Goal of the Game
Ages 5+, 1-4 players, 20 minutes.
You play as Spy Guy, a super-detective whose fame has reached even magical lands! At the request of the inhabitants of the town of Trefelick our hero sets out into a world full of magic and fairy-tale creatures to find the lair of the mighty dragon Balasar and recover the valuables taken from the townspeople. However, finding the dragon's treasure vault and carrying out its contents is the easier part of the plan. It will be much harder for Spy Guy to get safely back to town before the dragon notices and sets off in pursuit of the one who wronged him.
Your task is to find the dragon's cave before Balasar returns to it, take the treasure and return to town as quickly as possible. If you manage to escape the dragon chasing you, you win!
Game Components
- board
- 10 clue tokens
- hourglass
- 56 clue cards
- 3 pawns with stands
Game Setup
- Lay out the board on the table or floor so as to build the game track.
- Place Spy Guy's pawn on the first space of the track marked with Spy Guy's likeness (next to the town).
- Place the hourglass and the clue tokens next to the board.
- Place Balasar's pawn on the marked space on his track.
- Place the treasure on the marked space in front of Balasar's cave.
- Shuffle the clue cards and form them into a face-down deck (clue pictures facing down).
Instead of the hourglass you can use the timer from our app Spy Guy: Hidden Objects. You can download it for free from the AppStore or Google Play.
Clue Cards
To carry out your mission, together with Spy Guy you must find as many clues hidden throughout the land as possible. The more you find, the faster you will grab the treasure and escape the dragon. The items you must find are shown on the clue cards.
Parts of a card:
- The clue you are currently looking for.
- The clue number in Spy Guy's files. The last number is a hint for you: how many of these clues are on the whole board.
- The number of wings tells you how many spaces the dragon moves on his turn.
Remember: the item on the clue card always looks identical to the one on the board - it has the same colour and shape.
Gameplay
Spy Guy: Fantasy is a cooperative game in which you all control the detective's movements. The game consists of a series of alternating turns of Spy Guy and Balasar. Spy Guy starts the game.
Spy Guy's Turn
Reveal one card from the clue deck. It shows the item you must look for on the board this turn.
Immediately after revealing the card, turn over the hourglass.
Everyone looks out on the board for the sought item. It will appear in more than one place. If any of you manages to spot it, place a clue token on it.
When the sand in the hourglass runs out, the search ends! You may no longer place further tokens.
Count how many of the sought items you managed to find. Move Spy Guy's pawn forward by the same number of spaces. Spy Guy moves along the golden track, and at a crossroads he heads toward Balasar's cave according to the signpost.
On the way back he heads toward the town, still moving along the golden track.
If during his turn Spy Guy stops on the space with the treasure or passes through it, remove the treasure pawn from the board. Half of the mission is behind you - now you must escape back to Trefelick!
Finally, remove all clue tokens from the board.
Balasar's Turn
Balasar moves in different ways depending on whether the treasure pawn is still on the board:
- If the treasure is on the board, move the dragon one space toward it.
- If you have already taken the treasure off the board, look at the clue card revealed in Spy Guy's turn. Move the dragon pawn toward Spy Guy by as many spaces as there are wings at the bottom of the card.
The dragon is an exceptionally mighty and fast creature, and he can also fly! During his turn Balasar uses the shortcuts marked with yellow arrows.
End of the Game
If at any moment Balasar lands on the space with Spy Guy's pawn or overtakes him on the golden track, he has caught Spy Guy and you lose.
If, however, Spy Guy reaches the town (the last space of the board) before the dragon, he has managed to recover the treasures of the inhabitants of Trefelick and you win!
Clues
For convenience, the last page of the rulebook shows a table (pictorial) indicating how many times each clue appears on the board. Good luck in your search!
