The Scorpion
Written rules text (BGG item description):
The Scorpion moves exactly two spaces around the Hive. Additionally it suppresses any adjacent enemy bug so that they aren't permitted to flip (see the orange outlined black Fly), with the exception of the Shieldbug which is immune to the Scorpion's attack. When the Scorpion is covered its powers are disabled.
Editor's note on the written text: the BGG source prints "f lip" with a stray space; it is transcribed here as "flip".
Rules diagram (titled "Scorpion"):
- Scorpion moves by exactly 3 spaces (like a Spider).
- BUT Scorpion cannot be:
- Crawled over
- Jumped over
- Moved by other pieces
- Mosquitoes cannot copy Scorpion's passive ability.
Diagram illustrations:
- Movement: a Scorpion on the Hive is shown with green move paths numbered in steps 1, 2 and 3 radiating out across empty hexes, each path ending three spaces from the Scorpion.
- Restrictions: orange arrows with red X marks show a bug attempting to crawl over the Scorpion, a bug attempting to jump over the Scorpion, and a piece attempting to move the Scorpion, each marked as not permitted.
Discrepancy Between the Sources
The two sources do not describe the same piece:
- The written text gives a movement of exactly two spaces around the Hive. It says the Scorpion suppresses any adjacent enemy bug so that it cannot flip, except the Shieldbug, and that its powers are disabled when it is covered. It says nothing about crawling, jumping or moving the Scorpion, and nothing about Mosquitoes.
- The diagram gives a movement of exactly 3 spaces, like a Spider. It says the Scorpion cannot be crawled over, jumped over or moved by other pieces, and that Mosquitoes cannot copy its passive ability. It says nothing about the flip suppression, the Shieldbug exception, or the covered-piece rule.
The written text and the diagram cannot both be followed as stated. Players should agree which version to use before play; this transcription does not choose between them.
