Set Up

1. Define Roles

  • The Role Cards are selected based on the number of players, (as shown on the table), and shuffled, with 1 dealt to each player.
  • Players look at their own Role Card without revealing it, placing it face down in front of themselves.
  • This information is secret until the entire game is finished.
  • If there's an unused card, return it to the box without looking at it. (Depending on the number of players, this may be the case).

2. Distribute the Secret Chambers

  • Select the amount and composition of Chamber Cards based on the number of players (according to the table).
  • Return the rest to the box.
  • The kept Chamber Cards are shuffled, with 5 dealt to each player.
  • Players now secretly look at their own 5 chambers, then shuffle and place them face down in a row above their own role card so that no one (including themselves) knows what the cards are.

3. Determine the Starting Player

  • The player who last found a pot of gold is the starting player. If no one has ever found a pot of gold, then the game ends immediately and everyone loses. Alternatively, the youngest player can start...
  • The starting player takes the Key Card, puts it in front of themself and is now called the "Key Player".

Gameplay

1. Playing a Round

  • Players begin by discussing their roles and what chambers they have in front of them. Of course, anything a player says may be false, as they may bluff to try to get the win for their team.
  • When the starting player is ready, they choose a fellow player's Chamber to open by placing the Key Card in front of it.
  • The player whose card was selected reveals the Chamber, placing the card in the center of the table.
  • That player also becomes the Key Player, and repeats the process, selecting a new Chamber.
  • All players may continue to discuss and suggest which Chamber should be opened, but the Key Player always decides and makes the selection for themself.
  • Adventurers should be looking for Gold, while Guardians want the Traps revealed.

More Gameplay

Important

  • Gameplay relies heavily on discussions during the game. Through discussion, the Key Player should be led to uncover the Chamber Cards that are conducive to each player's goal.
  • Adventurers want to find all the Gold Chambers. With fewer chambers to choose from as the game goes on, it becomes harder to avoid the hidden Fire Traps. They must cooperate with each other in order to secure a victory.
  • Guardians are protecting the hidden Gold Chambers, and instead want the Fire Traps or Empty Chambers revealed. To this end, Guardians should bluff, misinform, and misdirect the Adventurers, leading them astray or to their doom.
  • Reminder: Though players may say anything they like and maintain false identities, it is forbidden for players to reveal their Role Cards before the game ends!

2. End of a Round

  • A round ends when the number of Chamber Cards revealed equals the number of players in a game. (Example: 5 cards in a 5 player game) A card does not have to be revealed in front of every player.
  • Afterwards, the remaining face-down Chamber Cards are collected, shuffled and redistributed. Each player receives 1 less card than in the previous round. (1st round = 5 cards, 2nd round = 4 cards, 3rd round = 3 cards, and 4th round = 2 cards) The players then again look at their own Chamber Cards, shuffle them, and set them face-down in a row in front of their own role cards.
  • The last player to have had one of their Chambers opened starts as Key Player in the next round.
  • All Empty Chambers, Gold Chambers, and Fire Traps are placed in separate stacks at the end of each round, to show how many of them have already been discovered. Doing this gives information to players, and facilitates gameplay in future rounds.

Game End

  • If one of the following situations occurs when a Chamber Card is revealed, the game ends immediately:
    1. The last Gold Chamber was found. The Adventurers win!
    2. All the Fire Traps in the game are revealed. The Guardians win!
    3. After four rounds, not all the Gold Chambers have been found. The Guardians win!
  • Then the players reveal their true identities, and celebrate! (or not…)
