Goal
Earn enough Point Tokens to win!
Playing with only 2 players? Read these rules, then see "2-Player Changes" at the end.
Setup
- Shuffle the cards and deal 5 face down to each player. You can look at your cards but keep them secret.
- Place the rest of the cards face down in the middle of the table. This is the Draw Pile. Leave some room next to the Draw Pile for the Discard Pile.
- Put the Point Tokens in the middle of the table.
- Give each player a Playmat. Each player should set theirs up and put it in front of them (see instructions on the back of each Playmat).
- Leave room in front of each player for their Collection.
- Pick a player to go first and put the Buyer Squatch on the table in front of them.
The Cards
First, let's talk about the cards.
When you have the Buyer Squatch you are the Buyer.
Creatures
You want these.
- Any 4 Tiny Creatures
- Any 3 Medium Creatures
- Any 2 Big Creatures
- Just 1 Giant Creature
Collecting a set earns a Point Token!
Community Creations: cards with this icon were suggested by our community!
Nasties
You don't want these.
- 2 of these: Poison Pill Bug
- 2 of these: Loan Shark
- 3 of these: Trojan Horse
Collecting a set makes bad things happen!
Thingamabobs
These have special powers that help you collect Creatures and avoid Nasties. No sets are required. Just read the text on a Thingamabob to learn what it does.
- Platonic Isolator (can only be played from your Collection): STEAL 1 point token from any player with more Point Tokens than you. Useful when you want more points!
- Detrital Repositioner: Remove 1 card from 1 deal, and put it in the Discard Pile. Useful when you want to make another player's deal worse.
- Cryptozooptic Expander (can only be played from your Collection; name partly illegible in the printed text): When all deals are ready, you get to turn over 1 additional card from ONE player's deal (this gives you a little more info).
- Thingamabob (name not legible in the printed text): Add 1 card from your hand (face down) to any deal. Useful for improving your deal or ruining someone else's.
Starting Your Turn
At the start of your turn, all other players will offer you a deal by each picking 3 cards from their hands and putting them face down in front of their Playmats.
Then, they all must flip 1 of their 3 cards face up.
When all deals are ready, you get to turn over 1 additional card from ONE player's deal (this gives you a little more info).
After you flip that additional card, say, "Does anyone want to play any Thingamabobs?"
Any player (including you) can now play as many Thingamabobs as they want. You can only play Thingamabobs FROM YOUR COLLECTION.
You won't have any cards in your Collection at the start of the game, so just skip to CHOOSING A DEAL!
Choosing a Deal
Now you must choose one of the deals, but you can only choose one.
When you're ready you must say, "I'm ready to choose a deal. Last chance to play Thingamabobs."
After Thingamabobs are played (or not), take ALL the cards in the deal you chose. Flip them face up INTO YOUR COLLECTION, then give the Buyer Squatch to the player whose deal you chose.
All other players must take the cards in their deals and flip them face up INTO THEIR OWN COLLECTIONS.
This means that if you put a bunch of Nasties in your deal, you'll have to keep them all (which is really bad!).
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
- Cards from hands CAN ONLY go into deals.
- Cards from deals CAN ONLY go into Collections.
- Thingamabobs CAN ONLY be played from Collections.
If you see anyone breaking the rules, call them out so they don't break the game!
Using Thingamabobs
You CAN'T play Thingamabobs from your hand or from a deal.
To play a Thingamabob, put it face up in the Discard Pile, then follow the instructions on the card.
Trading in Sets
After cards have been added to Collections, all players MUST trade in all completed sets in their Collections.
You must trade in completed sets immediately. Trade in all sets of Nasties BEFORE you trade in completed sets of Creatures.
1. Trade in Nasties
First, put all COMPLETED SETS of Nasties face up into the Discard Pile. Follow the instructions on each set to see what terrible thing happens to you.
- Trade in 2 Poison Pill Bugs: the buyer may steal 1 card from your Collection and put it into theirs. If they don't want any of your cards, they don't have to steal one.
- Trade in 2 Loan Sharks: the buyer may steal up to 2 cards from your Collection and put them into theirs. That means they can steal 2, 1, or even 0 cards from you.
- Trade in 3 Trojan Horses: the buyer steals 1 point token from you. The buyer gets nothing if you have no point tokens.
2. Trade in Creatures
Next, put all COMPLETED SETS of Creatures face up into the Discard Pile. Then take 1 Point Token for each set you traded in.
- Trade in any 4 Tiny Creatures: Collect 1 point token.
- Trade in any 3 Medium Creatures: Collect 1 point token.
- Trade in any 2 Big Creatures: Collect 1 point token.
- Trade in Just 1 Giant Creature: Collect 1 point token.
Ending Your Turn
After all players have traded in ALL completed sets from their Collections, everyone draws cards until they have 5 in their hand. Your turn is now over, and the player with the Buyer Squatch is the new Buyer and takes the next turn.
No Cards Left in the Draw Pile?
Shuffle the cards in the Discard Pile to form a new Draw Pile and keep playing.
Winning the Game
3-4 Players: The first player to have 4 Point Tokens at the END of any turn wins!
5-6 Players: The first player to have 5 Point Tokens at the END of any turn wins!
If someone is about to win, try to steal their Point Tokens before the end of the turn, or they will win the game!
Ties
If two or more players win at the same time, keep playing until one player has enough Point Tokens to win AND has more Point Tokens than anyone else.
A Note About Nasties Cards
It's always bad to collect Nasties, even if you're the Buyer. When you complete a set of Nasties and cash it in, there will be a new Buyer and THEY get to decide which cards you lose!
2-Player Changes
When playing with only 2 players, make the following changes:
- Leave the Buyer Squatch and the Playmats in the box (you won't need them).
- Each player draws 5 cards. You can look at your cards, but keep them secret. Pick a player to go first.
- On your turn, look at your hand. Then pick 3 cards to put FACE DOWN on the table. Either:
- All 3 in front of you, or
- All 3 in front of them, or
- 2 in front of you and 1 in front of them, or
- 1 in front of you and 2 in front of them.
- Then pick 1 card to flip face up.
- The other player DOESN'T get to flip over an additional card (unless they play a Thingamabob that allows them to).
- The other player must choose:
- Accept the Deal: Both players take the offered deals in front of them into their Collections (even if one player gets no cards!), or
- Reverse the Deal: Swap the offered deals – they take the cards in front of you, and you take the cards in front of them into your Collections (even if one player gets no cards!).
Both players will put the cards they take into their Collections.
- Any time you trade in a set of Nasties, the other player decides what cards you lose (when applicable).
- At the end of each turn make sure both players have 5 cards in their hand, and that you alternate taking turns.
- The first player to have 5 Point Tokens at the END of a turn wins!
