Setup and Overview
You can add all the new Patient, Diagnosis, Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Research cards into your game, just by shuffling them in their corresponding decks. Below you can find all the additional, special rules that some of these new cards introduce. The new Electrocardiogram (ECG) tiles are sorted along with the existing ones during Setup, when playing with the ICU expansion.
The Objective cards included add a new difficulty level (Very Hard) to the Objective cards used in the Rush M.D. base game and, along with the existing ones, they are all available for the players to choose from during Setup.
Before playing, decide which of the following modules you want to use. You may use one, multiple, or all of them, in any combination.
NOTE: Most of the modules have been designed with experienced players in mind and make the game a bit more challenging. If you have not played Rush M.D. before, we suggest that you play a few games first, just with the base game, to become familiar with it prior to adding any of them to your game.
Repeat Urinalysis
Sometimes it is deemed necessary to repeat a test in order to verify a diagnosis.
The Rush M.D. - KS2 Promo Pack includes 6 Urinalysis Diagnosis cards featuring two pairs of letters on their back instead of one. Contrary to the rest of the Urinalysis Diagnosis cards, these new cards require for you to locate two different Urinalysis tokens, one for each pair of letters featured, and then place both tokens in the Patient's Bed.
NOTE: You may locate both Urinalysis tokens required as part of a single Urinalysis Action.
One at a time, as you would normally do, flip over the Urinalysis tokens until you reveal a different, matching Urinalysis token for each pair of letters shown on the back of the top card of the Urinalysis Diagnosis deck. Both letters of a pair should appear highlighted on one token for it to match. This Urinalysis Diagnosis card requires one matching token for CD and a different one for EF.
Scenarios
Overcoming challenges is all in a day's work for the medical staff.
This module comes with 10 Scenario cards, accompanied by 2 double-sided Unavailable Action/Disinfection tokens and the Temporary Admission Restrictions (Action Reminder) card, which are to be used in specific Scenarios.
Just before starting to set up the game, choose one of the Scenario cards. Each of these cards provides you with additional, detailed instructions that you must follow, and they apply for the whole duration of the upcoming game. Scenarios may affect the Setup of the game, the preparation of each of the 4 rounds and/or the Actions you may perform during the Action Phase.
Helicopter
Patients in a great medical emergency or located in inaccessible places require air transport.
This module comes with a cardboard 3D Helicopter, featuring a Doctor Action slot, and 2 Helipad tiles. Instructions on how to assemble the Helicopter can be found on our website www.artipiagames.com.
To use the Helicopter in your games, during Setup place one of the Helipad tiles next to the Patient Admission area ("Hospital Helipad") and the other one as far away from the Hospital Helipad as you see fit ("Remote Helipad"). A distance of approximately 1.5 m / 5 ft between the Helipad tiles is suggested. However, feel free to adjust the distance as needed for a more tailored experience. Then, place the Helicopter on top of the Hospital Helipad. Depending on the number of players, pick a number of Hospitalized Patient cards from the respective deck and place them in a face-down pile next to the Remote Helipad, in order to form the Emergency Airlift deck.
| Number of Players | Emergency Airlift Deck (Hospitalized Patients) |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | 4 |
| 3 | 6 |
| 4 | 8 |
To win the game when playing with the Helicopter module, in addition to meeting the requirements set by the Objective card, you must also successfully admit to the Hospital ALL the Patients from the Emergency Airlift deck.
The new Actions that are now available during the Action Phase are:
-
Emergency Airlift (Hospital Helipad Takeoff): While the Helicopter stands on the Hospital Helipad and is not carrying a Patient, place the Doctor Hourglass on top of the Helicopter, on the designated slot. Then, lift the Helicopter in the air and "fly" it to the Remote Helipad. Without touching the Hourglass, keep the Doctor Hourglass balanced on top of the Helicopter until you successfully land the Helicopter on the Remote Helipad. If the Hourglass drops before you complete all the "landing maneuvers" (before the Helicopter can stand up on its own), the entire process must be repeated until successfully performed. Once the landing is successfully performed, draw the top Hospitalized Patient card of the Emergency Airlift deck and place it face-up within the Helicopter.
IMPORTANT: At this moment, the Hospitalized Patient has not been admitted to the Hospital just yet; therefore, while the Helicopter remains on the Remote Helipad, the Patient to be retrieved does not count toward completing your task at hand and will be ignored during the Patient Evaluation Phase.
IMPORTANT: The Doctor Hourglass sent to the Remote Helipad for the retrieval of the Patient cannot be used to perform any Action other than the Emergency Airlift (Remote Helipad Takeoff) Action, until the Helicopter successfully lands back on the Hospital Helipad.
-
Emergency Airlift (Remote Helipad Takeoff): While the Helicopter stands on the Remote Helipad and is carrying a Patient, place anew the Doctor Hourglass on top of the Helicopter, on the designated slot. Then, lift the Helicopter in the air and "fly" it back to the Hospital Helipad. Without touching the Hourglass, keep the Doctor Hourglass balanced on top of the Helicopter until you successfully land the Helicopter on the Hospital Helipad. If the Hourglass drops before you complete all the "landing maneuvers" (before the Helicopter can stand up on its own), the entire process must be repeated until successfully performed. Once the landing is successfully performed, the Hospitalized Patient inside the Helicopter has, for all intents and purposes, been admitted to the Hospital (i.e., the Patient does count toward completing your task at hand and will be evaluated, as usual, during the Patient Evaluation Phase). Immediately, pick up the Patient card from within the Helicopter and place it directly on any available Bed in either Ward. If there are no available Beds at that moment, the Patient must remain inside the Helicopter and the Helicopter must remain parked on the Hospital Helipad. You may move the Patient to a Ward as soon as there is an available Bed.
NOTE: If at any moment between the takeoff and the landing, the Doctor Hourglass is knocked over, the Helicopter must then be placed back to the takeoff Helipad tile and the Doctor Hourglass must be reset before attempting to perform the Emergency Airlift Action once again.
Making helicopter sounds while "flying" the Helicopter is not required but is highly encouraged!
Medication Shortage
Medication shortage presents a significant challenge to the medical staff, who have to cope with the limited supplies available to them.
This module comes with 4 Medication Shortage tokens, one for each round of the game. Each of these tokens lists the quantities of every type of Medication that are available, for that particular round, to be taken from the Supply each time you perform the Store Medication Action. The quantities of Pills, IV Drugs and/or IV Fluids to be supplied are slightly decreased compared to the original quantities listed on the Action Indicator below the Medication Storage area.
During Setup, shuffle all Medication Shortage tokens and place them in a face-down pile next to the Pharmacy area of the Blood Bank & Pharmacy game board. At the beginning of each round, before the Medical Council Phase, reveal the top Medication Shortage token and place it on the Pharmacy, completely covering the Action Indicator below the Medication Storage area. For this round, whenever you perform the Store Medication Action during the Action Phase, you may take from the Supply any of the indicated items in the quantities listed on that particular Medication Shortage token. At the end of the round, discard the current Medication Shortage token.
Expired Medications
Expired medications can be, at best, less effective, if not even risky to be administered. Therefore, they must be safely disposed of.
The Rush M.D. - KS2 Promo Pack includes a custom die depicting all types of Pills, IV Drugs and IV Fluids and introducing the additional module of "Expired Medications". At the beginning of each round, before the Medical Council Phase, roll the die twice. For each roll, you must return all (if any) of the depicted Medication, from the Medication Storage area of the Pharmacy to the Supply.
NOTE: You may adjust the difficulty of this module by rolling the die only once/three or even more times, at the beginning of each round.
Medication Donations
Donations of specifically requested medication that cover the needs of the patients are more than welcome!
The Rush M.D. - KS2 Promo Pack includes a custom die depicting all types of Pills, IV Drugs and IV Fluids and introducing the additional module of "Medication Donations". At the beginning of each round, before the Medical Council Phase, roll the die twice. For each roll, take from the Supply the depicted Medication in the quantities listed on the Action Indicator below the Medication Storage area and place them in the Medication Storage area of the Pharmacy (i.e. just like you would normally do, during the Action Phase, when you perform the Store Medication Action).
NOTE: For an easier game, you may adjust the number of die rolls, at the beginning of each round, up to four.
NOTE: In case you are playing with both Expired Medications and Medication Donations modules, you should first resolve the die rolls to check for Expired Medications before resolving the die rolls to accept the Medication Donations.
ICU Complications
Unforeseen medical complications may arise and they would require an immediate response by the medical team.
To use this module in your games, shuffle all ICU Complications cards and place them in a face-down pile next to the ICU game board.
As part of the Stabilize ICU Patient Action, immediately after performing all Procedures indicated on the ICU Patient card, draw an ICU Complications card and perform any additional Procedures depicted on its front side before placing the Stability token in the Patient's Bed.
IMPORTANT: Drawing an ICU Complications card does NOT interrupt the Stabilize ICU Patient Action.
ICU Complications cards may indicate that an additional Defibrillation or Electrocardiogram (ECG) must be performed to the ICU Patient or that an additional Pump Infused Drug (PID) must be provided. There are also ICU Complications cards that feature no additional Procedures and require no further actions; the Patient has been successfully stabilized and you may now place the Stability token in the Patient's Bed.
NOTE: Since PIDs must accompany the Patient throughout the Hospital until that Patient is discharged, an ICU Complications card depicting an additional PID must remain next to the Patient, serving as a reminder of the extra PID requirement during the Patient Evaluation Phase. As soon as the Patient exits the ICU and gets transferred to any available Ward Bed, the ICU Complications card must be placed on the corresponding Patient's Treatment area.
Symptoms of a Contagious Disease
Sometimes there is no doubt as to the fact that you have to deal with a contagious disease.
The Rush M.D. - KS2 Promo Pack includes 4 Hospitalized Patient cards featuring the "Contagious" symbol on their card. As soon as you move one of these Patients to a Ward, using the Hospitalize Patient Action, you must immediately draw an Epidemic card and place it on the Ward Treatment area of that Patient's Ward (see Epidemics, for more details, on page 18 of the Rush M.D. base game rulebook).
May Not Be Stabilized
Time is of the essence when it comes to medical emergencies. Evaluate the patient and provide treatment, stat!
The Rush M.D. - KS2 Promo Pack includes 4 ICU Patient cards featuring the "May not be Stabilized" symbol on their card. Contrary to the rest of the ICU Patients, these Patients cannot be considered stabilized even after all the required ICU Procedures (Defibrillation, Electrocardiogram and/or Pump Infused Drugs) have been successfully completed. Therefore, you must not place a Stability token in the Patient's Bed as you would normally do, as part of the Stabilize ICU Patient Action.
NOTE: Since the Condition of all ICU Patients is Critical, you should diagnose and successfully treat ICU Patients featuring the "May not be Stabilized" symbol within a single round.
Inconclusive Results
Sometimes exams do not provide you with enough information as to what is wrong with a patient. These results are considered inconclusive.
When you draw a Diagnosis card featuring the "Inconclusive Results" symbol, discard it. The entire Action must be performed once more. If the sand in the Hourglass is still running, you must wait for it to run out and then start all over.
Rush M.D. Soundtrack
The Rush M.D. Soundtrack can be used as an alternative to the timer you need to set each round of the game and it should be started playing as soon as the Action Phase begins.
The Rush M.D. Soundtrack consists of several music tracks with different duration, depending on the game mode you are going to play, and they all come in three different versions for you to choose from:
- Original music only (as composed by Eduardo Morillo),
- Original music with an English voice-over informing you of the time remaining, and
- Original music with thematic special effects also embedded.
All versions of the Rush M.D. Soundtrack can be found on our website www.artipiagames.com.
Transcriber's note: the source's licence sentence on the soundtracks (personal use only, written authorization needed for other uses) is omitted as publisher boilerplate.
