Goal of the Game
Snap up the tastiest bananas!
Set Up
Put all the banana tokens into the bag and mix them well.
Each player takes an island board and a set of monkey cards of the same color, with the values 0–7 and 10.
The player in the most ap-peel-ing outfit receives the starting player card.
Play
You play 3 seasons. Each season comprises several skirmishes and one feasting phase.
At the start of each skirmish, the starting player draws tokens from the bag one at a time.
- Bananas (of any color) are laid out in a row in the middle of the table.
- Parrots go beneath the next free space in the banana row. They form a group with the next banana to be drawn. Multiple parrots can belong to one group.
- Thunderclouds go above the banana row.
Once as many bananas have been laid out as there are players, it's time to swing into action. If no thundercloud were drawn, you play clockwise, beginning with the starting player.
If it's your turn and...
- ...none of your monkey cards is placed under a banana: place a monkey card from your hand under a banana of your choice. If no other player's monkey card is there yet, you can play one card of any value. If another player's monkey card is already there, your card must be of a higher value. The monkey of the lower value is chased away and goes back to its owner's hand.
- ...one of your monkey cards is already under a banana: you do nothing. It's the next player's turn.
The skirmish continues until every player has one monkey card under a banana. Now, everyone takes the banana their card is under and places it on a vacant space on their island board. Parrots belonging to your banana go beside your island.
If you take a banana and have no space left on your island, you must choose: either return the banana you just taken to the box, or return a banana of your choice from your island to make space. You can't return black bananas from your island.
You always take your banana's parrots, even if your island is full.
If your 0 card is laid out, return it to your hand. The other, higher-value, cards go to a face up discard pile. The last player to play a card gets the starting player card and the next skirmish starts.
Thunderclouds? Lightning Round!
If one or more thunderclouds are drawn from the bag, the skirmish must go faster, as we don't want to get wet.
Instead of playing monkey cards clockwise, during a lightning round, all players play a card face down in front of them and then reveal them at the same time. The player with the highest value gets to choose a banana first and places it on his or her island. The others follow in descending order of their card values.
If two or more players play the same value, the one sitting closest to the starting player, clockwise, chooses first. The last player to choose a banana gets the starting player card. The 0 cards are returned to their owners' hands and any other cards are discarded. Return the thundercloud tokens to the box.
The End of the Season – The Feasting Phase
When nobody has any more room on his or her island, the season ends with the feasting phase.
But first, the parrots get their share. Each of these pesky pollies snatches a banana of your choice of its color from your board. Return the banana along with the parrot to the box. If you have a parrot but no banana of its color, that parrot stays next to your island and tries again in the next season.
Now you may finally eat your delicious bananas... if they are ripe enough. Some bananas only become truly delicious over time.
- In the first season, you can only eat the brown bananas from your island.
- At the end of the second season, the yellow and the brown bananas are edible.
- After the third and final season, even the green bananas have ripened, and you may eat all the bananas on your island.
Take any bananas that you eat from your island and add them to your own personal point stack, showing only the top banana. Unripe bananas remain on your island.
Black bananas were ripe last year but now are revolting. Add them to your point stack at the end of each season, but they will subtract from your score.
When all players have eaten their ripe bananas, the next season begins. It's possible that players will now have varying numbers of bananas on their islands. The season continues until all islands are full.
Game End
After the third season, the game ends. Then you determine your score.
Each banana adds its printed value to your score, but black ones subtract theirs. The brown bananas with 15/2 and the yellow bananas with 20/2 are worth nothing if you have just one of them in your point stack. Only in pairs, they together are worth 15 or 20 points.
Monkey cards still in your hand at the end of the game add their value to your score.
Scoring Example: At the end of the third season, Boris has collected these bananas. He has only one brown 15/2, so unfortunately, he gets no points for that. However, the two yellow 20/2 bananas give him 20 points together. Altogether, his bananas give him 46 points. Along with his remaining cards in hand, this gives him a final score of 55 points.
If you have the most points, you win this lively contest. If tied, the tied player with the highest remaining monkey cards wins. If still tied, don't grab the coconut just yet and instead play another game.
