1 playing field made of 4 punched cardboard pieces and a 4-part fence 4 side boundaries 4 piglets 1 "Mother sow" timer 1 mud ball 1 puddle (ring) 9 "Wash yourself!" chips (6 × "white soap" chip, 3 × "pink soap" chip)
Before the First Game
Carefully punch out all the cardboard parts. Take the piglets, the timer and the mud ball out of their packaging.
Setup
- Insert the four punched cardboard pieces into the individual compartments of the fence by carefully sliding them under the retaining tabs (Figure 1).
- Join the four fence parts into a playing field in the order shown in the illustration below.
- Attach the four side boundaries to the fence as shown (Figure 2).
- The piglets go into the cut-outs at the edge of the playing field. They are hooked in from below (Figure 3).
- The underside of the timer has four elongated protrusions, and the recess in the centre of the playing field has four matching cut-outs. Place the timer in the recess in the centre of the playing field so that it locks into place.
- Shuffle the 9 "Wash yourself!" chips face down thoroughly, then stack them into a tower.
- Set out the mud ball.
- Set the puddle (ring) aside for now. You will not need it until later.
- Place the game in the middle of the table so that every player can reach it easily.
Player count:
- 4 players: Each player chooses one piglet.
- 3 players: One player plays with two piglets; the other two each play with one piglet. Because the player with two piglets has a higher risk of collecting a "Wash yourself!" chip, you rotate clockwise after each round, so that a different player always plays with two piglets.
- 2 players: Each player plays with two piglets lying next to each other.
Note: the game should not be played on a table made of soft wood. We recommend placing something underneath for protection, or simply moving to the floor or another hard-wearing surface.
Goal of the Game
The goal is to avoid being caught by the mud ball and to collect as few "Wash yourself!" chips as possible. When a player has collected three "Wash yourself!" chips, the game ends, and that player is the cleanest piglet for this game. And that is not what any decent pig wants to be!
And Off We Go
The player who can grunt most beautifully begins and becomes the first "timekeeper" of the game. The timekeeper sets the time on the timer and flicks the first mud ball.
Setting the Timer
The timekeeper presses the mother sow's head down into the washtub and then winds it clockwise (follow the direction of the curly tail arrow). The more often you turn it, the longer the mother sow bathes before she springs back out of her bathwater. The game starts as soon as the timekeeper lets go of the timer.
Important! Note to parents: Please explain to your child how the timer is wound. Wind the timer only until you feel resistance, the so-called stop. To avoid damaging the timer, this stop must not be overwound!
Flicking the Mud Ball
The timekeeper begins the round and, as the first player, flicks the mud ball into a fellow player's field.
How is the ball flicked? You flick the mud ball by briefly pressing your piglet's head with your fingertips, with the flat of your hand, or with your fist. This makes the piglet's two arms come together, and the mud ball flies to the next player.
If the mud ball does not fly over the fence but rolls back into your own field, quickly press your piglet's head again!
Every second counts! The timer is rattling and the mother will soon surface from her washtub! So hurry up and flick the mud ball on as fast as possible.
The mud ball is thrown out of play: The player who threw the mud ball out of play brings it back into the game. They place the ball in front of their piglet and carry on playing. If the mud ball flies out of play at the very moment the time runs out, no player receives a "Wash yourself!" chip. The player who threw the mud ball out of play simply starts a new round.
The mud ball rolls past the side of a piglet: If a player presses their piglet's head for too long, too often or too early, the mud ball may roll past the side of the piglet. That player brings the ball back into the game. They place it in front of their piglet and carry on playing.
End of the Round
As soon as the mother sow surfaces from her washtub with a "click" sound, the mud ball may no longer be flicked. Whoever has the mud ball lying in their field now takes the top "Wash yourself!" chip from the stack. There are two kinds of "Wash yourself!" chips:
"White soap" chip: The player must take this "Wash yourself!" chip. In the next round, that player becomes the new timekeeper.
"Pink soap" chip: The player takes the chip and at the same time invites everyone to a "Puddle Party!" Now you can get rid of one of your chips.
How Does the "Puddle Party" Work?
From time to time the mother sow takes a short bath break to refresh her bathwater. During this time the piglets show off their skill and hold a "Puddle Party!" To do this, take the timer out of the centre of the playing field and set it aside. Place the puddle in the recess instead.
Now a great deal of delicacy is required, because the aim is to flick the mud ball skilfully into the puddle. The player who invited everyone to the "Puddle Party!" starts.
Puddle Party rules:
| If the player... | Then... |
|---|---|
| hits the puddle in the centre of the playing field | the player may give up one of their "Wash yourself!" chips. |
| has not hit the puddle after their third attempt and the mud ball is still in their field | the player passes the mud ball to their left-hand neighbour, who in turn has three attempts to hit the puddle. |
| hits a fellow player's field | the player's turn is over, and the next player is up. That player likewise has three attempts to hit the puddle. |
| flicks the mud ball out of the playing field | the player places the mud ball back in their field and carries on as before. |
Tip: the Puddle Party takes a little practice! It works best if you gently press your piglet's head with your fingertips.
You keep playing until one player succeeds in hitting the puddle. That player may give up any one of their "Wash yourself!" chips (if they have one). That chip goes back to the bottom of the stack.
Now take the puddle back out of the recess in the centre of the playing field and put the timer back there. The player who has just been allowed to give up one of their "Wash yourself!" chips is the new timekeeper for the next round.
End of the Game
As soon as a player has collected three "Wash yourself!" chips, the game ends. That player is the cleanest piglet for this game. The player who has collected the fewest "Wash yourself!" chips may rejoice, because they have won the game. If several players have the same number of chips, there may be several winners.
Team Variant for Groups of up to 8 Players
The rules apply as before. However, you now divide into active players, called the "piglet players" (Ferkelspieler), and passive players, called the "tappers" (Klopfer). One piglet player and one tapper each form a team.
The "Puddle Party" is dropped – that is, in this version you have no way of getting rid of your "Wash yourself!" chips.
With 8 players: The piglet players play as before with their piglets; however, they now play with their eyes closed (blindfold them if necessary). Each tapper stands behind their piglet player. By gently tapping the back or shoulder with the hand, the tapper lets the piglet player know that the mud ball is now lying in their field and must be flicked away.
With 6 players: One piglet player plays with two piglets. Their tapper taps either the right or the left shoulder (see the rule for the 4-player team variant). The other two piglet players each play with one piglet (see the 8-player team variant).
With 4 players: The two piglet players each play with two piglets lying next to each other. The two tappers each tap their piglet players either on the left or the right shoulder. In this way the piglet players know whether the mud ball is lying in the left or right playing field and with which of the two piglets they must flick the mud ball away.
As soon as a team has collected three "Wash yourself!" chips, the game ends. That team has, unfortunately, lost this time.
