Overview and Goal
Collect fruit on carts, lay it out on your tables, and score points based on the number of fruit cards and the number of the table each lies on. The player with the most victory points wins.
Components
- 72 fruit cards: 24 strawberries, 16 figs, 16 bananas, 8 pineapples, 8 watermelons.
- In a 2-player game, remove from the deck the cards with this icon.
- Fruit type.
- The dots show the number of cards in the deck: 3 dots - 24 cards, 2 dots - 16 cards, 1 dot - 8 cards.
- Card effect.
- 5 simple and 5 special cart cards.
- The maximum number of fruit cards that can be placed on the cart card.
- Effect of the special cart card (see Special Carts variant). By default, a special cart can hold no more than 3 fruit cards.
- 25 table cards: 5 blue (1-5), 5 yellow (1-5), 5 pink (1-5), 5 green (1-5), 5 red (1-5).
- Taco the Thief card
- Granny card
- Scoring pad
Setup
- Each player lays out in front of them the 5 table cards of one color in order, from 1 to 5.
- In the center of the play area place as many cart cards as there are players. Return the remaining cart cards to the box.
- In a 2-player game, remove 18 fruit cards with the 2-player icon to the box.
- Shuffle the fruit cards and place them in a face-down pile. Count 15 cards off the top of the pile (face down), place the Granny card on top of them, and put these 16 cards under the bottom of the fruit pile.
- The player who most recently ate a fruit takes the Taco the Thief card and places it in front of them.
Round Order
1. Distribute the fruit cards onto the carts
The player with the Taco the Thief card is the leader; they distribute fruit cards onto the carts during the round.
At the start of the round, the leader must place their Taco the Thief card on one of the cart cards.
Immediately afterwards, the leader takes the top fruit card, looks at it secretly from the other players, and performs one of two actions:
A. Keep the fruit card and take any cart card.
OR
B. Place the fruit card face up on any cart card.
The leader continues these actions until every player has taken one cart or until all carts are full.
Rules of conduct for players during the round
As soon as the leader has placed the Taco the Thief card, the other players may act without observing turn order.
- At any moment of the game, even when the leader has taken a card and is thinking about their action, any player may take any one cart with the cards on it.
- Players may take carts even if they are not full.
- No more than 3 cards (including the Taco the Thief and Granny cards) may be on a cart card. The leader must place cards so that they are visible to all players.
- The leader may take the fruit card they have just drawn together with a full cart. They can thus get up to 4 cards. In this case the leader must show the fruit card they took into their hand.
- After taking a cart, the leader must continue distributing fruit cards onto carts for the other players. They will lay out their own loot on their tables later.
- The leader must stop if all cart cards are full. If only full carts remain on the table and the leader has a fruit card in hand, they must return it to the top of the deck. Each player who does not yet have a cart of fruit must then take one from the table (whoever is faster).
As soon as every player (including the leader) has taken one cart, proceed to laying out fruit on the tables.
Example
Yaroslav is the leader. He takes a fruit card, which turns out to be a fig. He can keep this card and take the cart with the Taco the Thief card. If he does so, he remains leader in the next round. However, if he takes a different cart, he gets 4 fruit cards at once. While he thinks about his move, Varvara takes the cart with a pineapple and the Taco the Thief card. Since the remaining cart is full, Yaroslav must return the fig card to the top of the fruit pile and take the last cart with 3 cards.
2. Lay out the fruit on the tables
Each player decides for themselves in what order to lay out the fruit they received on their table cards. The fruit cards on each player's table cards must be visible to all players. Each table may hold only one type of fruit (with no limit on the number of cards).
General rules
- Place new types of fruit on free tables, starting with the first free table on the left.
- Place repeated fruit on the tables that already hold fruit of the same type.
Moving fruit
Some fruit cards have a moving effect. The player must apply this effect immediately after placing the card. To do so, the player takes all fruit cards from the table the effect applies to and moves them to the adjacent table on the left or right. If the adjacent table holds cards of another fruit, the two types of fruit swap places.
Moving is the only way to change the position of fruit cards on table cards after they have been laid out.
Fruit cards cannot be moved if the tables are not adjacent, for example from table card 1 to table card 5 or vice versa.
Example
Zoya took a cart with 2 banana cards and 1 strawberry card. One of her tables already has bananas and another has strawberries. So she must place the 2 new banana cards on table 1, and the new strawberry card on table 3. Thanks to the effect of the new card, she must immediately move the strawberry cards. All strawberry cards must be moved from table 3 to the adjacent table 4 or 2 (in which case the strawberries swap places with the figs).
Zoya decides to move the strawberry cards to table 4. Now table 3 is free, and if Zoya takes a pineapple or watermelon card in the next round, she will have to put it on table 3, as it is the first free table on the left.
3. End of the round
Players return the cart cards to the center of the play area after laying out the new fruit cards. The player who took the Taco the Thief card becomes the new leader and starts a new round.
End of the Game
When Granny's card appears from the fruit pile, the current round becomes the last in the game. If the leader took Granny's card from the top of the fruit pile, they must either take this card for themselves together with one of the carts, or place it on one of the carts.
The player who takes the cart with Granny's card is rewarded for warning their fellow tanuki of the old woman's approach.
After this round ends, the game ends. Players count their victory points.
- The value of each fruit card equals the number of the table on which the card lies (that is, each card lying on table 3 brings 3 victory points).
- The Taco the Thief and Granny cards each bring the player 3 bonus points.
The winner is the player with the highest total of victory points. In case of a tie, the player who got more bonus points wins. If the tie remains, all tied contenders win.
End-of-Game Card Effects
Note: In your first games, while getting to know the game, we recommend ignoring the end-of-game card effects.
Replacement
The number of the table card is replaced by the number in the fruit card's effect. The effect of this card applies to all fruit cards on that table. Each fruit card on this table brings 3 victory points instead of the number shown on the table card.
Favorite Fruit
Get 3 victory points for each set of:
- 3 strawberry cards
- 2 fig cards
- 2 banana cards
Or for each card of:
- pineapple
- watermelon
5 Different Fruits
Get 3 victory points for each set of 5 different fruits.
Bitten Fruit
Subtract 3 victory points for each card with a bitten fruit.
Scoring Example
- Table 1: 2 banana cards. They bring 2 x 1 = 2 victory points, but because of the "Bitten Fruit" effect 3 victory points are subtracted. Total: -1 victory point.
- Table 2: 5 fig cards. They bring 5 x 2 = 10 victory points. Thanks to the "5 Different Fruits" and "Favorite Fruit" effects the player also gets 6 victory points for 2 sets of 5 different fruits and 6 victory points for 2 sets of 2 fig cards. Total: 22 victory points.
- Table 3: 2 watermelon cards. They bring 2 x 3 = 6 victory points. Thanks to the "5 Different Fruits" effect the player also gets 6 victory points for 2 sets of 5 different fruits. Total: 12 victory points.
- Table 4: 5 strawberry cards. One of the cards has the "Replacement" effect, so each strawberry card brings 3 victory points instead of 4 (the number on the table card). The strawberry cards bring 5 x 3 = 15 victory points. Thanks to the "Favorite Fruit" effect the player also gets 3 victory points for one set of 3 strawberry cards. Total: 18 victory points.
- Table 5: 2 pineapple cards. They bring 2 x 5 = 10 victory points. Thanks to the "Favorite Fruit" effect the player also gets 6 victory points for 2 pineapple cards (3 for each card). But because of the "Bitten Fruit" effect 3 victory points are subtracted. Total: 13 victory points.
- Bonus points: the Taco the Thief card brings the player 3 bonus points.
- Player's total score: -1 + 22 + 12 + 18 + 13 + 3 = 67 victory points.
Variant: Special Carts
During setup, place the special cart cards in the center of the table instead of the ordinary ones. Their number must also equal the number of players; put the extra cards in the box. Special cart cards hold no more than 3 cards, except the large and small carts.
Large and Small Cart
The small cart holds no more than 2 cards. The large cart holds no more than 4 cards.
Cart with a Secret
The leader must place fruit cards face down on this cart, but Granny's card is still placed face up. Only the leader will know which fruits are on this cart.
Move Fruit
Applying this cart's effect is optional. If a player takes one of the carts with this effect, they may move all fruit cards of the one type indicated in the effect to the adjacent table on the right or left. As usual, if the chosen table already holds cards of another fruit, the player swaps the fruit cards.
Fruit Salad
Applying this cart's effect is optional. After the "Lay out the fruit on the tables" step, the player may remove from their tables any one fruit card of the type indicated and place it face down next to them in a fruit salad pile. If the removed fruit card has an effect, it is not applied. Each fruit card in the player's fruit salad pile brings 5 bonus points at the end of the game.
Solo Game: Try to Beat the Author
Hi, my name is Alexis. I am a mischievous tanuki and I love turning into ordinary objects. Take any object and put it on the table in front of you - that is me! My tastes change every day. Can you beat me for a whole week?
1. Setup
Choose a day of the week to taste or by the calendar. The condition for awarding Alexis victory points depends on it.
Put Taco the Thief's card in the box; it will not be needed. Then set up the game for two players, but do not take out the second set of table cards (Alexis does not need them).
2. Distribute the fruit cards onto the carts
You are the leader throughout the whole game. When you take a new fruit card you can always keep it and take one of the carts (no one will beat you to it). But if you place a fruit card on a cart, you must alternate carts. You may place the very first card on any cart, but you must put the second card on the other cart, the third on the first again, and so on.
Each time you place a card on a cart, check whether Alexis wants to take it (see the table below). Add up the total number of dots in the lower left corner of the fruit cards on both carts. If the number is sufficient, Alexis takes a cart according to the following preferences (choose the first suitable option):
- The cart with more watermelons and/or pineapples.
- The cart with more bananas and/or figs.
- The cart with more strawberries.
- If both carts hold equal fruit, you choose the cart for Alexis.
- If Alexis took a cart first, you may continue adding fruit cards to your cart until it is full.
- If you took a cart first, continue adding fruit cards to Alexis's cart until it is full.
- If both carts are full, first take a cart for yourself, then give a cart to Alexis.
3. Lay out the fruit on the tables
Return the carts to the center of the play area. Distribute your cards by the normal rules of the game. Alexis's cards are simply stacked in a pile; you may look through them at any time.
4. End of the game
Alexis scores victory points according to the table below and in each game gets 3 bonus points if he has Granny's card.
Table for each day of the week
| Day | Dot total at which Alexis takes a cart | Alexis's victory points |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 10 or more | 3 victory points for each fruit card |
| Tuesday | 8 or more | 3 victory points for each strawberry, fig or banana card; 7 victory points for each pineapple or watermelon card |
| Wednesday | 9 or more | 4 victory points for each fruit card |
| Thursday | 9 or more | 10 victory points for each fruit card with any effect |
| Friday | 10 or more | 5 victory points for each strawberry card; 4 victory points for each fig, banana, pineapple or watermelon card |
| Saturday | 9 or more | 6 victory points for each fruit card |
| Sunday | 8 or more | 9 victory points for each fruit card |
