Contract Cards
Each of the two scenarios uses its own set of Contract cards. These replace the Contract cards of the base game. The cards for the Jungfraubahn scenario carry the Jungfraubahn symbol (a red Swiss-cross icon), and those for Mount Washington carry the Mount Washington symbol (a blue star). Both sets are numbered from 1 to 30.
Notes on the Cards
- Contract cards 1, 2, 3 and 29: points are scored only for building sites that have no shovels printed on them.
- Contract card 3: this card has no effect if the next space is one of the Jungfraubahn track cards. Otherwise it applies to the next track card or the next building site that still has at least 1 rubble cube on it.
- Contract cards 23 and 25: points are scored if you have collected enough Jungfraubahn track cards.
- Contract card 27: 3 points per dynamite in your supply.
- Contract card 28: 3 points per ownership marker of yours on a building site that requires steel.
- Station cards 1a and 1b (Kleine Scheidegg and Hotel Bellevue des Alpes) belong together. For the Surveyor they count as one station: the Surveyor starts in the hotel and its first step goes straight to Eigergletscher (Station 2).
Jungfraubahn Scenario
This is a scenario for 1-4 advanced players. Yellow is not available as a player colour, because the yellow cubes are used as dynamite. The base rules (Mt. Snowdon) apply with the following changes:
- Snow instead of fog.
- Dynamite as a new resource.
- Dynamite as an option during excavation.
- Negative points for the Surveyor in the valley.
With 5 players, 16 cubes of another colour are needed as dynamite, because yellow then serves as a player colour.
Setup
Use all cards with the Jungfraubahn symbol. Set up as in the base game with these changes:
- Place station card 1b (Hotel Bellevue des Alpes) on Llanberis and station card 1a (Kleine Scheidegg) to its left, as the first card of the route.
- Lay out the five other Jungfraubahn station cards around the board in ascending order. Turn the Jungfraubahn track cards so that the dynamite side faces up, and shuffle them. Place one between each pair of station cards without looking at it.
- Each player places their Surveyor in the Hotel Bellevue des Alpes. The Surveyor bonus is negative until the Jungfraujoch has been reached.
- Place rubble at the start only on the station cards. The normal track cards and their rubble come into play during the game, once the special Jungfraubahn track cards have been removed.
- Place the Jungfraubahn cover card for Works [C] on the board, with the side for the number of players facing up.
- Use only the 30 Contract cards with the Jungfraubahn symbol.
- Place the new weather track card on the board. Snow replaces fog.
- Take the two additional grey discs from the supply and place them on spaces 4 and 8 of the event track. In this scenario snow can also occur as an event. In return, stations are not completed by events.
- Remove the Train "No.1 L.A.D.A.S" from the game; it is not used in this scenario. Shuffle the "Foundry Loco" in with the other six base-game Trains, draw five of them, and add the new "Snowplough" Train, so that six Trains are in the Engine Shed.
- Place coal or dynamite on the Trains as shown.
- In this scenario the Excavate action [B] is not replaced by the Build action [B] on the back of the set-aside Train, because snow can keep bringing new rubble into play.
- Place the 16 yellow cubes as dynamite in the general supply.
Dynamite
Dynamite is obtained through the Works action [C]. Dynamite can be used as part of an Excavate action. The face-down Jungfraubahn track cards can be revealed by using dynamite. As a result, the player lays the stated number of normal track cards, places rubble on them, and keeps the Jungfraubahn track card. That card scores points at the end of the game.
Excavation
Clearing stations works as in the base game: the building sites in a station must be cleared from left to right, first the top row and then, sometimes, the second row.
Dynamite gives the player additional options during the Excavate action. Using dynamite costs 1 point of work rate each time.
Example: the work rate is 4 and the player has 2 dynamite and a Contract card that doubles the rubble cleared (card 26 or 30). The player could use both dynamite and clear 4 rubble cubes in total.
WARNING: the excavation could be wasted if you do not have dynamite with you at the right moment.
Dynamite can be used in these ways:
a) For one dynamite, you can remove all the rubble from one track card or from the current building site of a station. This dynamite goes back to the general supply. The player places only one ownership marker on the cleared spot.
b) If the next space is a face-down Jungfraubahn track card and the player has no dynamite, the excavation stops here. If the player has dynamite, they must return one dynamite to the general supply to turn the card over. The revealed card shows between 1 and 3 normal track cards. Shuffle the normal track cards and replace the Jungfraubahn track card with the corresponding number of track cards. Place rubble on the track cards as appropriate. The player keeps the Jungfraubahn track card; at the end of the game it is worth the printed number of victory points.
Example (see the figure on page 7 of the German booklet; the figure is not reproduced here)
The work rate is 4 and the player has no relevant Contract cards.
- 1 (of 4): remove the first rubble from the building site at the Jungfraujoch.
- 2 (of 4): remove the second rubble there and place an ownership marker on the building site for it.
- 3 (of 4): you now need one dynamite to turn over the Jungfraubahn track card. If you do not have one, your excavation ends at this point. Once you have handed in the dynamite, turn the card over. This one shows two normal track cards. Shuffle the track cards and place two of them in the spot of the blown-up card. Fill the cards with rubble from the general supply as shown next to the shovel. Take the Jungfraubahn track card; it is worth 7 points at the end of the game.
- 4 (of 4): remove the first rubble from the first track card laid out.
Works
As a third option, in addition to the base game, players may take 1 stick of dynamite (1 yellow cube) from the general supply. This counts as one conversion.
Snow
Unlike the base game, there is snow instead of fog. Snow is also triggered when a snow event happens (on one of the two grey discs on the event track).
When it snows, rubble is placed again on fields that have already been cleared, as follows:
- Find the highest-lying field that has been cleared wholly or partly. This can be a field of a station without an ownership marker, or a track card (whether or not it has an ownership marker).
- Starting from this field and then moving downhill (in stations from bottom to top, right to left), it snows on as many fields as the current work rate indicates. Every field that has an ownership marker on it is counted, but receives no rubble.
- On each field where it snows, place as much rubble as is printed there. A field printed with [3] that holds 1 rubble would therefore receive 3 additional rubble cubes.
- If a route that was already cleared to a station is snowed over again, building at that station can only continue once the route has been cleared again.
Events
Outside firms clear rubble. This works as in the base game, except for Jungfraubahn track cards. If the next space is such a card, one point of work rate is used to turn it over. Bring the corresponding number of normal track cards into play and clear as many of them as the remaining work rate allows. The Jungfraubahn track card is removed from the game entirely.
Outside firms lay track. This works as in the base game, except when the next track card is a Jungfraubahn track card. Remove it from the game, replace it with the corresponding number of track cards, and turn over as many of these cards to their track side as the work rate indicates. Fill the remaining new track cards with rubble.
Outside firms complete a station. In this scenario this event is replaced by the snowfall event.
Snowfall. When an event covered by a grey disc is resolved, carry out snow according to the rules above.
Mount Washington Scenario
This is a scenario for 1-5 advanced players. Yellow is not available as a player colour, because the yellow cubes are used as dynamite. The base rules (Mt. Snowdon) apply with the following changes:
- Snow instead of fog.
- Dynamite as an option in excavation.
- The Surveyors do not move. Instead they start at the summit and slide down at the end of the game.
Setup
Use all cards with the Mount Washington symbol. Set up as in the base game with these changes:
- Place station 1 (Marshfield Station) on Llanberis and lay out the other Mount Washington station cards around the board in ascending order, with the corresponding number of track cards between them. With 3-5 players, the two Jacob's Ladder stations lie next to each other with no track cards between them. With 1-2 players, card 4b is not used.
- Place the Devil's Shingle card directly behind the summit card and put the players' Surveyors on it.
- Remove the Trains "No.1 L.A.D.A.S" and "Snowplough" from the game; they are not used in this scenario. Shuffle the "Foundry Loco" in with the other six base-game Trains, draw five of them, and add the new "Old Peppersass" Train, so that six Trains are in the Engine Shed. Place coal on the Trains as shown.
- In this scenario the Excavate action [B] is not replaced by the Build action [B] on the back of the set-aside Train, because snow can keep bringing new rubble into play.
- Place the new weather track card on the board, with the Mount Washington side showing. Snow replaces fog.
- With 2-5 players, place the cover card over events 8-10 of the event track. Take the two additional grey discs from the supply and place them on spaces 4 and 8 of the event track. In this scenario snow can also occur as an event. In return, stations are not completed by events here. Event 9 now has no effect.
- Because outside firms then lay no track at the end of the game, the game usually ends when a player lays the last track.
- Use only the 30 Contract cards with the Mount Washington symbol.
- Place the "Clear with Dynamite" cover card for action [G] (Surveyor) on the board, with the side for the number of players facing up.
Every station on which ownership markers lie is counted, but receives no rubble. Track cards with ownership markers are snowed over again in this scenario.
- On each field where it snows, place 2 additional rubble cubes, even above the printed starting value.
- If a route that was already cleared to a station is snowed over again, building at that station can only continue once the route has been cleared again.
The Devil's Shingles
These home-made sledges let the workers get back down to the valley as quickly as possible with their tools.
At the end of the game, before scoring, the Surveyors slide back down towards the valley. Each player moves their Surveyor station by station downwards, and stops only at a station where they have no ownership marker. There the Surveyor stays and scores the victory points printed on that station.
Action [G]: "Clear with Dynamite"
When this new action is resolved, the players use the current work rate for clearing.
- The first point of the work rate is used to blast the next available field that has rubble on it. In this scenario dynamite is not a resource; it is used automatically in action [G]. All rubble on this field is removed from the game. If the field is in a station, the player must place an ownership marker on the field if possible.
- The remaining points of the work rate are used for clearing rubble as normal.
New Locomotives
Each of the new Trains brings the same kind of bonus: the owner may pay 1 coal at the start of a round to have an additional worker for that round. The Trains are listed here as they appear in the German booklet.
Snowplough
Comes with 1 dynamite (and no coal). At the start of a round the owner may give up 1 coal to have an additional worker in that round. Whenever the owner carries out the Excavate action, the worker clears 1 rubble more than the current work rate indicates, even above the maximum shown on the track.
In a scenario without dynamite this Train is not very effective.
Foundry Loco
Comes with 1 coal. At the start of a round the owner may give up 1 coal to have an additional worker in that round. Whenever the owner carries out the Works action, they may make up to 5 conversions instead of the usual 3. Which conversions are possible depends on the scenario.
Old Peppersass
Comes with 1 coal. At the start of a round the owner may give up 1 coal to have an additional worker in that round. Whenever the owner carries out the Build action [E], the cost of a building site that requires stone is reduced by 1 stone. This bonus can be combined with bonuses from Contract cards, and can in theory reduce the cost to 0.
Prototype Engine
Comes with 1 coal. At the start of a round the owner may give up 1 coal to have an additional worker in that round. The Train can be acquired for free and is worth 3 points at the end of the game.
Game End
As in the base game, the game ends when track has been laid on all track cards. If a player lays the last track, the round is finished. If a track is laid by an event, all players get one more turn.
