Set Up
-
Place the game board in the center of the table.
-
Take out 10 golden waste cards from the waste cards deck, marked with a star symbol, shuffle and place them face down on the marked space on the game board.
-
Shuffle the remaining waste cards and place them face down on the marked space on the game board, composing a draw pile. Then randomly draw 12 cards from it and place them face down in sector II, and next 12 cards in sector III. Sector I remains empty.
-
According to the number of players, place the following waste processing facility tokens on the board:
- 2 players – 1 aluminium, 2 glass, 3 plastic, 4 paper and 5 biowaste tokens;
- 3 players – 2 aluminium, 3 glass, 4 plastic, 5 paper and 6 biowaste tokens;
- 4 players – 3 aluminium, 4 glass, 5 plastic, 6 paper and 7 biowaste tokens;
- 5 players – 4 aluminium, 5 glass, 6 plastic, 7 paper and 8 biowaste tokens.
Put the remaining waste processing facility tokens back to the box – you will not need them during this game.
-
Place all the waste processing profitability tokens in piles on the appropriate spaces on the game board.
-
The empty space in the center of the board is designed for the waste cards discard pile.
-
Each player receives a set of 5 waste processing facility boards (one of each kind) and a set of recycling/incineration markers, according to the number of players. Players can choose the following colors:
- 2 players – red and blue – a set of 12 markers per player;
- 3 players – red, blue and green – a set of 8 markers per player;
The exemplary set up diagram for two players is not reproduced.
Cards in the Game
Waste cards
There are five kinds of cards showing different types of waste in the game: biowaste, paper, plastic, glass and aluminium. The quantity of cards of each type depends on the value of each waste. Biowaste is the least valuable, so there is the most of those cards in the game. On the contrary, aluminium is valued the most, so the number of those cards is the lowest. In the upper left corner of the game board you will find the chart, showing the quantity and value of waste cards in the game.
Each waste card shows the type of the waste, the value of the card, and information about recycling and decomposition.
Note: In the bottom part of the waste cards you will find information about the time of decomposition of a particular waste (in years) and what it can be recycled into. It is an educational aspect of the game.
Golden waste cards
These are the most valuable cards in the game, which are processed in the same way as the regular waste. There are 10 golden waste cards in the game. During each round in the Littering phase one of those cards is added to the recycling pile in sector I (see Refilling of sector I). The game ends after the round in which the last golden waste card has been shuffled into the pile in sector I.
Note: The aluminium cards can only be found in the golden waste pile.
Note: Cards of the same waste type can have different values. It depends on the products the particular waste can be recycled into. For example tea and coffee dregs may be recycled into briquette. In that case they are worth 1 ecodollar. But when they are recycled into compost or fertilizer, the players get 2 ecodollars for them.
Garbage cards
They cannot be recycled. The players can only incinerate them in the incineration plants (see Incineration).
Toxic waste cards
They cannot be recycled, but they can be incinerated just like the regular garbage cards. When a player has such card in hand, he may immediately put it in the landfill in front of him. At the end of the game each toxic waste card in front of a player brings him 1 additional victory point.
Playing the Game
The game is played over 10 rounds (it ends after the round in which the last golden waste card was added to the pile in the I sector). Each round consists of 4 phases.
1. Littering phase
In a clockwise direction, each player takes 4 waste cards from the draw pile and chooses exactly one of them. Then the player places the chosen card in one of the following three places:
-
on the waste processing facility board of the adequate type (if he has the adequate waste processing facility token);
-
up in hand, and after buying the appropriate waste processing facility token on the waste processing facility board of adequate type;
Note: The player can have only 2 cards in hand at the same time.
-
in the landfill in front of himself, if he doesn't have the adequate waste processing facility token, or he doesn't have the free space on his board and he has already reached the hand limit. It is forbidden to take out the cards once placed in the landfill – at the end of the game they will bring negative points, unless they are toxic waste cards, which give victory points. There is no limit of cards in the landfill.
Each player places the 3 remaining cards face down in sector I (see Refilling of sector I).
Note: If all 4 cards drawn by the player are garbage cards, he discards them to the discard pile and draws 4 new cards from the draw pile. When the draw pile runs out, the discard pile is being shuffled and placed on the board as a new draw pile.
Refilling of sector I
At the end of the littering phase there should be exactly 12 waste cards and 1 golden waste card in sector I.
In a 5-player game, the players will put a total of 15 cards into sector I. In this case those cards are shuffled and 3 randomly chosen excess cards are discarded to the discard pile. In a game with less than 4 players the pile from sector I is refilled with cards from the draw pile.
Afterwards one golden waste card from the golden waste pile is added to the pile in sector I which is then shuffled.
Littering phase example
It's a two player game. Each player, according to the game order, draws 4 cards from the draw pile. The red player drew 2 garbage cards, 1 plastic waste card worth 3 and 1 biowaste card worth 2. Since he can choose only one of those cards, he decides on the less valuable biowaste, because he already has the adequate waste processing facility token on his board. Afterwards he places the remaining three cards on the pile in sector I. After the second (last) player performs his turn, the pile in sector I is refilled with 6 waste cards from the draw pile and one golden waste card, so there is exactly 13 cards in sector I pile.
2. Investment phase
The turn order in the investment phase changes each round. The player on the left of the player who went first in the previous round will start that phase in the next round.
The player can resign from investing before the beginning of that phase. In that case, he receives 5 ecodollars and is not allowed to make any investments in this round. He can continue to invest in the next round.
The players build and develop recycling plants, incineration plants and waste processing facilities according to the order of the game.
On his turn, the player may buy one of the limited resources and/or one or more of the unlimited resources.
The limited resources are:
- the first recycling plant in a row,
- the incineration plants,
- the waste processing facility tokens.
The unlimited resources are:
- the second recycling plant in a row,
- the waste processing profitability tokens.
Buying an incineration plant
To buy an incineration plant the player places the incineration marker on any of the free spaces in the incineration column. Only one incineration token can be placed on each space. A player can have any number of incineration plants. The cost of building the incineration plant depends on its row – the lowest row costs 6 ecodollars and the highest 10 ecodollars. The income that the player gets from the incineration plant depends on which sectors have been unlocked at the time (see Incineration).
Buying a recycling plant
To buy a recycling plant the player places the recycling marker on a free space on a row of recycling plants which is not yet occupied by other players. In each row there can be 2 recycling plants at most. In order to be able to place their markers in recycling plants in sectors I and II, one of the players has to unlock them by paying to the bank the unlock cost, shown next to each sector on the game board and marked with a padlock symbol. The cost of building the recycling plants differs between the sectors. In sector III it costs 3 ecodollars, in sector II – 3 ecodollars for unlocking and 5 ecodollars for building, and in sector I – 5 ecodollars for unlocking and 12 ecodollars for building.
Note: Players can occupy more than one row in each sector.
Example – buying a recycling plant: The red player wants to build a recycling plant in sector III. In order to do that he needs to pay 3 ecodollars (there is no unlock cost in sector III). The yellow player was the first who decided to build a recycling plant in sector II, so he needs to pay 5 ecodollars for the plant and 3 ecodollars for unlocking the sector. The blue player wants to unlock sector I – he pays 12 ecodollars for the recycling plant and 5 ecodollars for unlocking the sector. The green player also builds his recycling factory in sector I. Because it has already been unlocked, he only needs to pay 12 ecodollars.
Buying waste processing facility and profitability tokens
Each of the players has five different waste processing facility boards in front of himself: biowaste, paper, plastic, glass and aluminium. In order to be able to use them (put cards on them), he needs to buy the waste processing facility tokens. Each such token allows the player to place one waste card a specific type on the adequate board. The waste processing facility tokens should be placed starting from the upmost space on the right side of each of the player's boards. The player can also purchase the waste processing profitability tokens, which multiply the incomes from waste processing by 2, 3 or 4. The waste processing profitability tokens should be placed in sequence from x2 to x4, starting from the lowest space on the right side of each of the player's boards. The cost of the waste processing facility and profitability tokens is equal and changes only according to the type of the waste:
- 4 ecodollars for biowaste tokens,
- 5 ecodollars for paper tokens,
- 6 ecodollars for plastic tokens,
- 8 ecodollars for glass tokens,
- 15 ecodollars for aluminium tokens.
Note: On each of the player's boards there is only space for a limited number of tokens. The players choose themselves how many waste processing facility tokens and how many profitability tokens they will have on their boards (without exceeding the limit), but on each of the boards there has to be at least one waste processing facility token for it to be useable.
Note: The players have to buy the waste processing profitability tokens of one kind in sequence from x2 to x4. This means one cannot buy the x4 profitability token without having previously bought the x3 and x2 tokens. The profitability tokens don't stack, only the highest one counts.
Example – buying waste processing facility and profitability tokens: The player has a working paper processing facility – he already has one waste processing facility token on his board. Now he wants to expand its capacity, so he buys a second waste processing facility token for 5 ecodollars in order to be able to process two cards of this type at a time. Besides that he wants to multiply his incomes from waste processing, so he buys the x2 profitability token for 5 ecodollars.
3. Recycling and incineration phase
Recycling
The order of recycling depends on the sectors and rows, in which the players have their recycling plants. Recycling starts from sector I, then players recycle in sector II in the same manner, and finally in sector III. In each sector, the order of the players is based on their position in the sector. The player who has his plants in the upmost row goes first and the one in the lowest row goes last.
To recycle, a player draws random cards from the pile in the sector, in which he has got his plants. The number of the cards a player draws depends on the row he occupies in the sector and on the number of his plants in that row. There is information about the quantity of cards a player can draw above each of the spaces in three sectors on the game board. After drawing cards the player can look through them and keep any number of cards. He puts the remaining cards back on the pile. If he took any cards for himself, he places them directly on his waste processing facility boards (if it's possible), keeps them in hand (keeping in mind the 2 cards in hand limit) or puts them directly in the landfill. Then the player shuffles the pile and gives it to the player who has plants in the next row of that sector.
Note: The players mustn't swap cards from their hands with cards they have on the waste processing facility boards. If the player doesn't have space on his boards or in hand, he has to give the card back to the pile, otherwise it will have to be discarded to the landfill. In the recycling phase the player can decide not to keep any cards from the pile.
Recycling example for three players
The players have their recycling plants only in sector III. There are 12 cards in the pile. The red player owns 2 recycling plants in the 1st row, the green player owns 2 recycling plants in the 2nd row, and the blue player owns 1 recycling plant in the 3rd. The red player is the one who starts recycling. He draws 3 cards and keeps 2 of them (he directly places one in the adequate waste processing facility and takes the other one up in hand), he puts the remaining card back to the sector's pile, shuffles it and passes to the green player. He draws 3 cards and places 1 of them in the adequate waste processing facility. The remaining cards go back to the sector's pile. The blue player draws 2 cards from the shuffled pile and keeps 1 of them in hand. The remaining one goes back to the pile.
Incineration
The order of incineration is established analogously to the order of recycling. Before the incineration starts, the players discard all the aluminium and glass cards from sector III pile (they cannot be incinerated) to the discard pile. Each incineration plant is able to incinerate only and exactly 2 cards. Only cards from sector III can be incinerated. If only one card remains on the pile of sector III, the player gets no money. If there is no cards left in sector III, the incineration is skipped in this round. If nobody unlocked sectors I and II, each incineration plant earns 2 ecodollars. If sector II is unlocked, each incineration plant earns 3 ecodollars and if sector I is unlocked, each incineration plant earns 5 ecodollars. The incinerated cards are directly discarded to the discard pile.
Incineration example for four players
After recycling there are 9 cards left in pile in sector III. The players look through those cards and discard the waste that cannot be incinerated: in this case 2 glass cards are moved to the discard pile. Therefore, there are 7 cards left to be incinerated. The yellow, red, blue and green players own the incineration plants. Each of those plants incinerates exactly two cards. The income from incineration is 2 ecodollars because sectors I and II are still locked. The yellow, red and blue players earn 2 ecodollars each. For the green player there is only one card left to incinerate, so he doesn't receive any money.
4. Waste processing phase
In this phase the players collect their incomes from the waste processing. The players count the value of income from each of their waste processing facilities by adding the values of each card in the processing facility of one kind and then multiplying it by the value of the highest waste processing profitability token on that board. At the end, the incomes from all of the processing facilities are added up. The players collect their incomes from the bank and directly discard the processed cards to the discard pile.
Paper processing example
The player owns the paper processing facility, which can process two cards (there are two waste processing facility tokens on it) for tripled value (there is a x3 profitability token on it). During this round the player placed two paper cards on his board. Each of them is worth 2. In the processing phase the player receives 12 ecodollars because 2+2 (cards' value) = 4 multiplied by the value of the highest profitability token 4x3=12.
At the end of this phase the cards from sector III are discarded, from sector II are moved to sector III and the ones from sector I to sector II. Sector I remains empty until the next littering phase.
Note: The players can place their waste cards on their waste processing facility boards at any time during the course of the game, even during an opponent's turn.
End of the Game and Scoring
The game ends after the 10th round, in which the last golden waste card has been shuffled into sector I pile. Then the scoring begins. The players count their victory and negative points.
Victory points are awarded for:
- each full row of recycling plants (two plants), depending on the sector – 3 points for sector I, 2 points for sector II and 1 point for sector III;
- opened waste processing facilities, depending on their number – 10 points for all opened facilities, 6 points for 4 opened facilities and 3 points for 3 opened facilities;
- each incineration plant – 1 point;
- cash the player earned – 1 point for each 5 ecodollars;
- each toxic waste card – 1 point.
After summing up all the victory points the player needs to subtract from them the negative points for all of the waste cards which haven't been processed (cards remaining in the player's hand) and have been discarded to the landfill, depending on their type:
- -1 point for each garbage card;
- -2 points for each waste card (except golden waste);
- -3 points for each golden waste card.
Note: In the bottom right corner of the game board, you will find a table with all the necessary information for counting the points.
The player who collected the most points wins the game. In case of a tie, the players share the victory.
