Components
- 1 Rulebook
- 1 Moomin Valley map pad
- 10 Dice
- 6 Strawberry dice (Red)
- 4 Queen Jam dice (Purple)
- 6 Player pencils in 6 colours
Before You Start Playing
- Everyone chooses a coloured pencil and the character they want to be; the youngest chooses first. Colour in or around the character. If you play with the advanced rules, each character has a special ability. These are on page 3 (see "Special Abilities" below).
- If you like, write your name by the character you chose.
- Each player chooses a Pantry (score track) found along the edge of the map and colours in two strawberries there.
How to Play
The oldest player is the start player and begins; then turn order goes clockwise. At the start of their turn, the start player fills in a circle at the top of the sheet to mark which round it is. The game ends after six rounds; then you count Gifts and determine the winner.
Dice
There are two kinds of dice.
- Strawberry dice (Red): The player whose turn it is always rolls these.
- Queen Jam dice (Purple): You get them for a round by visiting characters others have already visited. Place them on the Moomin house at the start of the game, and put them back there when they are not in use.
1. Starting Roll
Roll all the dice you have (including any Queen Jam dice); this is called your Starting Roll.
2. Reroll (Strawberry Roll)
If you are not happy with your dice result, you can choose to cross out a strawberry to reroll any number of dice. Put a cross under a filled-in strawberry at your Pantry each time you choose to do this. You may make several Strawberry Rolls in the same turn as long as you have strawberries to cross out.
Example: A few rounds into a game you roll 444531 and choose to keep the fours. Since you have uncrossed strawberries you can reroll. You cross out a strawberry and choose to reroll the 5, the 3 and the 1. After the reroll you have 444235. You decide to try again by rerolling once more. You cross out another strawberry and choose to reroll the 3, the 2 and the 5. This time you get two 4s and a 5, which gives you 444445. You can visit the Fuddler (Klått-Djuret).
3. Visit
After each dice roll you may choose to visit a character to get Gifts or a Queen Jam die (explained below). To do so, the dice you have rolled must match the dice combination the character has by its portrait on the map.
- 3a. O, X and Δ each stand for a unique value of your choice. So all O are the same number, all X another and all Δ a third.
- 3b. A, B, C, D, E, F mean any value, as long as they are in sequence, where A is always the lowest.
- 3c. Die icons such as 1 or 6 mean it must be exactly the value shown.
Visit examples
- 3a: Primadonna's Horse has XXOOΔΔ; then you need to roll e.g. 115566.
- 3b: Mymble (the older) has ABCDCBA; then you need to roll e.g. 2345432, but not 6543456, because that would be DCBABCD.
- 3c: The Hattifatteners have 66XXX; then you need e.g. 66111 (but not 66123, as all X must be of the same value).
Visits Give Strawberries and Gifts or Dice
If your dice match a character's dice combination you may visit that character, and then the following happens:
- Get the strawberries shown on the frame under the portrait. Fill in that many strawberries in your Pantry.
- 2a. If the portrait's background is white: Get a Gift. You are the first visitor today. Therefore you get a Gift. The kind and number are shown in the frame under the portrait. Cross out the Gift in the frame and draw tally marks in your Pantry in the box that matches the Gift. Draw one mark if there is one Gift in the frame and two marks if there are two Gifts. Don't forget to fill in the portrait's background with your colour.
- 2b. If the portrait's background is filled in with a colour: Get a die. The character has already given away its Gift today. You therefore get no Gifts when you visit (but you did get the strawberries in step 1 above). Instead you may take a Queen Jam die from the Moomin house, if there is one there. You save this for your next turn.
Example 2a: You visit the Mymble, whom no one has visited yet. You fill in the background and two strawberries in your Pantry. Cross out her Gift and draw a mark in your Pantry's Wild Strawberries on a String box.
Example 2b: You visit Shadow (Sofus), who is already filled in. You get three strawberries and a Queen Jam die.
End of Your Turn
When you have visited someone your turn is over. If you rolled a Queen Jam die, it is put back on the Moomin house. If you got one this turn, you keep it until the end of your next turn.
End of the Game
When everyone has played 6 rounds the game is over. Whoever has the most Gifts in total has won! In a tie, the ranking of the Gifts in the Pantry decides, from left to right, where Cloudberry Jam is worth the most down to Gooseberry Compote worth the least. So if two players have the same number of gifts, the one who got the most Cloudberry Jam wins. If it is still a tie, the one of them with the most Wild Strawberries on a String wins, and so on.
The Pantry's Gifts, from most to least valuable:
- Cloudberry Jam (Hjortronsylt)
- Wild Strawberries on a String (Smultron på ett snöre)
- Sea Buckthorn Marmalade (Havtornsmarmelad)
- Plum Purée (Plommonpuré)
- Blackcurrant Juice (Svartvinbärssaft)
- Stirred Lingonberries (Rårörda lingon)
- Blueberry Soup (Blåbärssoppa)
- Gooseberry Compote (Krusbärskompott)
Slightly More Advanced Rules
If you like, you can add one or more of the following rules to the basic game's rules for a slightly more complex StegegetS Moomin.
Unlocking Characters
When you choose a character you may only choose among those that have a filled-in frame on the Special Abilities page. When you have determined the winner after a game, the winner may choose one of the characters someone visited during the game (filled in on that game's map) and "unlock" it by filling in its frame on the Special Abilities page. If you only visited already-unlocked characters, no new one may be unlocked.
Gift Roll
The Starting Roll is extended to: Roll all dice and then, if you want, reroll 1 die of your choice for each unique kind of Gift you have in your Pantry. The number of Gifts does not matter. The same die may not be rerolled several times during the Gift Roll. Make all Gift Rolls before you pay strawberries to reroll.
Character Abilities
Each character has a special ability, which you see under "Special Abilities" below. Follow these according to which character you have.
Varying Number of Rounds
The number of rounds depends on how many players you are. With this rule, the start player continues filling in circles on the next part of the round tracker after round six. See the table below for how many rounds you should play.
| Number of players | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rounds | 12 | 10 | 8 | 7 | 6 |
Special Abilities
The character you are has a special ability according to the table below. Don't forget your special ability and when the ability is triggered. The first 8 characters with a filled-in (green) frame are already unlocked the first time you play. Note that "get one more" of a Gift means one more Gift of the same kind, and only one extra regardless of whether the Gift you got was one or two.

Unlocked Characters
Which characters are unlocked depends on which rules you use and the pad used. In the basic game all characters are unlocked and can be chosen. In one of the advanced rules only Moomintroll, Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Snorkmaiden, Little My, Snufkin, Mymble and Sniff are unlocked. The other characters are unlocked, one at a time, each time you play. The winner then chooses one of the characters someone visited during the game and "unlocks it" by filling in the character's frame on the Special Abilities page of the rulebook. If all characters you visited are already unlocked, no new one is unlocked that game.
Designer Notes
Jon's name information box: I am often asked where the name StegegetS comes from. I wanted palindrome ladders in the game. One is, for example, the Mymble's mother with the combination ABCDCBA. A palindrome is a sequence of characters that, with spaces and punctuation excluded, remains unchanged if you read it backwards. StegegetS is the word Stege ("ladder"), made into a palindrome. That is where the game got its name.
Hanna's creativity box: If you like, you can use a graphite pencil to make the characters and things on the map look nicer. Use it for outlines and shading. And don't hesitate to use other creative materials you have to decorate Moomin Valley and the characters; glitter pens, stickers, confetti, glue, beads or whatever you think could look nice. Let your imagination flow!
