Components
- 40 Robbers (5 gangs)
- 30 x 1 Jewel
- 10 x 5 Jewels
- 10 x 10 Jewels
- 14 Nobles
- 1 Overview card
Setup
You each take the eight robbers of one gang (of one color) to form your hand of cards. You also each take eight jewels from the supply.
1 x 5 + 3 x 1 = 8 jewels
Your jewels should be clearly visible and countable at all times.
Shuffle the nobles to form a face-down deck.
Expert variant: Shuffle the nobles and draw eight at random. Put the other nobles back in the box. Reveal the eight drawn nobles, then shuffle them again to form a face-down deck. Now you all know which nobles will appear, but not their order.
Game Overview & Goal
You turn a noble face up. Then everyone plays a robber simultaneously. If you played the strongest robber, you'll enjoy the victim's "favor". Usually, you'll steal his jewels. Sometimes you'll let him foist something on one of your opponents or swipe something from one of them. If you played the weakest robber you'll get some pity jewels.
At the end of the game, the player with the second-most jewels wins.
Round Sequence
Turn the top noble face up. Now each player chooses one robber from his hand and places it face down in front of him. Reveal these robbers simultaneously and compare their strengths.
Have you played the strongest robber of this round? If so, you enjoy the favor of the noble.
Have you played the weakest robber of this round? If so, take your robber's value in jewels from the supply.
Next, everyone removes the robber he played from the game by returning it to the box. Turn the next noble face up to start the next round.
Example: Rob has played the strongest robber 6. He enjoys the noble's favor, taking seven jewels from the supply. Ben has played the weakest robber 2. He takes two (his robber's value) pity jewels from the supply. Then each player puts the robber he played back in the box.
Ties
Are there several strongest robbers? If so, everyone involved in the tie enjoys the favor of the noble in full.
If the noble gives a choice of favor, each of the tied players secretly decides which he wants. Then count out loud and on three everyone announces his choice with a hand gesture (see next page → Nobles).
Example: Rob and Ben both played strength seven robbers 7 / 7. They cancel each other out, making Brigitte's and Anna's robbers the (joint) strongest this round 4 / 4. They each take the noble's five jewels. Emily played her strength zero robber 0. As this is the lowest robber, she "takes" zero jewels from the supply.
Exception: Are there several robbers with a strength of seven (the maximum)? If so, these cancel each other out. Anyone who played a strength seven robber leaves empty handed and returns his robber to the box immediately. Now, the second-strongest robber becomes the strongest. This could also lead to several (tied) second-strongest robbers becoming the strongest.
There can only be one chieftain!
Are there several weakest robbers? If so, each player involved in the tie takes the appropriate number of pity jewels from the supply.
Are all robbers of equal strength? If so, nobody enjoys the noble's favor and nobody gets any pity. (This is also the case if only robbers of the same strength are left after several strength seven robbers have canceled each other out; or if all players but one play a strength seven robber.)
Favor plus pity? Instead, you're getting zilch!
End of Game & Winner
The game ends at the end of the round in which everyone has played his last robber.
The player with the second-most jewels wins. If tied, there are multiple winners.
