Setup
Prepare the components according to the number of players (see "Story Card Count" and "Character Card Use" below).
Abbreviations used in this rulebook: character card = character; story card = card or hand; apple tile = apple.
- Gather the story cards into one stack, face down. This is the draw pile.
- Without looking at it, take 1 card from the draw pile and set it face down beside the draw pile.
- Deal 1 apple tile face down to each player.
- Deal 1 character card face down to each player.
- Deal 1 card from the draw pile face down to each player. This is the player's hand.
- Each player checks their own apple tile, character card and hand. Other players must not see them. When finished, turn them face down again.
- Hands and characters may be checked at any time after the game has started.
- Apple tiles may not be checked until instructed to do so.
- The player who most recently ate an apple becomes the start player.
For a 4-player game, see "4-Player Game" below, which adds an NPC before the character cards are dealt.
Opening Phase
If any character acting in the opening phase is in play, the start player reads the following aloud. If no character acts in the opening phase, skip the opening phase.
-
If Green is in play:
"Everyone close your eyes and hold your right hand out in front of you. Snow White, extend your thumb. Green, open your eyes and check Snow White. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Green, close your eyes."
-
If Black is in play:
"Everyone close your eyes and hold your right hand out in front of you. Any player holding the poisoned apple, extend your thumb. Black, open your eyes and check the location of the poisoned apple. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Black, close your eyes."
After reading the text, everyone opens their eyes and the game proceeds to the Story Phase.
Story Phase
First, check the draw pile. If there is no draw pile, go to the Last-Turn Phase. If there is one, the current player performs one of the following actions (1 to 5), then the turn passes to the next player.
- Story progress
- Draw 1 card from the top of the draw pile, so that your hand has 2 cards. (If there is no draw pile, skip the draw and continue with the rest of the action.)
- If you use a hand card, read the card's title aloud and turn it face up. The used card is discarded face up beside the draw pile. (Even if the designated player does not hold the card, its effect can still be used as if they did.)
- If you do not use a hand card, choose 1 card and discard it face up beside the draw pile.
- Hand exchange: Exchange your hand with the hand of the designated player. (A player with no hand simply receives the card.)
- Apple exchange: Exchange your apple tile with the apple tile of the designated player.
- Check your own apple: Look at your own apple tile, then turn it face down again.
- Use a character ability: A character who has an ability usable on their turn may use it.
Last-Turn Phase
Take turns in the same way as in the Story Phase. When every player has taken a turn in the Last-Turn Phase, proceed to the Ending Phase.
Ending Phase
- First, only the player with the Queen character turns their apple tile face up. If it is the poisoned apple, that player designates a player and hands that player the poisoned apple.
- Next, the remaining players turn their character cards face up.
- Finally, with the call "Itadakimasu!" ("Let's eat!"), all players eat their apples. Turn your apple tile and your hand face up.
- Alas, a character who ate the poisoned apple dies.
Victory
The player faction whose victory condition has been met wins.
- Snow White faction: wins if Snow White survives.
- Queen faction: wins if Snow White is killed.
- Other faction (Rose): wins alone if Snow White survives and Rose also survives.
- If Rose is in play, the Snow White faction loses if Rose is still alive, even if Snow White survives.
Story Card Count
Remove story cards according to the number of players.
Labels used in this table, as printed in the rulebook: "Do you like apples?" = apple-lover; "Do you like mushrooms?" = mushroom-lover.
| Players | Story cards |
|---|---|
| 7-8 | Use all story cards. |
| 6 | Remove 2 apple-lover cards and 2 mushroom-lover cards. |
| 5 | Remove 2 apple-lover cards, 2 mushroom-lover cards, and the card "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" (鏡よ鏡よ鏡さん). |
| 4 | Remove 4 apple-lover cards, 3 mushroom-lover cards, and the card "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" (鏡よ鏡よ鏡さん). |
Character Card Use
Snow White and the Queen must always be included.
The table below shows how many character cards of each faction to use, and how many poisoned apples to use, for each player count.
| Players | Character cards | Poisoned apples |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | Snow White faction 4, Queen faction 3, Rose 1 | 4 |
| 7 | Either: Snow White faction 4, Queen faction 2, Rose 1; or: Snow White faction 3, Queen faction 3, Rose 1 | 3 |
| 6 | Snow White faction 3, Queen faction 2, Rose 1 | 3 |
| 4-5 | Either: Snow White faction 2, Queen faction 2, Rose 1; or: Snow White faction 3, Queen faction 2 | 2 |
4-Player Game
Before dealing character cards to the players, take 1 card, place it face down to the right of the start player, and use it as an NPC.
- At this time, remove the Queen card from the cards to be used, and choose the NPC's character from the cards.
- Deal the NPC a character card, an apple tile and a hand, the same as the players.
- The NPC takes part in the game as a player without turns. Questions cannot be asked of this player.
- Only if the NPC is Snow White does the game continue when Snow White is killed.
Card Notes
Character Cards
- Faction symbol: a snowflake/ice crystal means Snow White faction. A spider's web means Queen faction. Any other symbol means the other faction (Rose).
- Favourite food: apple, mushroom, or × (neither).
- Character name.
- Victory condition: the faction wins when its victory condition is met.
- Character ability: see each character card for details.
Example (the Queen card): Victory condition: "Killed Snow White." Ability: "If you hold the poisoned apple that is revealed first in the Ending Phase, you may name a player and make them eat it."
Story Cards
- Card name: read it aloud when the card is used.
- Weapon: if the card is a weapon, its icon is shown.
- Effect: the effect when the card is used.
- If a character is killed by a card's effect: if the killed character is Snow White, the Queen faction wins; turn all players' cards face up. Otherwise the game continues. That player is eliminated from the game. Announce only that the killed character was not Snow White, and remove all of that player's cards from the game.
Example: the card "Poisoned Comb" (毒の櫛). Its effect: "Usable on the last turn. Kill the designated player."

Questions and Answers
Q. Can a card be discarded face down? A. No. Cards are discarded face up.
Q. What happens to story progress and hand exchange when there is no draw pile? A. Without a draw pile, story progress only uses your hand, and a hand exchange simply means giving your hand to the other player.

Q. If Snow White is killed and the Queen also dies, who wins? A. Snow White was killed, so the Queen faction wins.
Q. At the end of the game the NPC held the cursed ring. Is the NPC killed? A. Yes, the NPC is killed.
Q. If you do not want to use a card, can you still discard it? A. Yes. You may discard it. You draw the card first, and then choose whether to use it.
Q. If the player with the Prince (王子様) eats 2 poisoned apples, do they come back to life? A. Yes, they come back to life. However, deaths other than from poisoned apples cannot be prevented.
Q. Can a hand or apple be exchanged with an eliminated player? A. No. Eliminated players are removed from the game.
Q. Can "I'll Throw It Away for You" (捨てといてあげる) be used on a player who has no cards? A. Yes. In that case the other player simply receives the card.
