Setup

Unfold the Game Board and choose a Token. Set it on one of the board's two Quip Start areas. The youngest player is the first Guesser, so they start with the Dry Erase Guesser Board and the Dry Erase Pen. Everyone else takes a Pencil and tears a Quip Slip from the Quip Slip Pad. Insert the Game DVD into the DVD player and turn on the TV.

Tip: Please sit somewhere where you will actually be able to see the TV.

The Object

Be the first player to quip your way from the Quip Start to the Finish space.

Each player will take a turn guessing who wrote which caption or description, or what we like to call a Quip. From this point forward, the person doing the guessing will be known as the Guesser. Original, we know. Players move spaces by correctly guessing who wrote which Quip or by fooling the Guesser into thinking that they wrote another player's Quip.

Let's Play

The player to the left of the Guesser, known as the Squealer, controls the DVD remote, hits the Play the Game button on the DVD menu, collects the Quip Slips at the end of the round, and reads the Quips to the Guesser.

After the Squealer presses Play the Game, the first of many random on-screen oddities will appear, and each player will write a Quip for the scene or picture that appears on the TV screen. Your Quip can be funny, clever or just plain deceptive. Remember, you don't want the Guesser to guess who wrote the Quip! Once everyone finishes writing, they put their name on the Quip Slip and pass them face down to the Squealer. The Squealer reads each player's Quip out loud, but keeps the names a secret. The Guesser can write notes to help them remember each player's Quip in the Desquiption column on the Dry Erase Guesser Board.

Note: A Desquiption is a description of the Quip, get it?

Once the Squealer has read through the Quips, they hit the Timer button on the DVD menu, giving the Guesser 60 seconds to match Quips to players. Upon request, the Squealer may read back the Quips to the Guesser, but only during the 60-second time limit. Once the Guesser has finished writing down his guesses, or the Timer runs out, the Guesser reads them out loud.

Moving

The Guesser always moves first, and moving turns always move clockwise from the Guesser.

For those of you who can't tell time, that's to the left!

For every correct guess, the Guesser moves one space on the Game Board. If the Guesser manages to match all of the players to their Quips, they advance an extra space.

Good luck with that one.

For every incorrect guess, the player who wrote the Quip advances one space on the Game Board. If the Guesser doesn't make any correct guesses, then not only does the Guesser not move, but the rest of the players advance two spaces instead of one. Players advance around the board, but they must get to a Slide space to move to the next level. Players who reach a Slide space mid-move may continue moving until they reach the next ring. When players land on a Slide space, they automatically slide their tokens to the space on the next ring. Players can share a space, but please, by all means, keep your Quips to yourselves! Once a player gets to one of the Quip Stop! spaces, they must complete a Final Challenge.

Let us explain some more…

Quip Stop! Space and Final Challenge

When the Guesser lands on the Quip Stop! space, after everyone is done moving, the Guesser attempts the Final Challenge. If the Guesser wins the Final Challenge, they move to the Finish space and win the game! If they lose, they move back one space.

One or the other, there's no gray area here.

If the Guesser didn't win, and another player reaches a Quip Stop! space during the same turn, then the other player attempts to win (but with a new Final Challenge). If two players (other than the Guesser) reach the Quip Stop! space(s) during the same turn, then the first player who is clockwise from the Guesser attempts the Final Challenge. If the first player fails, then the next player on the Quip Stop! space gets to try the Final Challenge.

Now, what is the Final Challenge exactly?

The player who lands on the Quip Stop! space automatically attempts the Final Challenge and becomes the Guesser. The other players choose up to three players to write a Quip for an on-screen oddity. Once they've finished writing, they hand the Quips face down to the Squealer. The Squealer picks their favorite Quip and reads it out loud.

Now it's the Guesser's job to guess who wrote the Quip. If the Guesser succeeds, they move into the Finish space and win! If they fail, they move back a space. Once a player has successfully won the Final Challenge, they move onto the Finish space and receive the respect and praise of all the other players for winning the game.

Quip It! Alternative Game Play

In this version, there is no Guesser. The object is to write the funniest Quip for a given on-screen oddity. One person controls the DVD remote for the entire game, but the Squealer changes each round. The person controlling the DVD remote hits New Puzzle. When the on-screen oddity is shown, everyone (including the Squealer) writes a Quip and returns their Quip to the Squealer. The Squealer reads each of them out loud. ALL THE PLAYERS (EXCEPT THE SQUEALER) VOTE FOR THE QUIP that they think is the funniest. Voting moves clockwise from the Squealer. Players CANNOT vote for their own Quip. The Squealer tallies the votes. The player with the most votes gets three points. If there's a tie, then the Squealer is the tie breaker. The Squealer chooses their first favorite, second favorite, and (if necessary) third favorite. At this point, the Squealer may pick their own Quip if they choose. First place moves three spaces, second place moves two spaces. Third place moves one space and anyone else who received a vote gets to move one space. As in the original game, players move clockwise from the Squealer. Every round, the Squealer position moves to the left. See the original Instructions for winning the game.
