Components

  • 100 number cards (in five colours, numbered 1–10)
  • 14 irritation cards
  • 30 Schwupps cards

Goal of the Game

Try to play all of your cards onto the discard piles in the centre. However, it is not as simple as it sounds, because you may only play certain cards. The Schwupps cards tell you which. Schwupp a row here, irritate the other players there, and get rid of your hand of cards, and you will have a good chance of winning the game.

Setup

First, shuffle the Schwupps cards and place four of them face up in the centre of the table in two rows of two. Place the remaining Schwupps cards face down in a pile to the left of the two rows, and turn over the top card of that pile. To the right of the two rows formed will be the Schwupps discard pile during the game (see illustration below).

Then, shuffle the number cards and place one face up next to each of the four Schwupps cards. These are the first cards of the four discard piles.

Finally, shuffle the remaining number cards together with the irritation cards and deal each player the number of cards shown here, depending on the number of players:

  • 2 players: 25 cards
  • 3 players: 20 cards
  • 4 players: 15 cards
  • 5 players: 12 cards

The cards you receive form your personal draw pile. Place them face down in front of you without looking at them, then draw the first four to form your starting hand.

Place the cards left over from dealing face down in a common draw pile.

Setup for 3 players (diagram labels: Common draw pile; Schwupps cards face up; Schwupps card pile; Schwupps discard pile; numbered card discard pile; each player's personal draw pile and hand of cards).

Playing a Game

On your turn, you must perform at least one of the following three actions. You must choose the order of the actions you want, and two of them may even be performed more than once. The actions are:

  • Play a number card (more than once per turn if you want)
  • Play an irritation card and make a Schwupp (more than once per turn if you want)
  • Schwupp without an irritation card (only once per turn)

When you have finished performing actions, draw cards from your personal draw pile until you have four cards in your hand again. This marks the end of your turn. If you already have four or more cards in your hand, your turn ends without drawing cards.

Play a Number Card (more than once per turn if you want)

Play a number card from your hand onto one of the four discard piles. The Schwupps cards next to each of the piles show which cards may be played there.

There are seven different Schwupps cards:

"+1", "+2", "−1" or "−2" cards: If the Schwupps card shows "+1", "+2", "−1" or "−2", you may only play a card whose value is higher (+) or lower (−) than the value of the visible card on this pile. The colour of the card does not matter.

"Higher than 10 / Lower than 1": If you are asked to play a card higher than 10, start counting again from 1 and play the corresponding card. Likewise, start from 10 when you are asked to play a card lower than 1.

Example: It is Doro's turn. She plays her blue 10 onto the purple 1. Then she plays her green 2 onto the red 10.

Same number: If this Schwupps card is next to one of the piles, you may only play cards that have the same number as the visible card on this pile. The colour of the card does not matter.

Same colour: If this Schwupps card is next to one of the piles, you may only play cards that have the same colour as the visible card on this pile. The value of the card does not matter.

Same colour or same number ("or"): If this Schwupps card is next to one of the piles, you may only play cards that have the same colour and/or the same number as the visible card on this pile.

Play an Irritation Card and Schwupp (more than once per turn if you want)

Play an irritation card from your hand, return it to the box, and Schwupp. After the Schwupp, give the top card of the common draw pile to a player of your choice: they must add this card to their hand.

What Is a Schwupp?

"Schwupp" means moving the top card of the Schwupps card pile into one of the two rows, one position. Shift the Schwupps cards of the chosen row one position, so that the first card of the row is now the top card of the Schwupps card pile, and the second card of the row is the one that was previously first. The card that was the second card of the row is now on the Schwupps discard pile (as shown in the drawing).

Before: / After: (diagram showing the row shifting by one position, with "or" indicating either row may be chosen).

Schwupp Without an Irritation Card (only once per turn)

Once per turn, you may make a Schwupp without playing an irritation card. But after this, you must draw one card from the common draw pile and put it into your hand.

Note: If you cannot play a card from your hand at the start of your turn, you must make a Schwupp without an irritation card. You cannot pass!

Example of a Turn

A: It is Juan's turn. He plays an irritation card and returns it to the box. 1 He makes a Schwupp in the bottom row. 2 Then he gives Doro the top card of the common draw pile. She must put it in her hand. 3

B: After making the Schwupp, he may play his green 10 onto the yellow 2. 4

C: Then he makes Schwupps in the top row without an irritation card 5 and takes a card from the common draw pile and puts it in his hand. 6 Now he may play his purple 1 onto the blue 10 and then put down the red 2. 7

D: Juan cannot play any more cards, so he draws three cards from his personal draw pile to refill his hand to four cards. 8 His turn ends.

When the Schwupps Pile or the Common Draw Pile Runs Out

If you have made the last Schwupp and the pile is empty, shuffle the cards of the Schwupps discard pile and place them again to the left of the rows.

If the common draw pile runs out, shuffle the cards of the various discard piles, leaving only the top card of each pile in place, and turn the rest over to form the common draw pile.

End of the Game

The game ends immediately when a player has used up their entire personal draw pile and has played the last card from their hand. This player wins the game.

Schwupps Tournament

Play as many games as there are players. At the end of each game, record 1 negative point for each card you still have in your hand and in your personal draw pile. The winner of the game scores five positive points. The player to the left of the winner is the starting player in the next game. At the end of the last game, the player with the most positive points or the fewest negative points wins the tournament.

  • The source is an unofficial community translation (Spanish) of the German AMIGO rules. Obvious misprints in the Spanish ("Deber" for "Debes", "dor pilas" for "dos pilas", "seguna" for "segunda", "RDesplaza" for "Desplaza", "Jugadoress" on the cover) were read as their evident intended words and rendered correctly in English.
