1 mule, 40 sticks in 4 colors, 1 sugar cube, game instructions

Game Preparation

Place the mule in the middle of the table. Each player takes all sticks of one color. If there are fewer than four players, the extra sticks go back into the box. The sugar cube is not needed for the basic game.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has seen an actual mule before can start the game. Take one of the sticks and place it carefully on the mule's back.

Did the stick stay on the mule's back?

  • Yes. Then, well done!
  • No. Too bad. If one or more sticks fall off, then you have to place all of the sticks that fell into your pile no matter what color.

End of Game

The game is over when a player is able to place his last stick on the mule, thus winning the game.

Play Variations

  • For younger players: The game is easier if you play with fewer sticks (for example, with six sticks per child).
  • For fewer than four players: If you want, you can split the extra sticks among yourselves.
  • For particularly skilled and brave players: The game is more difficult if you put the sugar cube on the mule's back and stack the sticks on the cube. You can put it on the wide surface of the mule's back or if you want it especially wobbly then place it on the small surface.

Transcriber's note: the printed English flavour sentence ends "...onto the back of the mule without." — the sentence is truncated in the printed English (the German original reads "ohne dass etwas herunterfällt", i.e. "without anything falling down"). Transcribed as printed.
