6 sets, each made up of:
- 6 Horticultural agent cards
- 1 Rotten turnip card
Also:
- 4 Beet cards
- 1 Starting player card
- 16 Vote cards
- 30 Mission cards
- 2 Rotten turnip indicators
- 2 Stinky indicators
- 3 Help cards
- Legupoints (the Legupoints are unlimited; if they run out you can use legumes to keep track of scores)
Setup
- Create the Role card deck. To do so, choose any one set (made up of 6 Horticultural agent cards and 1 Rotten turnip card) and add 4 Beet cards. This allows up to 9 players to play. See p. 14 for more players and other game modes. (A white circle indicates simple difficulty; a white square indicates complex difficulty.)
- Choose the starting player and give them the Starting player card with side A face up (see the "Voting" section for when it is flipped to side B). The starting player is the one who most recently watered a plant. Each time a new starting player is chosen, start with side A face up.
- Give each player a Vote card and place the Help cards on the table within reach of all players.
- Place the Rotten turnip and Stinky indicators in the center of the table.
- Prepare the Mission deck. To do so, shuffle all the Mission cards and form the Mission deck according to the number of players:
| Number of players | Mission deck |
|---|---|
| 4-5 players | 6 Mission cards |
| 6-8 players | 5 Mission cards |
| More than 8 players | 4 Mission cards |
- Place the Legupoints in an area accessible to all players.
Playing the Game
A game is made up of multiple missions in which you play with secret words. The game does not advance to the next mission until Legupoints have been awarded in a mission.
1. Start of the Mission and Choosing the Secret Word
Shuffle the Role card deck and deal one anonymously to each player. Then reveal the top card of the Mission deck. When there is no card left to reveal in this deck, the game ends immediately. This Mission card, together with the words on the Role cards, designates the Secret word that will be played with.
2. Word Turn
Starting with the starting player, and in clockwise order, each player has to say a word or proper name (for example Eiffel Tower or Joan of Arc, but not Yellow Sponge).
The horticultural agents, who know the secret word, have to refer to it so as to recognize one another. The beets, since they do not know it, will use the words said by the other players to choose which one to say and go unnoticed. The rotten turnip, who knows the secret word, will say any crazy thing in order to be expelled from the garden.
The horticultural agents and the rotten turnip cannot say the secret word itself during the Word turn, so if anyone says it... you know they are a beet ;)
The rotten turnip is a unique character and works differently from the other roles. It only wins Legupoints if it is expelled and, in addition, it stinks up another player who wins Legupoints. It is a more complicated role than it seems: if it is too blatant the other players may not want to expel it, but if it takes too long it may no longer have time to be expelled from the garden...
As a horticultural agent it is advisable not to say very obvious words so as not to give too many clues to the beets.
Optional: If you find it more fun, instead of using a single word you can use phrases, onomatopoeias or gestures.
3. Voting
When everyone has said a word, starting again with the starting player, a vote is held in which each player can choose "Nominate" or "Pass".
- Nominate. If you want to expel a player from the mission, place your Vote card in their play area showing this face. A player can nominate themselves.
- Pass. If you do not want to nominate anyone, place your Vote card in your own play area showing this face.
If a player wants to vote before it is their turn they may do so, but remember: votes cannot be changed once made.
The result of the vote can be one of the following two:
- No one is expelled: If ALL players vote "Pass", or if there is a tie among the most nominated players, another Word turn begins (keeping the same secret word and roles). To indicate this, the Starting player card is flipped to side B. If it is already on side B, the mission in play ends.
- Someone is expelled: If one player has a majority of nominations, they are expelled from the mission. A difference of one nomination is enough.
Although we recommend playing with the Vote cards, if you prefer you can proceed in the same way with gestures. To nominate someone you point, and to pass you cross your arms. Nominations made cannot be changed.
A single nomination can cause a player's expulsion, i.e., it prevails over all the pass votes.
When a player is expelled from the mission they have to reveal their role. At this moment, the following scenarios can take place:
- A horticultural agent is expelled: the mission in play ends and the beets win it.
- A beet is expelled: they leave their Role card face up. The mission in play continues and another Word turn begins keeping the same secret word and roles.
- A rotten turnip is expelled: they leave their Role card face down, place the Rotten turnip indicator on it, and give the Stinky indicator to the player who they think is going to win Legupoints (whether that player is expelled or not). If this player wins, the rotten turnip will win double the Legupoints. The mission in play continues and another Word turn begins keeping the same secret word and roles.
Each time a vote is resolved, all players take back their Vote card.
Advanced rule: It may happen that after the Role cards are dealt there are as many or more beets than horticultural agents. If this is so, and the beets notice, the horticultural agents cannot win the mission. To handle this, if in the first Vote of a mission no player is expelled, a horticultural agent may flip their Role card to indicate that there is a number of beets equal to or greater than the number of horticultural agents. After this, all players flip their Role cards. If the horticultural agent was right, the mission in play ends and only they obtain 2 Legupoints. If, on the contrary, they were wrong, all players except them obtain 1 Legupoint. In both cases there is no winning side. The starting player rotates.
4. End of the Mission
The end of the mission can occur in the following situations:
- a. In the Vote a horticultural agent is expelled.
- b. In the Vote no one is expelled and side B of the Starting player card was already face up.
- c. Only 2 players remain.
The winners are determined as shown on the end-of-mission diagram: in a, the beets win the mission; in b and c, if there are hidden beets (beets not yet expelled) the beets win the mission, and if there are NO hidden beets the horticultural agents win the mission. The beets then have a last and only opportunity to guess the secret word.
In these cases, the beets together have a single opportunity to guess the secret word that was being played with. In case of doubt, the last beet expelled decides. If the beets guess the secret word, they prevent the horticultural agents from receiving Legupoints. If they do not guess it, the horticultural agents keep the victory.
The rotten turnip neither wins nor loses the mission; simply, if it was previously expelled, it obtains double the Legupoints of the stinky player.
After resolving who has won the mission, Legupoints are distributed as follows:
Legupoints summary
- Horticultural agent: 1 Legupoint for winning the mission.
- Beet: 1 Legupoint for winning the mission; 1 additional Legupoint for remaining hidden.
- Rotten turnip: double the Legupoints won by the stinky player.
Once the Legupoints have been distributed, the mission ends. If there are Mission cards left to reveal, the game is not over yet. In this case, all Role cards are collected and returned to the Role deck. The Starting player card rotates (clockwise) to the next player who won the most Legupoints in the last mission; in case of a tie, the closest player (clockwise) is chosen. A tie at 0 points could occur. Return to "Start of the Mission and Choosing the Secret Word", revealing the next Mission card, until no cards are left to reveal in the Mission deck.
End of the Game
After all missions have been played, the total Legupoints are counted and the winner is declared. In case of a tie, the second player wins, and so on.
Variants
Chaos (for 10-16 players)
In this game mode the Role card deck is formed with the contents of 2 different sets plus 4 beets. The resulting deck has a total of 18 cards. A rotten turnip can infect another rotten turnip.
In this game mode, if the beets win the mission they only take 1 Legupoint each (whether or not they remain hidden), and if the horticultural agents win they take 2 Legupoints. In this game mode the beets cannot guess the secret word.
If you have "Remolacha Expansion" you can play this game mode with 20 players. Simply, when forming the Role deck, include the 4 extra beets from the expansion. The resulting deck has 22 cards.
No cards (4-Infinity)
This is how we always used to play Remolacha or "Blanco".
In this game mode, the starting player does not belong to any side and does not play. They are in charge of deciding the secret words and assigning the roles, information they communicate in each player's ear (it can also be done with slips of paper or with a phone). The rotten turnip does not exist in this game mode. The order of play is the same as in the other modes, except that the starting player does not take part. There are no Legupoints and each game consists of a single mission only.
