Railways of Portugal is an expansion map for Railways of the World, for 2 to 4 players. It requires the components of the base game Railways of the World or Railways of Nippon. The expansion's rules are the same as the base game's, with the following changes.

Setup

During setup, place 3 goods cubes in Açores, 3 goods cubes in Madeira, and 2 goods cubes in each of the remaining cities.

In this expansion, the baron cards are replaced by goal cards. Randomly deal 2 goal cards to each player; each player keeps only 1. For the remaining goal card, the player receives points at the end of the game if the goal is achieved.

Although there are no black cities at the start of the game, randomly place the black cubes together with the other cubes.

Shuffle all 7 Service Bounties and randomly reveal 4 of them at the start of the game. Remove the remaining 3.

Sea Routes

Railways of Portugal has 10 sea routes. Each route counts as 1 connection for all goals. As an action in a round, a player may create a sea route for $6 by placing a marker on a free route space.

A player may not have more than 1 route between Madeira and Sagres, and not more than 1 route between Açores and Lisboa.

When moving a goods cube between Madeira and Sagres, or between Açores and Lisboa, the active player chooses which of the existing routes to use. The owner of the chosen route receives an income of $1.

Cost of a new route: land $2, water $3, mountains $4, sea $6.

Connection to Lisboa

Each player may build only 1 route to Lisboa, by land or by sea, per turn (a turn consists of 3 rounds). The black hex next to Lisboa may not be used.

Açores & Madeira

At the end of each turn, Açores and Madeira each receive 1 new additional goods cube, drawn at random from the bag (a symbol was added to the phase table on the game board as a reminder). This phase is played only until the Industrial Era begins (see below).

Urbanizing Black Cities

The cost to urbanize a black city is $5.

Industrial Era

The Industrial Era begins as soon as a black city appears in the game. This can happen through:

  1. A black city is urbanized for $5; or
  2. As soon as 3 empty-city markers appear in the grey cities, you immediately place a black city tile on the grey city hex that has just become empty. Do not place new cubes on this tile, as when urbanizing.

Important: As soon as the Industrial Era begins, Açores and Madeira no longer receive a cube at the end of the turn.

End of the Game

The number of empty-city markers that trigger the end of the game depends on the number of players:

  • 2 players: 9 empty-city markers
  • 3 players: 10 empty-city markers
  • 4 players: 11 empty-city markers

Do not forget to subtract 1 Victory Point for each loan. The winner is the player who has advanced furthest along the track.

Because the map becomes crowded, remember that players may build crossing routes as needed, but may not redirect other players' routes. The cost of building a crossing is the same as for a normal route. Crossings may be built only where they cross any already existing route.

Translation Notes

  • The source insert prints the word for points as "окчи" in the setup section. This is a misprint for "очки" (points), and it is translated here as "points".
  • The source's "Hints (4)" entry is translated from "Подсказки (4)" as it appears in the component list.
