They are not dead — just too hurt to act. At 0 health they cannot attack, join challenges, or use crew board abilities, ability cards or XP/level-card abilities until healed to at least 1. They can still finish the combat action in which they dropped, keep their synergy token usable, be healed, hold or pass weapons, be equipped with cards and have fatigue and statuses removed.
