Components

Game board, 4 detectives, 4 x 9 clue tokens, 40 tip cards, 150 clue cards, 3 clue boxes, 4 detective pads, 4 pencils and 1 die.

2-4 players, from age 9.

Object of the Game

You are detectives at the town's detective agency and must help the police chief find the answers to WHO the thief is, WHAT the thief has stolen, and WHERE the thief is hiding. Read sections A-C before you start playing; the rest can be read during the game.

The first player to reach the police station with three correct answers wins the game and becomes the town's new master detective.

Setup (Gör er klara)

Choose the difficulty you want to play:

  • Easy: from age 9 (one star).
  • Hard: from about age 12 (two stars).
  1. Each player (or team) chooses a detective, a detective pad and a pencil.
  2. Place one new clue card in the front of each clue box, for the difficulty you have chosen. The chosen difficulty must face forward. Remember that you may NOT read the clue cards before you start playing. All detectives read from the same three clue cards.
  3. Shuffle the tip cards and place them face down in a pile next to the board.
  4. Sort the clue tokens into nine piles. Next to each clue space on the board there should be a clue token matching that space. Place one token per detective beside each clue space.
  5. Place all detectives on the Detective Agency (Start) space. Give the die to the youngest detective, who begins. Play then passes clockwise to the next detective.

Board key:

  • Detective Agency (Start)
  • Police Station (Goal)
  • Jail
  • Inn
  • Tip space
  • Taxi space
  • VEM clue spaces (blue, green and yellow VEM clues)
  • VAD clue spaces (blue, green and yellow VAD clues)
  • VAR clue spaces (blue, green and yellow VAR clues)

Playing the Game (Klara upp stölden)

On your turn, roll the die and move around the town. You choose which direction to go, but you may not go forward and back during the same turn. Play then passes clockwise to the next detective.

When you arrive at a clue space you must stop and read the clue. You must stop even if you have rolled more steps than you need.

To read a clue (example: you want to read the green VEM clue):

  1. Go to the clue space.
  2. Open the flap and read the clue.
  3. Write the clue in your detective pad.
  4. Close the flap again.
  5. Take a clue token.

A detective may never hold two identical clue tokens. Remember to hide your notes so that the other detectives cannot read them.

You decide yourself in which order you collect the clues. You do not need to collect all the clues if you think you can solve the crime anyway.

HELP! Have you collected all three clues for WHO, WHAT or WHERE but still cannot work out the answer? Then go to the Inn for help (see Inn below).

When you believe you have found the answers to WHO, WHAT and WHERE, hurry to the police station. You may enter the police station even if you have rolled more steps than you need. See Police Station below.

Special Spaces

Tips

If you land on a tip space, draw a card from the tip pile and read it aloud. When you have used the card, put it back at the bottom of the pile. If you receive a card that allows you to read a clue, do not move your detective to a clue space.

Taxi

If you land on a taxi space, during the same turn you may travel to one of the other taxi spaces. You do not have to take the taxi if you do not want to.

Jail

During the game you risk being sent to jail, where you miss one roll. After that you roll the die and go back out into the town.

Inn

If you cannot work out an answer, you can get help from the town's old master detectives who sit at the inn. You may enter the inn even if you have rolled more steps than you need, but you will only be let in if you have collected all three clues for the answer you want help with.

For example, to get help with the answer to WHO the thief is, you enter the inn and do as follows:

  1. Hand in your three VEM clue tokens (blue, green and yellow).
  2. Roll the die.
  3. Outcome depends on the die roll, as shown in the illustration on the board:
    • ÄSCH! (Ouch!): He cannot work out the answer. Stay where you are and try again the next time it is your turn. If you have tried three times in a row without success, then the next time it is your turn you take the clue card from the clue box and read the correct answer. Roll the die and hurry back out into the town.
    • HÄRLIGT! (Excellent!): He has worked out the answer and you may take the clue card from the clue box and read the correct answer. Then roll the die straight away and hurry back out into the town.

Police Station (Gå till polisen)

When you believe you have found the answers to WHO, WHAT and WHERE, go to the police station. You may enter the police station even if you have rolled more steps than you need. Then do the following:

  1. Write your three answers, for WHO, WHAT and WHERE, in the grey fields of your detective pad.

  2. Take the three clue cards from the clue boxes and read the correct answers. The answers are printed next to the clues. Make sure the other detectives CANNOT see the answers.

  3. Ask yourself: Do you have three correct answers?

    • NO (NEJ): Go to "If your answers are wrong" below.
    • YES (JA): Go to "If your answers are correct" below.

If your answers are wrong (SYND!)

You have lost and may no longer take part in solving the theft!

Do NOT reveal the correct answers. Put the three cards back on top of the clue boxes so that the other detectives can continue playing. If only one detective remains in the game, that detective has won and may call themselves the town's new master detective.

If your answers are correct (GRATTIS!)

You have solved the theft and won the game!

As a reward for your great effort, the police chief appoints you the town's new master detective and gives you a golden detective star. Thank you for helping to make the town's streets safe and secure again.
