Gambler

Card name: Gambler (German title on the card: "Spieler")

The card shows a man in the artwork, the name "Gambler" with "Spieler" in the lower corners, three printed values, and a row of icons at the top.

Printed values (front scan, BoardGameGeek image 2923682):

  • Shield with a number: 3
  • Gold coin with a number: 8

Printed values (front and back scan, BoardGameGeek image 3956195):

  • Shield with a number: 2
  • Gold coin with a number: 6

The two printings differ only in these two numbers. The card's text rule is the same on both.

Icon key

The icons on the card are rendered as words:

  • Face-down deck of cards with a gold dot = draw or reveal from the top of the deck
  • Row of four card faces = four cards
  • Crossed swords with a black bar drawn through them, beside a STOP sign = you must not fend off ships with swords
  • STOP sign (red octagon) = the prohibition that goes with the crossed-out swords
  • Black arrow followed by "+1" and a card face = one additional purchase
  • Shield with a number = printed shield value (see printed values above)
  • Gold coin with a number = printed coin value (see printed values above)

Rule

The rule as printed on the card (icon reading, with wording from the BoardGameGeek description):

  • As the active player, you may reveal the next four cards at once in the discover phase (the deck icon followed by the row of four cards).
  • This grants you one additional purchase (the arrow followed by "+1" and a card).
  • You must not fend off any ships. This is shown by the crossed-out swords and the STOP sign.
  • Taxes are dealt with in the order in which the cards are revealed.
  • After that, you are forced to end your discover phase.

Note on the wording: The icons on the card show the four-card reveal, the additional purchase, and the prohibition on fending off ships. The sentences about taxes being dealt with in the revealed order and about the forced end of the discover phase are taken from the BoardGameGeek item description, not from a printed icon or text on the card, and are marked here as such.
