- 1 double-sided game board, consisting of 2 large jigsaw pieces (front side without illustrations, back side with a temple, waterfall, monkey tribe, etc.)
- 28 lava tiles
- 21 path tiles
- 5 boat tiles
- 8 time tiles
- 6 multi-tool tokens (wild tokens; also called jokers)
- 7 bonus tiles (for the variant)
- 2 game pieces: 1 tent and 1 adventurer
- 1 hourglass (90 seconds)
- 55 cards: 48 tool cards and 7 quest cards (for the 2nd variant)
Each tool card shows three different tool icons.
Game Setup
If you haven't played the game yet, use the front side of the game board (without the illustrations: temple, waterfall, monkey tribe, etc.). Once you are more familiar with the game, you can also use the (more challenging) back side with the illustrations (see "Variant 2" at the end).
- Combine the two halves of the game board. Place it in the center of the table, showing the side you want to play.
- Place the tent and the adventurer on the base camp. The single adventurer token represents the entire exploration team!
- Shuffle the 21 path tiles and place them in face-down piles next to the game board. Turn the top 7 path tiles face up as your party's supply.
- Shuffle the 28 lava tiles and place them in two face-down stacks on the corresponding two spaces at the top of the board.
- Place the 5 boat tiles in a face-down pile next to the dock on the beach.
- Form a timeline by placing a row of 3 time tiles next to the game board. The timeline goes from left to right. Put the hourglass next to the first time tile. Set aside the remaining 5 time tiles as a reserve.
- Place 3 multi-tool tokens next to the timeline. They are available to your party during the game. Set aside the remaining 3 multi-tool tokens as a reserve.
- Shuffle the 48 tool cards and place them in a face-down pile next to the game board. Distribute the top 12 tool cards as evenly as possible among your party.
Attention: Don't look at those cards just yet! Leave them face down on the table. Since you're playing together as a team, it does not matter if some of you have one less card available now or later during the game.
- The 7 bonus tiles and the 7 quest cards are only needed for the variants. Leave them in the box if you are playing the basic game.
Playing the Game
Your mission is clear: navigate the seemingly impenetrable jungle to take the team from the base camp – which is alarmingly close to the erupting Red Peak – to the beach at the south of the island, where a rescue boat is hopefully waiting …
The game takes place over several days. Each day has two phases: "Daytime" and "Evening." During Daytime, you discuss and lay out your path through the jungle and try to move the team away from the volcano. In this phase, the hourglass is running, i.e. "Daytime" lasts 90 seconds. In the Evening, you build your camp and collect any rewards you earned during Daytime and plan your next day. This phase is untimed.
Path Tiles
The path tiles will help you pass through the jungle. They must always be placed so that you can continue your escape, moving further away from the volcano and closer to the beach. Path tiles show a segment that is either straight or curved. From the base camp, place the tiles adjacent to each other so that they form one continuous path to the shore. The path must not leave the jungle and there must not be any forks or side paths. You can rotate path tiles any way you like before placing them, as long as they continue the existing path.
Also, each path tile has a series of icons:
- Tool icons are used for moving the exploring party through the path tiles.
- Reward icons are special rewards you will receive during the "Evening" phase of the turn.
- Volcano icons (with a number from 1 to 3): Careful, the lava is approaching …!
Reward Tokens
The reward icons on path tiles give the following rewards:
- Add 1 additional multi-tool to your supply next to the timeline.
- Add 1 (or 2) time tiles to the timeline.
- Reveal 1 (or 2) new path tiles from the stack and add them to your party's supply.
- Take that many new tool cards from the pile and distribute them so that each player has the same number of cards (if possible).
- Reveal a boat and place it face up on the corresponding space next to the beach. If there is already a boat there, you must decide now which one you want to keep. Remove the other boat from the game.
- Reveal 1, 2, or 3 lava tiles and place them on (or next to) the game board.
Tool Cards
Each tool card shows three different tool icons. The tool card icons match the tool icons found on the path tiles. Example: an axe, food and a water bottle.
When playing a tool card, you only declare that you are using one of the tools shown. Once declared, that card is discarded even if you have other tools that could be used on the card. Simply, each tool card is single use.
During Daytime
Follow these steps in this order during the Daytime phase of the turn.
-
Turn the hourglass over and place it on the next tile of the timeline. Your time is running, hurry up!
-
Now (and only now!) you may look at your tool cards. a. Try and visually match what tools you have and what tiles are visible on the table. b. You can only play tiles that you or the other players have tool cards for (or think you do!) c. As quickly as possible, discuss and decide which path tiles will you use and in what order and orientation will you place them? d. Players can discuss what tools they have and what combos they can build. e. There are no restrictions for your discussion, except this: don't show your tool cards to the other players!
Play example: "Let's use the path tile over there, the straight one with the 3-new-cards reward, that would be super useful! Who has a shovel? Who has a machete? I can contribute the torch. Or we take that other path tile and we use my hat if someone else can contribute …" etc.
-
Once you have agreed on a path tile, place it in the correct orientation next to the previous one on the game board. If you have time, you can place another tile, and another ... Remember your time keeps running!
-
At some point – and within the same 90 seconds! – you should stop placing path tiles and start moving the explorer token. Do not move the tent! You move the explorer token from one tool icon to the next along the newly laid out path tile. You want to keep moving until you have covered the last tool icon on the last played path tile. a. In order to move to a new tool icon on the path, a player must discard that tool icon from their hand. It does not matter which player discards the tool card. b. If no player owns the necessary tool, you must use one of your multi-tool tokens. They are wild tokens. Once a multi-tool token is used, return it immediately to the reserve. c. If there are no more multi-tool tokens available and no players have the tool necessary to continue to move to the end of the last tile, you are in trouble! If that happens, you must move the adventurer back to the previous path tile you successfully completed. Any path tiles still on the board that you did not complete are returned face-up to the party's supply. All discarded tool cards remain discarded.
-
Once you have finished moving (with or without setback), look at the hourglass. If it's still running, you're great, nothing happens. If time has run out, move the hourglass onto the next tile of the timeline. If there is no tile left on the timeline, take a new one from the reserve. If you do, you must also reveal a lava tile and play it. (See "In the Evening" for resolving lava tiles.)
In the Evening
Follow these steps in this order during the Evening phase of the turn. Players are not allowed to look at the tool cards in their hands during the Evening phase.
-
Move the tent along the path laid out during the Daylight phase of the turn. Whenever you move onto a path tile, you receive the rewards shown on that tile. If you receive new tool cards, distribute them so that each player has the same number of cards (if possible). You must not look at those new cards yet!
-
If you move onto a path tile with a volcano icon, reveal that many lava tiles. Count them out loud so you don't forget any.
There are three different lava tiles:
- No eruption! (7×) – Place the tile face up next to the game board. How lucky!
- Eruption! (17×) – Place the tile face up on the next empty path tile that is closest to the volcano. The lava follows your path, tile by tile.
- Double eruption! (4×) – Place this lava tile face up on the next empty path tile. Then, reveal an additional lava tile. If it's an eruption, put it on the next path tile. If it's another double eruption, repeat this process.
If you have to put a lava tile on the path tile occupied by your tent, the game ends immediately and you have lost!
-
If the tent is able to keep moving on to the next tile, do so until the tent and the adventurer token are on the same tile. Congratulations! The adventurers are still alive, and they can safely camp for the night!
-
Now is the time to make plans for the next day. a. The group can discuss which path tile you're going to place next. b. The group can make the optional decision to add resources. For each choice below, the players must reveal one lava tile and use it following the standard rules for lava tile placement. If a lava tile played at this time is placed on the tile with the tent and the adventurer, the game ends immediately and you have lost.
Options:
End of the Game
Repeat the Daylight and Evening phases until you have made it to the Boat Tile with both the adventurer and the tent. Depending on the boat, you might have to reveal final lava tiles. If the lava doesn't reach you now, you have won the game!
But if you get caught by the lava at any point during the game, you lose.
Variant 1: Bonus Tiles
You have the option to play with the additional bonus tiles. Shuffle these tiles face down and select 4 random tiles and place them face down on the 4 spaces on the game board showing a clearing in the jungle. Set aside the remaining 3 tiles without looking at them.
If your path leads across one of the clearings, reveal the bonus tile. In the Evening, after moving your tent, you will get the rewards shown on that tile. Then remove it from the game. You still need to have a successful path "over" the bonus tile to claim it.
These are the bonus tiles:
- Add 1 additional multi-tool.
- Add 1 time tile to the timeline.
- Reveal 1 path tile or 1 boat. Distribute 2 tool cards.
- Remove the lava tile furthest down the path towards the tent and place it next to the game board.
- Tough luck! Nothing happens. (2×)
Variant 2: Reversed Game Board
Once you are familiar with the game, you can play on the other side of the game board. It features a number of special locations, such as a temple, a waterfall, or a tribe of monkeys. These locations match the 7 quest cards.
Before you start the game, shuffle the quest cards and reveal 3 of them. Remove the remaining 4 quest cards from the game. Your path through the jungle must lead past all 3 revealed locations! Whenever you reach one of the locations, turn the quest card face down.
You can adjust the game's difficulty level by reducing or increasing the number of quest cards you reveal at the beginning of the game. Feel free to combine both variants!
