Set-up

  • Remove all doubloon cards from the deck.
  • Shuffle the deck without the Jolly Roger card.
  • Deal 5 cards to each player. Hand limit is 5 cards. Anytime you have cards equal to or over your current hand limit, you do not draw more cards.
  • Place the Jolly Roger card back to the deck and reshuffle it.
  • The dealer starts the round.

Turn

  • Your turn consists of two phases: playing or discarding cards and then drawing new cards.

Phase 1: Play or discard one or more cards with the same icon, or play combinations listed in the combinations card.

  • Set played cards in front of you. Discarded cards go to the separate discard pile icon side up.

Phase 2: Draw cards up to your current hand limit. Then the next player starts their turn.

Round

  • Keep playing turns until someone draws the Jolly Roger card. Reveal it immediately. Other players can play one more turn after that, but do not draw new cards. Then the round ends.
  • Count the points from the played cards. Points are marked with a number on the card.
  • The player with the most points gets a doubloon card. In case of a draw, the player with less cards played wins.
  • The player with the least points shuffles the deck, deals new cards and starts a new round. Hand limits are reset to 5.
  • Player with 3 doubloon cards wins the game.

Combinations

Effects are immediate. Each combination is a rum card (the rum bottle icon) played together with the cards shown after it, joined by "+".

  • Bananarama! Rum & bananas: All players pass on their hands either clockwise or counterclockwise, whichever you choose.
  • Cuba Libre! Rum & limes: Shuffle everyone's hand cards together and deal them back, starting from yourself.
  • Keelhaul! Rum & cutlasses: Other players give you 2 cards each. Keep the ones you want and discard the rest.
  • Walk the Plank! Rum & pistols: Round ends as if the Jolly Roger card was drawn.

Special: Played rum cards affect hand limit. The first rum card raises hand limit to 6 and the second to 7. After that each rum card decreases your hand limit by 1.

Expansion

Expansion cards are marked with the compass icon. Expansion cards are optional for gameplay.

Set-up: The compass card is shuffled the same way as the Jolly Roger card.

Effects:

  • When the compass card is drawn, it is discarded, and all players must discard their hand cards, unless you have a cannon card. You can discard a cannon card instead and keep your other cards.

OR

  • You can play rat cards only when the compass card is drawn. Play all rat cards and discard the rest. Each rat counts as 1 point.

(The printed card reads "and and discard the rest"; the duplicated word is a typo in the source.)

Example

Example of a round:

  • Player 1 starts the game after cards are dealt. He plays 2 limes and then draws back 2 cards.
  • Player 2 then plays one rum card and draws 2 cards, so she has 6 cards.
  • Player 3 plays 3 bananas & rum and chooses hand cards to move clockwise. He does not draw more cards as he got 6 cards from Player 2 and his hand limit is 6.
  • Player 4 can only play one cutlass card that she got from Player 3. Then she draws 5 cards.
  • Player 1 plays 2 pistol cards and then draws 2 cards back. He draws the Jolly Roger card and places it to the table. Players 2, 3 and 4 can then play one more turn and then everyone calculates their points.
