Variant 1: Multiplayer Game
-
Place the top 40 chart (the game board) on the table.
-
Place the 350 playing cards (trivia side face down) and a mobile phone (to access the QR codes during play) next to the game board. Make sure you are always online during play!
-
Place the hourglass next to the game board so that it is clearly visible to all players.
-
Each player chooses their own record and places it on the game board near space 40.
-
Each playing card contains 5 clues (with assigned point values) that point to the correct artist or band. The faster you give the correct answer, the more places you can move up the top 40 chart. If you have not given the correct answer by the first 4 clues, your last option is to scan the QR code, which leads you to a song on Spotify (no subscription needed!). You can now listen to music and still move 1 place up the chart... if you give the correct answer!
Point Values
- History: 7 points
- Trivia: 5 points
- Album: 3 points
- Big Hit: 2 points
- QR code (link to Spotify): 1 point
(In the booklet, this point table sits on the page between steps 5 and 6 of Variant 1.)
-
Roll the die! The player whose colour is rolled may begin the game. That player reads the first card and ultimately scans the QR code with the mobile phone.
-
To start the game, the starting player takes the top card, the hourglass is turned over, and the player first reads the clue with the highest point value. The hourglass is only used for the first 4 clues. Now the other players may try to give the correct answer. Careful: the hourglass keeps running, and time is limited! NOTE - The player who reads the card may not take part in this round.
The player who gives the correct answer first wins the point value of the corresponding clue. That player may now move their record forward on the game board by the number of spaces equal to the point value of the clue.
Tactical tip - try to give the correct answer at the clue with the highest point value!
But note! If a player gives a wrong answer, they must move their record back by the number of spaces equal to the point value of the clue.
-
If the hourglass runs out before the last clue (the QR code) is reached, this round is over. Nobody gets points! But you can of course still play the song!
-
The next player (clockwise) now takes a card and reads it aloud. Follow the game steps until there is a winner.
-
The first player to reach the number 1 position on the chart wins the game!

Variant 2: Teams (3 Teams of 2 Players)
-
Place the top 40 chart (the game board) on the table.
-
Place the 350 playing cards (trivia side face down) and a mobile phone (to access the QR codes during play) next to the game board.
-
Place the hourglass next to the game board so that it is clearly visible to all players.
-
Form 3 teams of 2 players.
-
Each team chooses its own record in the desired colour and places it on the game board at space 40.
-
Each playing card contains 5 clues (with assigned point values) that point to the correct artist or band. The faster you give the correct answer, the more places you can move up the top 40 chart. -
Roll the die! The team whose colour is rolled may begin the game. That team reads the first card and ultimately scans the QR code with the mobile phone.
-
To start the game, the team captain of the starting team takes the top card, starts the hourglass, and reads the clue with the highest point value, so that the next team (clockwise) can try to give the correct answer. This is not yet an open round. Only one team tries to guess which artist or group the clue refers to - more on this later. The challenged team can answer the first clue, or move on to the next clue with a lower point value. Note: the hourglass is only used for the first 4 clues.
If the answer is correct, the team wins the point value of the corresponding clue. The team may now move their record forward on the game board by the number of spaces equal to the point value. Tactical tip: try to give the correct answer at the clue with the highest point value! This way you climb the charts extra fast! A team may confer with each other before giving a final answer.
If the challenged team gives a wrong answer, or the hourglass has run out, the other team may try to steal the points by pointing out to them that they know the correct answer. They do this by calling out "steal!". The team now has the opportunity to give the correct answer to the same clue. If the answer is correct, the stealing team may move its record forward on the game board, depending on the point value of the clue.
Only a team that is not reading the card may steal.
NOTE - If the hourglass runs out before the last clue (the QR code) is reached, this round is over. Nobody gets points! But you can of course still play the song!
-
After team 1 has had its turn, follow the same steps with team 2 and team 3, clockwise.
-
The first team to reach the number 1 position on the chart wins the game!
Variant 3: Two-Player Game
-
Place the top 40 chart (the game board) on the table.
-
Place the 350 playing cards (trivia side face down) and a mobile phone (to access the QR codes during play) next to the game board. Make sure you are always online during play!
-
Place the hourglass next to the game board so that it is clearly visible to both players.
-
Each player chooses their own record and places it on the game board near space 40.
-

You can now listen to music and still move 1 place up the chart... if you give the correct answer!
-
To start the game, one of the two players takes the top card (decide between you who begins, or roll the die), the hourglass is turned over, and that player first reads the clue with the highest point value. The hourglass is only used for the first 4 clues. Now the other player may try to give the correct answer. This player may give an answer after each clue and receives the point value of their correct answer.
If the player gives a wrong answer, they must move their record back by the number of spaces equal to the point value of the clue.
-
If the QR code (link to Spotify) is played for 1 point, turn the hourglass over when the music is heard. The player must guess the artist of the song before the hourglass has run out.
-
The first player to reach the number 1 position on the chart wins the game!
