Overview

A card game for 4 or more players aged 10 (8) years and up. Duration: 10 - 30 minutes.

Contents

66 cards with 6 different terms each (in 4 languages). Game instructions.

Idea and aim of the game

Players paraphrase a given term in teams. To do so, two players form a sentence, taking turns at adding a word each. The other players try to guess the term being paraphrased.

Preparation

  • Prepare a sheet of paper and a pencil.
  • Agree on the language in which to play.
  • Pick a player to start the game. This person shuffles the cards, with the chosen language face down.

Hint: The cards remain in the pile during the whole game so that nobody can recognize the terms of a given card by looking at its reverse side.

  • The first player takes the pile and holds it in his hand so that he can see the first card showing the terms in the chosen language.
  • Together with his left neighbour he builds the first explicators' team, both of whom may see the card.

How to play

  • The player sitting to the right of the first player says a number between 1 and 6 and in this way chooses the term that the explicators' team has to paraphrase without agreeing on what to say.
  • Now, both explicators build one sentence together. The first player starts with the first word (he may only say one single word!). His partner then continues the sentence with a second word (he may only say one single word, too!). Afterwards, the player to begin adds a third word and so on.
  • The two explicators continue to build the sentence in turns. The sentence must be grammatically correct.
  • The sentence should not consist of more than 10 words. The explicators may neither name the sought term, nor a part of it, in any language.

Example: term "WATERBED"; first player = FP; partner = P; FP: "A" - P: "place" - FP: "to" - P: "sleep" - FP: "filled" - P: "with" - FP: "liquid".

Hint: The challenge is to paraphrase the term together without communicating a method of doing so. Each player may have very different ideas on how to best paraphrase each term.

  • All the other players simultaneously try to guess the term and can call out at any time.
  • As soon as a player guesses the term, he receives one point. The two explicators also get one point each.

Suggestion: If you don't want to write down the points, you may also distribute coins, little stones, matches etc.

  • If the explicators' team finishes the sentence without it being guessed, guessing can continue for a short time. If nobody finds the term, nobody receives any points.
  • Afterwards, the explicators' team changes. The player to the left of the last starting player now receives the pile and builds the new explicators' team together with his left neighbour.
  • Discard the card with the old term.
  • The last starting player says the next number and joins the guessing team.
  • The new explicators' team paraphrases the next term in the manner described above.

End of the game

  • After a number of rounds fixed at the beginning of the game, the game finishes, e.g. as soon as each player has chosen a number twice.
  • The player who has the most points wins.

Variant for players aged 8 years and up

For players of this age group, you should only use the two first terms on the cards as they are more suitable for younger children.
