Overview

For 2 to 6 players. Ages 8 and up. 30 minute playing time.

Sweetlandia is a city planning and acquisition game for two to six players (planners). In each round of the game, players bid to acquire different Locations in the city. Players earn Donuts (points) by choosing specific locations, combinations of locations, meeting the Mayor's Public Incentives, and meeting Private Incentives that the Mayor has set just for you!

At the end of three rounds, the Sweetlandia Planner with the most Donuts is the winner!

Contents

  • 36 Bidding Cards
  • 1 Mayor McSweet Bidding Card
  • 60 Location Cards
  • 20 Incentive Cards
  • 1 Score Sheet

Setup

Separate the Bidding Cards into piles by the candy variety in their top left corner. Each player takes one pile at random to create their hand of bidding cards. Put any remaining piles back into the box. Each bidding card has a different number between 1 and 36. Players should keep the contents of their hand hidden from one another.

Next, shuffle the Location Cards and place them in the center of the table. Then, do the same for the Objective Cards (the Incentive Cards).

Reveal the top two Incentive Cards. These are the Public Objectives that the Mayor has set for the first round of play. All players can earn Donuts by achieving these Objectives.

Next, deal one Incentive Card facedown to each person. This card is the Mayor's Private Incentive for each City Planner, and only the holder of that goal may use it to score. You may look at your Private Incentive at any time, but don't reveal it to other players until the end of the round!

Now, you're ready to start playing!

Playing Sweetlandia

The game plays through three rounds. Each round consists of the following: 5 Bidding Phases, a Scoring Phase, and a Clean Up Phase.

Bidding Phase

In the Bidding Phase, players use their Bidding Cards to decide who gets the first choice of Location.

Draw Location Cards from the pile, and turn them faceup until there is one more card revealed than the number of players. (For a three-player game, turn over four cards; a five-player game turns over six cards, etc.)

Note: If a planner builds an Everlasting Location, this location remains in front of that planner for the entire game and provides Donuts each round it remains built.

Each player chooses a Bidding Card from their hand to place face down in front of them. When all players have chosen a bid, all selected Bidding Cards are revealed.

Note: If a player builds the Mayor's mansion, that planner receives an extra Bidding Card - the Mayor McSweet Bidding Card.

Starting with the player who bid the highest number, each player chooses one of the revealed Location Cards and places the card in front of them.

Some Locations are highly desirable and offer special features, bonus effects, opportunities, or objectives when acquired. When you acquire a Location, follow the directions on your chosen Location Card before the next player chooses a Location.

Location Card parts: color indicator, Donut value, location name, directions. (Example: Cookie Cabin, Donut value 3, directions "If you have a Forest, acquire the top card of the Location Deck".)

Continue selecting Locations one at a time in descending bid order, until each player has acquired a Location OR until there are no more Locations left to acquire. A player must take a Location Card, if one remains, even if it's unwanted. In rare circumstances, a round may run out of Location Cards. Remaining players will not get to choose another Location.

After all players have acquired Locations, clear the table of remaining Location Cards. If all players have at least two Bidding Cards in their hand, begin another Bidding Phase. After the fifth Bidding Phase, players evaluate their Sweetlandia expansions and begin the Scoring Phase.

Scoring Phase

During the Scoring Phase, each City Planner earns Donuts based on the Incentives, Locations, and the Bidding cards they have played. Players do not earn Donuts from unplayed Bidding Cards.

Note that any number of players can achieve Public Incentives. Each player who achieves a Public Incentive receives Donuts. After evaluating their Public Incentives, players should reveal their Private Incentives. Only YOU can earn Donuts from your Private Incentive. Each player adds the Donuts earned from Public and Private Incentives to any Donuts earned from Location or Bidding cards played. This number of Donuts becomes a player's point total for the round. Remember to keep track of Donuts earned on the Score Sheet.

If this is the first or second round, go to the Clean Up Phase. If this is the third round, each player totals the number of Donuts earned in all rounds and the game is over. The Sweetlandia City Planner with the most Donuts wins!

If there is a tie, use the final Bidding Card in-hand as the tie breaker. The player with the highest card wins the game!

Clean Up Phase

After the Scoring Phase, shuffle all remaining Location Cards (excluding Everlasting Cards) and all discarded Location Cards into one pile. Remember, Everlasting Location Cards stay in front of the player who acquired them.

Gather up all of the Incentive Cards and shuffle them together. Deal two new Public Incentive Cards and one new Private Incentive Card to each planner.

Each player passes their Bidding Cards, played and unplayed, to the player on their left. Begin the next round, starting from the Bidding Phase.
