Game Materials
- 1 panda
- 4 markers and 4 rings (blue, yellow, pink, green)
Note: Before your first game, you must put each ring on the marker of the same color.
- 160 garden sheets: 40 sheets of the 2-panda difficulty sheet, 40 sheets of the 3-panda difficulty sheet, and 2 x 40 sheets of two different 4-panda difficulty sheets.
Game Objective
The players color in their garden by following the symbols and colors on the markers, trying to earn the most points at the end of the game.
Preparation
1 - A garden sheet is chosen out of the four available for the game. Each player takes a copy of the chosen sheet. Then, all players look at how points can be earned on that sheet: Each sheet is described in detail further on in this booklet.
Note: The number of pandas on the sheet gives an indication of its difficulty. For your first few games, we recommend the sheet with two pandas. Then, progress on to the sheets with three and four pandas.
2 - Randomly select the person who plays first, and place the panda and the 4 markers with their rings on them in front of that player.
Playing the Game
1 - The person with the markers rolls them into the center of the table. The results take into account the color of the marker and the symbol visible on the top of the ring. For example: pink triangle, green circle...
2 - Each player picks up a marker in turn, starting with the one who threw them and then going in a clockwise direction. They then color in ONE item on their sheet that matches the color AND the symbol on their chosen marker. If it is not possible for a player to color anything in with the results for the round, they do not take a marker and skip their turn.
3 - If the newly colored item completes an area with a ladybug, the player circles it and announces it to the others to let them know how the game is progressing. It is quite possible that more than one person will circle the same ladybug.
4 - When the round is over, the person who has the panda hands it to the person on their left, along with the four markers. It is now that person's turn to throw them and start a new round.
End of the Game
The game ends when any player circles their third ladybug. The other players finish the current round, and then everyone fills in the scoring area of their sheet and counts their points. The player with the most points wins!
Garden Sheet — Difficulty: 2 Pandas
This sheet features colored bamboo, a cloud, and a sun.
Coloring Rules
- You can only color in an item matching the color AND symbol of your marker.
- The bamboo must be colored from the bottom to the top. That is to say: the bottom section of the bamboo must be colored in before coloring in the next section, and so on.
- When the last section of a bamboo is colored in, the ladybug is circled, and it is announced to the other players to let them know where the game is at.
- The cloud sections can be colored in any order. When the last section of a cloud is colored in, the player chooses any bamboo and colors in two sections of it with their blue marker.
- The sun sections can be colored in any order.
Counting Points
- Each leaf on a colored bamboo section awards the number of points shown on it.
- The fully colored sun awards 5 points.
- Each ladybug that has been circled awards 1 point.
Garden Sheet — Difficulty: 3 Pandas
This sheet features colored bamboo, a pond, colored fish, and a sun.
Coloring Rules
- You can only color in an item matching the color AND symbol of your marker.
- The bamboo must be colored from the bottom to the top. That is to say: the bottom section of the bamboo must be colored in before coloring in the next section, and so on.
- When a player finishes coloring an area with a ladybug (the 5-point bamboo, the entire pond, the entire sun or the entire river), the ladybug is circled, and it is announced to the other players to let them know how the game is progressing.
New Rules
- The rays of the sun can be colored in any order. As soon as any player has colored all of the rays of their sun, the others players can no longer color their sun in.
- The sections of the river must be colored from left to right. If a player finishes coloring their river, they choose any color of bamboo and color in one section on each of the three bamboos of that color with their blue marker.
- A fish can only be colored if the river section it is on has already been colored.
- The sections of the pond can be colored in any order.
Counting Points
- Each leaf on a colored bamboo section awards the number of points shown on it.
- Each group of bamboo of the same color that is fully colored in awards the additional points on the sign (2 in the sheet's example).
- The fully colored pond awards the 7 points on the sign.
- Each colored fish awards the number of points shown on it.
- The sun awards 6 points for the player who has colored in the most rays, 4 points for the player with the second most, and 2 points for the third player. The others do not earn any points. In case of a tie, the tied players all receive the points for that place.
- Each ladybug that has been circled awards 1 point.
Garden Sheet — Difficulty: 4 Pandas (River and Lanterns)
This sheet features colored bamboo of four colors, three lanterns, four bamboo shoots, three ponds, and a river.
Coloring Rules
- You can only color in an item matching the color AND symbol of your marker.
- The bamboo must be colored from the bottom to the top. That is to say: the bottom section of the bamboo must be colored in before coloring in the next section, and so on.
- When a player finishes coloring an area with a ladybug (the highest bamboo of each color, all three lanterns, all four bamboo shoots and the three ponds, some of the river sections), the ladybug is circled and it is announced to the other players to let them know how the game is progressing.
New Rules
- The sections of the river must be colored from top to bottom. Where there are two river sections side by side, a player can only color in one of them.
- If a river section with one of these symbols is colored in, the player also colors in the item indicated with their blue marker:
- The top OR bottom of a lantern
- One section each of two different bamboos
- One of the three ponds
- The top AND bottom of the same lantern
- Two sections of the same bamboo
- The lantern sections can be colored in any order. When a player finishes coloring both sections of the same lantern, they cross out:
- the 2 if they are the 1st player to complete that lantern,
- the 4 if someone else has already completed that lantern before them.
Counting Points
- Each leaf on a colored bamboo section awards the number of points shown on it.
- The total number of leaves on the colored bamboo shoots is multiplied by the number of ponds colored in (3 x 2 in the sheet's example).
- Each group of bamboo of the same color that is fully colored awards the additional points on the sign (3 in the sheet's example).
- Each colored river section awards the number of points shown.
- A fully colored lantern awards as many points as the number that is not crossed out (4 for the 1st player, 2 for the following players).
- Each ladybug that has been circled awards 1 point.
Garden Sheet — Difficulty: 4 Pandas (Dragon and Fireworks)
This sheet features colored bamboo of two colors with lanterns above each group, party favors, a dragon, and fireworks.
Coloring Rules
- You can only color in an item matching the color AND symbol of your marker.
- The bamboo must be colored from the bottom to the top. That is to say: the bottom section of the bamboo must be colored in before coloring in the next section, and so on.
- When a player finishes coloring an area with a ladybug, the ladybug is circled, and it is announced to the other players.
New Rules
- The first sections of some bamboo must be colored in blue.
- Lanterns can be colored in any order.
- The party favors must be colored from top to bottom.
- Except for the blue sections, the dragon sections can be colored using any color. However, sections next to each other must be colored using different colors. The dragon sections must be colored from left to right. Important: It is not possible to go back! In the example shown, the blue section (the one with 2 points) can no longer be colored in. On the next turn, either the blue section with the bamboo bonus or the next regular section can be colored.
- When a dragon section that touches one of its feet is colored in, the player crosses out:
- The 2nd number if they are the 1st player to color it, or
- The 1st number if someone else has already colored it.
- When a player colors in one of the party favors or a dragon section with the bamboo-bonus symbol, they also color 1 section of any bamboo of their choice.
- The fireworks are divided into two parts: The trail and the bursts. The yellow sections of the trail can be colored in any order; the bursts must be colored by starting with the 1-point pink burst and then moving clockwise.
Counting Points
- Add up the points shown on the highest leaf of each colored bamboo section in the same group. Then multiply that by the number of colored lanterns above it. Do the same with the other group of bamboo and lanterns.
- Each colored party favor awards the number of points shown on it.
- Multiply the points shown on the last colored-in burst by the number of colored sections in the trail.
- The head of the dragon and the 2-point blue sections award the points shown on them if colored in. In addition, each foot that touches a colored section awards as many points as the number that has not been crossed out.
- Each ladybug that has been circled awards 1 point.
