About Components
1. Personal Characters. At the beginning of the game each player picks one character card. Every card has different skills which can be used for extra actions.
- Queen Seondeok: Build a pagoda on your turn and gain 2 extra points.
- Mishil: Exchange 3 resources (excluding gold) for 1 gold.
- Kim Chunchu: Place 1 additional terrain tile when building a pavilion on your turn and gain extra points.
- Munhui: Choose 2 construction cards if 2 or more of the open construction cards involve trees. One card must include a tree, and you must pay all the resources for the chosen construction cards.
- Kim Yisin: Discard 2 construction cards using 2 resources and open 2 new cards from the deck. Discarded cards go to the bottom of the deck.
2. Construction Cards. Each card shows the icon of the building, which must match the icon on the terrain tile to build. Points are awarded after construction. Resources are required for construction.
3. Status Cards. The order for the next round is determined by the number at the top of the Status card. The player with the lowest number goes first. Choose a Status card on your turn and receive the resource chips shown at the bottom.
4. Terrain Tiles. Terrain tiles are randomly assigned to 4 types: pond, roof tile, forest, and land. Place the tiles on the board so that they connect with the same terrain, scoring points for connections. Areas to place building models are marked on the tiles. Scoring for connections is 2 points for connecting two of the same terrain, 2 extra points for completing a terrain, and 1 point for connecting two land tiles.
The rules use both "land" and "yard" for the same terrain type; the artwork labels it 마당 (yard). Both words are kept as printed.
Set Up
- Board. Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Character Selection. Shuffle the character cards face down. Each player picks one card. Place it in front of you and take the corresponding color game piece and score markers.
- Terrain Tiles. Shuffle the terrain tiles (except the Starting Tile, step 6) and divide them into four stacks. Place them face up on the game board. (The printed text shows the step-6 marker where the number of excluded cards would appear; it is read here as the Starting Tile.) The number of stacks and tiles per stack depends on the number of players:
| Players | Terrain Tiles | Status Cards |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players | 2 piles of 12 each | Open 3 cards |
| 3 players | 3 piles of 12 each | Open 4 cards |
| 4 players | 4 piles of 12 each | Open 5 cards |
- Status Cards. Shuffle the Status cards. Place them face down on the game board and flip the top 5 cards face up. (The printed text says "top 5"; the player-count table above gives the number of cards to open for each player count.) Placement order is shown on the board, from left to right: 1, 8, 4, 10, 9, then the card back.
- Resource Chips. Separate the resource chips by type and place them next to the game board.
- Starting Tile. Place the Starting Tile face up in the center of the board. This tile is yellow on the back and includes all four terrains. This tile cannot be used for placing buildings.
- Construction Cards. Shuffle the construction cards and place them face down in a deck on the game board. Flip the top 4 cards face up.
- Building Models. Separate the building models by type and place them next to the game.
Playing The Game
Each player picks one status card at a time. Flip the cards and the player who chooses the lowest status card starts the game.
In a new round, the player who picked the lowest status card in the previous round takes the first turn.
On your turn, follow these steps in order, then pass the turn to the next player:
- Choose a Status card and take the shown resource chips.
- Place a terrain tile and score points.
- Build building models and score points.
The turn diagram also shows "(+) use character skill" as an optional addition to the steps above.
Once everyone has taken a turn, the round ends and preparation for the next round begins.
Turn Instructions
1. Choosing a Status Card
On your turn, first choose a status card. Each status card shows the types of resources you can take and determines the turn order for the next round. Higher-ranking cards can take better resources but will have a later turn in the next round.
For example, if you choose card number 9 while others choose cards numbered 1, 4, and 10, you will go third in the next round.
The resources available for this round are indicated on the card. The open status cards are shown as "Open Card" in the rules' diagram.
After choosing a status card, take the resources displayed on the bottom of the card from the storage. If the storage is short on resources or empty, take as many as are available. Organize your resources in front of you by type.
Example from the rules: a card showing Rock x 1, Iron x 1, Gold x 1.
2. Placing Terrain Tiles
Terrain tiles are randomly assigned to 4 types: pond, roof tile, forest, and yard (land).
Choose a terrain tile and connect it with one of the already placed tiles on the game board. Expand the terrain and earn points.
The tile must connect to the existing terrain on the game board. You can rotate the tile so that it lines up with the terrain, but you cannot place it if it doesn't connect to the terrain.
The rules' diagram shows a Start Tile with land, forest, pond and roof sides, and a new tile connected to it.
Scoring
Points are earned based on how you place the tile:
- Connect 2 sides of the tile with the same terrain and earn 2 points (for example, forests: 2 points).
- Complete the terrain and earn an additional 2 points.
- 1 point if 2 sides are connected to the yard (land).
Example from the rules, "Points Earned When Placing a Tile": 1) Connected terrain: Forest: 2 points, Building: 2 points. 2) Completed terrain: additional 2 points. Score in the example: 8 points.
3. Constructing
Terrain tiles are randomly assigned to 4 types: pond, roof tile, forest, and yard.
Use resources to purchase a construction card, place a building on the terrain tile and earn points.
Purchasing a Construction Card
Before placing a building, you must first purchase a construction card. To buy a construction card, there must be an available terrain tile where the building can be placed.
- Pay the resources shown at the bottom of the construction card.
- The icon on the terrain tile must match the icon at the top of the construction card.
Only one building can be placed on the tile with the matching icon. If you don't have the required resources or if there is no available tile with the correct icon, you cannot place a building.
Placing a Building Model
Take the building model shown on the construction card and place it on the matching terrain tile.
Scoring
The points are shown in the top-right corner of the construction card. Move your score marker according to the points.
Placing a Royal Palace
Unlike other building models, a palace can only be placed when the following conditions are met:
- You have the resources shown on the construction card.
- You have connected 3 or more building terrain tiles.
- There is a palace icon on the terrain tile.
If all three conditions are satisfied, you can place a Royal Palace and immediately earn 17 points.
Refilling Construction Cards
If a construction card is purchased, immediately replace it with a new card from the deck, so there are always 4 construction cards available.
End of Round
Once all players have completed their turns, the round ends and preparations for the next round begin.
Moving Game Pieces. Move your game piece to the field matching the number of your rank card. The player with the lowest rank card starts the next round. (Order: Misil > Kim Chunchu > Seondeok > Kim Yousin)
Refilling Status Cards. Move the remaining cards to the leftmost field and open new status cards to fill the empty fields. Return the used status cards to the bottom of the deck.
Game End
The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins. The game ends after the round in which one of the following conditions is met:
- A. Three types of building models have been exhausted.
- B. A terrain tile stack has been exhausted.
