Red Letter, Yellow Letter Rulebook
Table of Contents
Table of Contents
Components
- 36 Red Letter cards
- 36 Yellow Letter cards
- 148 Thing cards
Setup
-
Take all the Red Letter cards, all the Yellow Letter cards, and about a third of the Thing cards, shuffle them separately, and place them on the table to make three face-up draw decks.
-
When you are ready to begin, discard the top card from the Things deck and start playing immediately.
How to Play
Each round, there are three cards on display:
-
A Thing card, that describes the category that the Thing must be in.
-
A Yellow Letter card, that shows you the letter that the Thing must begin with.
-
A Red Letter card, that tells you the letter that the Thing must not contain.
Illustration callout on the printed page: "Butter Pecan!"
NOTE: If the Red Letter card ever shows the same letter as the Yellow Letter card, place the Red Letter card randomly into the deck to reveal a new one.
The first player to say something that fits all three cards (is the Thing, starts with the Yellow Letter, doesn't have the Red Letter) wins the round. Everybody plays at the same time, and there's no penalty for wrong guesses. Just yell 'em out!
NOTE: Feel free to let people know why their answers are wrong ("That's spelled with a U!" or "That's a bay, not a river!"), but in general, be cool about this.
If you gave the winning answer, choose one of the three cards on display (Red Letter, Yellow Letter, or Thing) and place it in front of you as your scoring pile.
That reveals the next card under the one you chose. Play continues immediately with players shouting out the next correct answer.
Don't use the same answer again for the same Thing!
If at any point, there's no correct response for the current cards, or if everybody's stumped, have everybody raise a hand in agreement, then discard the top card of the Things deck to change the category.
If the Things deck runs out, get another stack of cards from the box and refill the deck.
The first player to collect three cards of each type (three Red Letters, three Yellow Letters, and three Things, for a total of nine cards) immediately wins the game.
NOTE: You cannot take more than three cards of the same type. When you win a round, if you already have three cards of one type, you must take a card from a different deck.
In the unlikely event that one of the Letter decks runs out, or the only letters remaining are the same letter, the game ends immediately (most cards scored wins).
You can't spell F-U-N without letters!
Quick-Start Guide
How to Play, Basically
-
Place the three decks of cards (Red Letter, Yellow Letter, and Thing) face-up on the table.
-
When you are ready to begin, discard the top card from the Things deck and start playing immediately.
-
The first player to say something that fits all three cards (that is in the Thing category, starts with the Yellow Letter, and doesn't have the Red Letter) wins the round.
Example: "BUTTER PECAN!"
-
If you gave the winning answer, take a card from the three on display and place it in front of you, which simultaneously reveals the next card so players can start giving answers for the new combination.
-
Keep playing until someone collects three cards of each of the three types (a total of nine cards). Remember, you cannot take more than three of the same type.
-
Play again, if you feel like it.
