Components

  • Dice: 6 dice. Each die has numbered faces (1 to 4) and two Doll faces (a single doll and a double-doll).
  • Boards: 5 shrine boards, labeled 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Shrine 11 is the Shrine box.
  • Box: a lid and a bottom. The lid is used as a dice tray. The shrine 11 board is placed into the bottom box.
  • Cursed Dolls: 44 dolls. Although faces on the dolls may differ, treat them as if they are all the same.
  • Rulebook.

Setup

  • Cursed box: Place 6 dice inside the box.
  • Shrines: Place all the shrines on the table as shown. They are labeled 7 to 11. Place 1 Cursed doll on each shrine (except shrine 11).
  • Cursed Dolls: Each player receives 10 Cursed dolls (8 in a 5-player game). The Cursed dolls are placed visible in a pile next to each player, known as their stash. All unused dolls are placed in the Shrine box (shrine 11).
  • Players then decide who they think is the most strongly cursed, or by rock-paper-scissors, etc., and hand the Cursed box to that person to begin the game.

How to Play

  1. Roll the dice. Pick up and roll all 6 dice into the Cursed box.

  2. Select dice. Choose one value (that hasn't already been set aside) from the dice results, and remove those dice from the box and set them aside. If there are multiple identical rolls, you must take them all.

  3. Choose your fate. Choose to either Continue or Stop. You can only choose Stop if the total sum of the dice is 7 or more; otherwise, you must continue rolling.

    • Continue: go to step 4.
    • Stop: go to step 5.
  4. Continue. If the player chooses to continue rolling, steps 1 to 3 are repeated. However, the dice set aside cannot be rerolled, and only the dice remaining in the box can be rolled.

Important: When dice are taken out in step 2, the dice cannot be the same value as any dice that have already been set aside.

Failure to Break the Curse: If you're unable to take any dice in step 2 (i.e., you rolled the same values as ones set aside), or if the total sum is not 7 or more after all 6 dice have been set aside, the curse is not broken and the player busts. They must take all the dolls from the shrine with the most dolls. If tied for most, choose either one.

  5. Stop. Once the player has decided to Stop rolling, OR if they have set aside all six dice, they sum their set aside dice. Depending on what the total is, the situation changes:

    • Total 7 to 10: The player places dolls from their stash into the shrine matching the total rolled. The player adds enough dolls to the shrine so that the total number of dolls in the shrine is equal to the number of dolls rolled. If there are more dolls in the shrine than dolls rolled, the player must, instead, take dolls from the shrine equal to the difference. If the shrine is empty and 0 dolls are rolled, the player doesn't take anything.

Example

  1. Throw 1 (Roll): The player rolls all six dice. The player selects 4 from the rolled dice and removes it from the box. The roll is not more than 7, so they must roll again.
  2. Throw 2: They roll the five remaining dice in the box. Two double-dolls are selected from the rolled dice and are set aside. The total sum remains 4, so they must roll again.
  3. Throw 3: They roll again. The 3 is chosen. The total sum is 7, so the player can choose to stop. However, there are four dolls in shrine 7, and since the number of dolls equals the number of dolls in the roll, the player cannot remove any of their dolls, so they choose to roll again.
  4. Throw 4: If the player takes out a doll die, they could place a doll in shrine 7. Instead, they take out the 1. The total sum is now 8. Then, if they roll a 2, they could place a doll in shrine 10, and they would be able to get rid of four of their dolls.
  5. Throw 5: The player rolls the final die and rolls a double-doll. Dice with the same value as ones already set aside cannot be chosen. They've already set aside two double-doll dice, and thus they have busted. The player takes all the dolls from shrine 9 (or they could choose shrine 7 since they are tied for most), finishing their turn.

Stop example (page 9 of the source): Using the example on page 7, the player instead decides to Stop on the fourth roll with a total sum of 8. There are three dolls in shrine 8. Since the total number of dolls in the roll is 4, the player can only put 1 doll into the shrine. The player then gives one of their dolls to another player since the value 1 has been set aside.

End of Game

When a player finishes their turn, all dice are returned to the Cursed Box and passed to the player to their left, starting again from step 1. The game ends as soon as a player starts their turn and they have no more dolls in their stash. That player is the winner.

  • The other players may decide their ranking based on the number of dolls they have remaining in their stash.

Important: The game ends not when a player runs out of dolls, but when it is their turn again and they still have no remaining dolls in front of them. The other players must try to transfer their dolls to them before that happens.

FAQ

Q1: In the case of Stop, if the total number of dolls is 2 and there are 3 dolls in the shrine, do I receive a doll? A1: Yes. In order to add dolls to a shrine, you must exceed the number of dolls already in it.

Q2: I didn't roll any dolls but I rolled more than 7? What happens now? A2: In this case, all the dolls in the rolled shrine must be taken (unless it's 11 or more, then no dolls are taken).

Q3: I busted on my very first turn, but all the shrines have 1 doll on them. What do I do? A3: All of the shrines have the same amount of dolls on them so you may choose to take dolls from any one of them. Remember, if you ever have more than 10 dolls, place any of the extra dolls into the Shrine box.

Q4: Can I transfer dolls to a player that already has 10 dolls? A4: Yes, but these dolls will immediately be placed in the Shrine box, since a player can never have more than 10 dolls.

Q5: I managed to roll double-dolls on all six dice. What happens now? A5: Because the total sum of dice is 0, and there isn't a 0 shrine, you have busted. However, it is recommended to go for an exorcism, just in case the dolls really are cursed.

  • Total 11 or more: Total the number of dolls rolled. The player places that many dolls from their stash into the Shrine box (shrine 11).
  • Transferring Dolls. The value 1 has the power to transfer dolls to other players. If you were able to successfully place dolls into a shrine, you may also give dolls to one or more players equal to the number of value 1 dice set aside, as long as you rolled enough dolls.

Important: Each player may only have a max of 10 dolls in their stash at one time. If ever they were to receive an 11th doll, it gets placed into the Shrine box instead.
