- 1 game board: birthday table with plate, cake, tarts and jelly dessert
- 5 cream bonnets / cream puffs
- 1 cork ball
- 1 wooden ball
- 25 round cards: guests eating different tidbits
- 1 set of game instructions
Aim of the game
Who will be puffing in a particularily skillful way and collect two cards of one kind?
Preparation
The game is played in the bottom part of the game box. Place the cork ball on the plate shown at the lower edge of the game board. There is a little hole to prevent it from rolling away. On the game board you see five different tidbits with a bigger hole: jelly desert, strawberry cake, lemon tart, chocolate tart and blueberry tart. Now you have to try to puff the ball into the hole of one of these tasty tidbits aiming your puff carefully.
The cards show what the guests are eating: Jelly cake, strawberry cake, lemon, chocolate or blueberry tart. Separate the different kinds, make a pile of each and place them face up next to the game board. Get the cream puffs ready.
The wooden ball is not needed for this variant and is kept in the lid of the box.
It's not that easy to make well-aimed puffs! You should try it several times before starting to play:
- Place the box in front of you so that you are sitting directly in front of the hole at the lower edge.
- Rest your hands on the table or cross them behind your back.
- Try to direct your breath so that the ball starts to move and, with a bit of luck and some skill, lands in one of the holes. Your lips have to be pursed – as if you want to blow out a candle or whistle.
- Try and see what happens if you make short and energetic puffs, or very careful and longer puffs.
Watch out:
- As the game board is inclined the ball rolls backwards if your puffing becomes weaker or stops all together. Except, of course, if it has landed in a hole – where it comes to a halt.
- If it rolled back and lies on the lower edge try to puff it from there. You may not put it back on the plate with your hands.
How to play
Play in a clockwise direction. The player who had their birthday most recently may start. They take the bottom part of the game box and place the ball on the plate.
Now they may puff as long as it takes for the ball to land in one of the bigger holes. Then they take a card from the corresponding pile. Then it's the turn of the next player.
Important puffing rules
- Once the ball has rolled into one of the bigger holes it can not be puffed or taken out.
- If however it lands back in the hole of the plate, you have another try.
- If a player puffs so strongly that the ball flies out of the box, they have another turn.
End of the round
The round ends as soon as the first player has collected two cards of one kind. As a reward they get a cream puff. Before the next round starts, prepare the game material as described at the beginning.
Each round, one by one, another player starts.
End of the game
The game ends as soon as the last cream puff has been distributed. Whoever has collected the most, wins the game and is named "King of Puff Pastries".
Game for professional puffers
For players aged 5+.
Aim of the game
Whoever skillfully puffs the ball into the right hole, will soon have in front of them 4 cards, thus winning the game.
Preparation
The cards are put face down, shuffled and piled up in three more or less equally high piles. The cream puffs and wooden ball are not needed.
How to play
The youngest player starts, places the bottom of the box as described in front of them and puts the ball on the plate. Then they take a card from the top of any pile and put it face up next to the pile.
What kind of dish is the guest depicted eating? The player has to try to puff the ball into the corresponding hole of the game board.
- If the player hits the right hole, they may take the card and put it in front of them. Then it's the turn of the next player, in a clockwise direction, to uncover a card and have a go at puffing.
- If the ball rolls into the wrong hole they may not take the card. Their turn is over. The following player doesn't uncover a new card but has to try to hit the hole corresponding to the still uncovered card.
End of the game
The game ends as soon as one player has taken their fourth card, thus winning the game.
Further variations
- If you want to go on puffing you play until all the cards have been distributed. The player who has gathered the most cards by puffing, wins. If there is a draw, then the player who collected the most chocolate tarts wins, as they are the most difficult to reach. If there is another draw the corresponding players are joint winners.
- The game gets more difficult,
- if you use the wooden ball instead of the cork ball,
- if you push a book or something similar underneath the border of the box, the game board gets even more inclined.
Variation for solo players
Whoever wants to play on their own, tries to hit one by one and without making a mistake a certain number of holes. As a reward the player takes the corresponding cards. They can play according to the rules of the basic game or the variation for professionals.
Whoever wants can write down their score and go on trying to improve their personal record.
