Setup
Place the board so that the red squares at each end face the players.
Place one counter on each of the central yellow spaces marked 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, RUN, HIGH, LOW.
Winning the Game
The game is won by the first player who gets three pieces into the red squares nearest to him.
Rolling the Dice
The two players take it in turn to roll the five dice. Either the original roll can be accepted or the player can leave down any number, or none, of the dice and re-roll the others. He can now accept this roll or re-roll as before, picking up if he wishes any dice that have been left from the first roll. Up to three rolls are permitted and, after moving, the dice are handed to the other player.
Moving the Pieces
The playing pieces move as follows:
For a pair (e.g. two sixes) move the piece in the 6-lane one square towards you.
For three-of-a-kind (e.g. three fives) move the piece in the 5-lane two squares toward you.
For four-of-a-kind (e.g. four threes) move the piece in the 3-lane three squares toward you.
For five-of-a-kind (e.g. five twos) move the piece in the 2-lane four squares toward you.
For two pairs (e.g. a pair of threes and a pair of sixes) move the pieces in the 3-lane and 6-lane one square each toward you.
For a full house (e.g. three fours and a pair of sixes) move the piece in the 4-lane two squares toward you and the piece in the 6-lane one square toward you.
RUN, HIGH and LOW Lanes
RUN - Should you throw a low run (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) the piece in the RUN lane may be moved two squares toward. Should you throw a high run (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) the piece in the RUN lane may be moved three squares toward you.
HIGH - If the total of your five dice is 23, 24 or 25, the piece in the HIGH lane may be moved two squares toward you. If the total is 26 or more, the piece in the HIGH lane may be moved three squares toward you.
LOW - If the total of your dice is 10, 11, or 12, the piece in the LOW lane may be moved two squares towards you. If the total is 9 or less, the piece in the LOW lane may be moved three squares toward you.
NOTE - It is not possible to combine moves in the HIGH or LOW lanes with moves in the 1 to 6 lanes, but you sometimes have the choice of plays (e.g. if you end with 6-6-6-5-5 you could move three squares in the HIGH lane OR two squares in the 6-lane and one square in the 5-lane, BUT NOT BOTH).
Board Edges and Pieces
A piece cannot go beyond the back rank of red squares, so it may not always be possible to take full advantage of some rolls.
No playing piece is ever 'out of play' so even if it is on the back rank nearest to you, it can always be moved away by your opponent's roll.
When travelling up and down a lane the central space (yellow) counts as one square.
Variant
A more strategic version of QUADWRANGLE (hence the name) is to get four men (instead of three) into the red. However, this does tend to take longer!
