How does the Tower detect my skull drop, and is the order skulls come out random?

At the end of your turn you drop a skull and an infrared sensor at the top tells the app the turn is over, which triggers events. Skulls released by the Tower can come out of an open portal or get trapped inside, and the order is random by design, so some games release skulls steadily and others in batches.
