The Object of Shake 'n Take

The first player to capture all of the aliens on his or her game board wins Shake 'n Take!

2–5 Players

Setting Up

  1. Arrange the players around a table so that each player is within arm's reach of his or her neighbors.
  2. Remove from the box: one Shaker Egg, one Shape Die, one marker, both erasers, and one game board for each player. The remaining components are only used for groups of 6–10 players.
  3. Give each player a game board. Younger players may use the side with geometric shapes while all other players use the alien side.
  4. Choose one player to be the first Alien Hunter and give that player the marker and the Shape Die.
  5. Give the Shaker Egg to the person sitting directly to the right of the Alien Hunter.

Playing the Game

  1. The Alien Hunter rolls the Shape Die and then quickly captures aliens that have the shape which was rolled. The Alien Hunter may reroll the Shape Die at any time, but may only capture aliens with the shape that was most recently rolled. See Capturing Aliens.
  2. As soon as the Alien Hunter has rolled the Shape Die, the player to his or her right may begin shaking the Shaker Egg. When the alien face appears on the top surface of the die within the Shaker Egg, the player who was shaking the egg immediately takes the marker from the Alien Hunter's hand. See Shaking and Taking.
  3. After a player takes the marker from an Alien Hunter, that player becomes the next Alien Hunter and picks up the Shape Die. The player to his or her right grabs the Shaker Egg.
  4. Repeat steps 1–3 until one player has captured all of the aliens on his or her game board.

6–10 Players

The 6–10 player game is played just like the 2–5 player game, except that there are two Alien Hunters. The Alien Hunters are working simultaneously but are independent of one another.

Setting Up

  1. Arrange the players around a table so that each player is within arm's reach of his or her neighbors.
  2. Remove from the box: both Shaker Eggs, both Shape Dice, both markers, both erasers, and one game board for each player.
  3. Give each player a game board. Younger players may use the side with geometric shapes while all other players use the alien side.
  4. Choose two players who are sitting at opposite sides of the table to be the first Alien Hunters. Give each Alien Hunter a marker and a Shape Die.
  5. Give a Shaker Egg to each player sitting directly to the right of an Alien Hunter.

Playing the Game

  1. Simultaneously, each Alien Hunter rolls his or her Shape Die and then quickly captures aliens that have the shape which was rolled on his or her die. Either Alien Hunter may reroll his or her Shape Die at any time, but may only capture aliens with the shape that was most recently rolled on his or her die. See Capturing Aliens.
  2. As soon as an Alien Hunter has rolled his or her Shape Die, the player to his or her right may begin shaking the Shaker Egg. When the alien face appears on the top surface of the die within the Shaker Egg, the player who was shaking the egg immediately takes the marker from the Alien Hunter's hand. See Shaking and Taking.

In a 6–10 player game, it is possible that one Alien Hunter is in the position to shake the egg for the other Alien Hunter and capture aliens at the same time. That player may choose to continue capturing aliens, to shake the Shaker Egg, or to do both at the same time!

  1. After a player takes the marker from an Alien Hunter, that player becomes the next Alien Hunter and picks up the Shape Die. The player to his or her right grabs the Shaker Egg.
  2. Repeat steps 1–3 until one player has captured all of the aliens on his or her game board.

Winning the Game

The first player to capture all of the aliens on his or her game board wins Shake 'n Take!

Note: The winning player should declare victory with an appropriate word or phrase. For example: I Win! Victory! Nanu-Nanu! I Came, I Saw, I Captured! I Shook and Took!

Capturing Aliens

To capture an alien, the Alien Hunter must draw a circle around that alien. The circle must enclose most of the alien and may not contain part or parts of other aliens. Although the circle does not need to be perfect, it must be clear that the alien is circled—a dot, dash, or X is not sufficient.

The Shape Die has six sides—five with shapes and one with a question mark. Each alien has one of the five basic shapes: square, circle, star, heart, and triangle (the five shapes are shown in purple on the rules sheet).

If the question mark is rolled, the Alien Hunter must select one of the five shapes and flip the Shape Die so that the selected side is up. The Alien Hunter may then start circling aliens which have that shape.

Shaking and Taking

Shaking—The player to the right of the Alien Hunter may only begin shaking the Shaker Egg after the Alien Hunter has rolled the Shape Die. The egg must be shaken so that the die comes completely out of the well and then settles back down into the well.

Taking—As soon as the alien face appears on the top surface of the die inside the Shaker Egg, the player with the Shaker Egg may immediately take the marker from the Alien Hunter's hand. He or she does not need to wait for the Alien Hunter to finish circling. The Alien Hunter must release the marker immediately.

Notes

  • The removable Alien Tops are designed to fit most brand name dry erase markers. If the dry erase markers included in the game run out of ink, purchase dry erase markers with a similar diameter and press the Alien Tops onto the new markers.
  • The game boards should be completely erased before being stored. If the dry erase ink remains on the board for a long period of time, the surface will need to be cleaned using soap and water or a mild cleaning solution. Use a rag or paper towel to wipe the board clean. Game boards may be damaged if submerged in water.
