Who gets the main companion at setup, and do I get its bonuses?

It depends on the companion. Some main companions start with the players (the back of the card says so) and the app tells you to give the card to the first player; others must be earned through a quest. A starting main companion gives its benefits, including Advantages, as if you had earned it.
