Game Idea and Goal
Moving along the counters, you fill your shopping baskets with all sorts of junk. Then, using the large scales, you compare the weight of your purchases.
To win, the junk in your basket must weigh less than the control purchase, the "Purchase of the Day," assembled at the start of the game. Then, among the players who have managed this task, the one with the heaviest basket wins.
Components and Setup
First, join the parts of Aunt Trudel and, using the chains, hang the two scale pans from the counterweight. Then secure the assembled scales with the wooden bushing, which you insert into the hole in Aunt Trudel's hands. If the scales are not balanced, you can balance them by placing and moving the small mice on top of the counterweight until both scale pans stop at the same level.
Fill all 25 counters on the game board with junk. Each player chooses a shopping basket and places it on the starting position in the corner of the game board, next to the entrance. Place the die nearby.
The Day's Purchase and Placing Coupons
Before the game begins, one of the players makes the "Purchase of the Day": they roll the die and move their basket clockwise, starting from the entrance, by the indicated number of rows of counters. They then move the item lying directly in front of the basket (the one nearest the edge of the board) from the counter into the basket. Then the player rolls the die twice more and in the same way fills the basket with the junk lying at the edge of the board, taking it from the counter row they have reached. The three items obtained in this way make up the "Purchase of the Day." They are laid out from the basket in front of Aunt Trudel so that everyone can see them. The player who made the Purchase of the Day returns their basket to its starting position. Place one coupon on each of the three counters that have been emptied.
Illustration. Svetlana rolled a 6. She moves her basket along the edge of the game board by 6 rows of counters; then she takes the star. Now she rolls a 4, moves the basket forward and takes a cone there. Finally, rolling a 3, she gets a deckchair.
Svetlana places one coupon on each of the three empty counters.
The star, the cone and the deckchair form the "Purchase of the Day."
Players in the illustration: Anton, Irina, Vladislav, Svetlana. Entrance and exit are marked on the board.
How the Game Plays
Players take turns. The first player is the one who was weighed last.
Get ready to collect some junk!
On your turn, you roll the die. Then, according to the number rolled, you move your basket clockwise along the edge of the game board, from one row of counters to the next. Any number of different players' baskets may be opposite the same row. Now you perform one of the following actions:
- You may put an item (or a coupon) from the counter in the row you have reached into your basket. (If you already have a coupon in your basket, you cannot take another one from the shelf.)
or
- You return one of the items (or coupons) from your basket to an empty place in that row of counters.
or
- You exchange one item from your basket for one item from a counter in that row.
or
- You may perform a WEIGHING, if the row of counters opposite which you have stopped shows an image of the scales. You place all the items of the "Purchase of the Day," previously made, on the opposite scale pan. Now you look to see which weighs more...
Using a Coupon
You may perform this operation on your turn, in addition to your normal action. You may do this either before or after the action.
Exchange in the shop: You may return a coupon by placing it on the counter in the row you have reached this turn.
Example: using a normal action, Vladislav exchanges a crown from his basket for a ring from the counter he has reached...
...then he pays for a barrel with his coupon.
Exchange with another player: If you reach a row of counters where another player's basket already stands, you may pay them with a coupon. You put your coupon into their basket and, in return, take any item from their basket.
Example: Irina has reached the row of counters where Vladislav's basket stands. She places her coupon into Vladislav's basket...
...in order to take any item from him.
Go to the Weighing!
As soon as you have gone all the way around the rows of counters of the shop once, your shopping trip ends. You proceed to the weighing, leaving again through the door. If you rolled more than is needed to leave the shop, the remainder is not counted. In later rounds, you no longer move, but wait until the other players also arrive at the weighing.
Moving Backwards
Do you not yet want to go to the weighing? Then simply go back. However, you may do this only if no player is already waiting for you at the weighing, and you can reach the weighing right now using the number rolled on the die. If you do not want to go to the weighing, you move your basket backwards along the edge of the game board, counterclockwise, in the direction opposite the clockwise path, according to the number rolled. (In this case, you may also perform one of the actions described above with the row of counters to which you have returned.)
Players in the illustration: Vladislav, Anton, Irina. Exit and "Back" and "To the Weighing" are marked on the board.
Example: Anton rolled a 2. With this result he could go to the weighing. But he does not want to yet. Since there is nobody at the weighing yet, he may move backwards too.
Irina may also move backwards, but she is satisfied with her purchases and goes to the weighing. From this moment on, Anton cannot move backwards, because someone else (Irina) is already ready to check the weight of her purchases.
End of the Game
As soon as the baskets of all players have reached the weighing, you compare, one after another, in the order in which they arrived at the weighing, the weight of the items in your shopping baskets with the weight of Aunt Trudel's "Purchase of the Day." Coupons are not used in the weighing.
The player wins whose purchases weigh less than the "Purchase of the Day." If several players are in this position, the one among them whose purchases weigh the most wins. (To check this, simply weigh and compare the purchases of these players in pairs.)
Variant for the Youngest Players
Through the game "Tante Trudel Trödel," small children can develop their sense of weight. But to make the game simpler and clearer when children take part, its goal is changed:
- The player who acquires the heaviest items wins.
or
- The player who acquires the lightest items wins.
Before the game begins, you choose one of these criteria for winning.
