Components

  • 30 Investigation tiles: on the Suspect side, the five suspects each appear once with each of the six witnesses at top right. On the Witness side, only the six witnesses appear, five times each.
  • One Escape booklet representing Moriarty's escape.
  • 5 Mission tiles, one for each of the five suspects.

Cooperative Rules

Setup

The 30 Investigation tiles are shuffled and laid Witness side up in a rectangle of six tiles by five tiles called the Board. The Escape booklet is placed beside the Board. The five Mission tiles are not used and are put back in the box. The first player is chosen by any desired method.

Turn

Players play one after another, clockwise.

On their turn, the active player turns over two tiles of the Board and reveals their Suspect side. If both tiles show the same suspect, the active player reveals a third tile of the Board. If this last one again shows the same suspect, the three tiles are removed from the Board and placed Suspect side up beside the Board. The investigation progresses, clues accumulate. Some witnesses have already cleared suspects and the net around the accomplice is tightening...

In all other cases, the active player puts back, Witness side up, the tiles of the Board that they revealed, and turns one page of the Escape booklet. Moriarty continues his flight, but some suspects have left traces...

End of the Game

If the active player turns the last page of the Escape booklet, Moriarty escapes for good and all players have lost the game.

If only three tiles remain on the Board, necessarily showing the same suspect, the players have found Moriarty's accomplice and manage to arrest him!

Competitive Rules

Setup

The 30 Investigation tiles are shuffled and laid Witness side up in a rectangle of six tiles by five tiles called the Board. If one of the variants is used, each player receives a Mission tile, which they keep secret. Otherwise, the Mission tiles are put back in the box, as is the Escape booklet, which is not used. The first player is chosen by any desired method.

Turn

Players play one after another, clockwise.

On their turn, the active player turns over two tiles of the Board and reveals their Suspect side. If they show the same suspect, each of the other players, starting with the player to the right of the active player and in counterclockwise order, points a finger at a tile of the Board. The active player then reveals a third tile of the Board, of their choice. If this last one again shows the same suspect, the active player takes the first two Suspect tiles turned over. The third Suspect tile turned over goes either to the active player if nobody had pointed at it, or to the player who pointed at it. The tiles are placed Suspect side up, visible to all players.

In all other cases, the active player puts back, Witness side up, the tiles of the Board that they revealed.

End of the Game

The game ends when only three tiles remain on the Board, necessarily showing the same suspect, who is Moriarty's accomplice. Each Suspect tile won earns its owner 1 point.

Intuition variant: The player whose Mission tile shows the accomplice earns 3 additional points.

Wrongly Accused variant: The players whose Mission tile does not show the accomplice earn 2 additional points.

The winner is the detective with the most points.
