1 double-sided game board, 16 playing pieces (2 sets with 2 lions, 2 elephants, 2 zebras and 2 gazelles), Game Rules. 2 players, age 7+, 10 minutes.
Game Objective
Try to rule the Serengeti by positioning 4 of your animals in a row, eliminating 5 animals of your opponent or by blocking your opponent from moving.
Set Up
- Put the game board with the selected level face-up.
- Each player chooses a set of 8 animals in the same colour.
Play & Adapt
Each player in turn must either place a new animal onto the board or move one of their animals that is already on the board. The youngest player starts.
Placing a New Animal on the Board
Animals can only be put on the board on a free spot.
- Standard ('S') level: you can introduce any new animal on any free spot, except in the 4 corners.
- Advanced ('+') level: you can introduce new animals on any of the outer squares of the board, but not on the 4 central squares.
Note: Squares blocked for entry can be reached by moving the animals as described below.
Moving an Animal
In both modes, you can move the animals according to the following rules.
Elephants
- An elephant can only move 1 step at a time horizontally or vertically and ONLY if it can push at least 1 other animal that is in an adjacent field to it. Otherwise it cannot move.
- If there are more animals next to each other in the row it is pushing, all of them will be moved 1 spot backwards, so also the other animals from its own team. If, as a result of this, an animal gets pushed off the grid (into the river or into the ravine), this animal is eliminated.
- Elephants cannot push other elephants back, even when there are 2 elephants pushing against 1.
Lions
- A lion can only move 1 step at a time horizontally or vertically and ONLY if it can eat a zebra or a gazelle that is in an adjacent field to it, hereby eliminating the zebra or gazelle and taking its place. Otherwise a lion cannot move.
- Lions cannot eat elephants or other lions, but they are allowed to eat zebras or gazelles from their own colour.
- Lions cannot enter the board by eating a zebra or gazelle.
Gazelles
- Gazelles can only move if they can jump in a straight line horizontally, vertically or diagonally over any other adjacent animal to the first free space behind that animal. Jumping over 2 animals in the same direction is also allowed, as long as there is a free spot behind them. If there is no other animal adjacent to a gazelle, it cannot move.
- If, from that free space, it can jump again in another direction following the same rules, it can jump several times.
Zebras
- A zebra can move horizontally, vertically or diagonally in a straight line to a free spot, but only in 1 direction on each turn. It can take as many steps as it wants in the chosen direction until another animal blocks its path.
Note: An animal cannot move or jump out of the grid itself. Only elephants can push them out.
End of the Game - the Winner!
The game can end in 3 ways:
- A player aligns 4 of their animals in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row.
- A player manages to eliminate 5 animals of the opponent.
- A player manages to block their opponent from moving.
If you manage to end the game in 1 of the 3 above ways, you rule the Serengeti and win the game!
