The first token of an attack can go on any open square; every later token from that same attack must touch (edge to edge) a token from that attack, in any connected shape, and may not be put on or skipped over a square that already holds damage. Hearts needing more than 1 are all-or-nothing, you must place all the damage you deal where space exists, and excess that cannot be placed is wasted. Captain-style synergy lets some damage go diagonally.
