Can I retreat from a battle?
The designer said retreat is only for the adversary, and the rulebook states the rest.

Only from the adversary. Against any other foe you must resolve all of its battle cards, and a card is always cleared (taking a corruption if you cannot pay). Against the adversary you must resolve at least one card, then you may retreat or continue, but only between cards: once the next card is revealed you must resolve it. Retreating costs no corruption and still earns the 2 spirit.
