Can a hero voluntarily suffer strain beyond his Endurance?

No. A hero cannot choose to suffer strain (for movement points or for ability costs) that would take him over his Endurance. If an effect forces strain beyond Endurance he instead suffers 1 damage per point he cannot take. Strain over his new Endurance is discarded when he becomes wounded.
