open bidding process. The first player to pass will take the highest numbered Player Order token (based on the number of players), and so on, until all players have a Player Order token.
-
In order of the Player Order tokens, the players will now take turns drafting exactly 1 Priest or Priestess tile and exactly 2 Starting tiles. When it is your turn to draft, you may select either, as long as, at the end of the draft, you end up with 2 Starting tiles and 1 Priest or Priestess tile.
-
The first round of drafting goes in ascending order (from 1 to 4). The second round goes in descending order (from 4 to 1). The final round goes again in ascending order.
-
After this process, randomly determine the first player. Give that player the "1" Player Order token (with remaining Player Order tokens being assigned clockwise).
Special Rules
- Even if 2 or more workers Ascend during a player's turn, only advance the light Calendar disc once.
- To be eligible to win the game, a player must:
- Reach the Temple Bonus space of 3 (or more) Temples.
- Score at least 180/160/140/120 Victory Points (1/2/3/4 players).
Solo Support
- If you own Expansion Period, use the Alternative Teotibot Movement (MS1) rules.
- Do not give Teotibot a Priest / Priestess tile.
- No change in starting resources for you. Teotibot receives 2 additional Gold.
- Shuffle the following Priest / Priestess tiles together: 01, 03, 05, 11, 12 (last two only if using Expansion Period).
- Place two of them face up in front of you.
- Shuffle all Starting tiles, and place 2 of them randomly on each of the Priest / Priestess tiles.
- Choose one of the two Priest / Priestess tiles, and receive the Starting tiles placed on them. This replaces your normal way of selecting Starting tiles.
- See the special rules below, they still apply. If you fail to meet the eligibility targets OR the Teotibot meets or exceeds your score, you lose as usual.
