Components
The official how-to-play illustrations show the following cards and pieces:
- A card deck with a light blue card back printed with the Poo Pocalypse logo.
- Poo Peasant, Fecal Fighter and Crap King cards, each marked with a corner icon. The icons are green (Poo Peasant), purple (Fecal Fighter) and yellow (Crap King).
- Swirly cards, marked with a blue swirl icon in the corner. They carry poopy powers.
- A round Poo Token, printed "Pass the Poo".
How to Play
-
Deal everyone five cards. The player wearing the most poop colors goes first.
-
Perform any 2 of 3 possible actions on your turn.
- Draw a card from the pile.
- Place a card in your pyramid.
- Play a Swirly card (attack cards with poopy powers).
- You can do any action twice.
- Red Swirly cards don't count as an action. Play as many as you want.
-
Pass the Poo Token clockwise. The next player takes their turn.
-
Defend your pyramid from Crap Attacks. See "Crap Attacks" below.
Building Your Poo Pyramid
Stack 3 Poo Peasants, 2 Fecal Fighters, and 1 Crap King to form your pyramid.
The how-to-play illustration shows the finished pyramid in three levels:
- Top: 1 Crap King.
- Middle: 2 Fecal Fighters, one on each side of the Crap King.
- Bottom: 3 Poo Peasants.
The example pyramid in the illustration uses these cards: Abraham Lincoln Log (Crap King); Admiral Anaconda and The Great Poo-dini (Fecal Fighters); Stool, Toot-sie Roll and Rope Cutter (Poo Peasants).
Swirly Cards
Swirly cards are played as one of your actions and attack cards with poopy powers. The how-to-play illustration gives this example:
- Plungie the Plunger (Swirly card): "Unclog the pipes! Everyone passes their hand to the right."
The publisher's material gives no general rules for Swirly card effects beyond the on-card text. See "Gaps in the Source."
Crap Attacks
A Crap Attack is a way for opponents to attack your pyramid in between turns.
Example from the publisher: you lay down a Poo Peasant on your turn. Immediately after, someone Crap Attacks you by laying down a card of the same class on top of your card (in this case, a Poo Peasant).
Then you go back and forth until someone can't or chooses not to play.
- If you win, you only keep the top card in your pyramid and discard the rest. The how-to-play animation shows this result as "You win! Keep top card."
- If you lose, the illustration shows "You Lose. Discard all cards."
All the cards go to the discard pile.
Winning the Game
The first player to finish a Poo Pyramid wins.
Gaps in the Source
The publisher's how-to-play material is a quick-start guide and does not state the following. These are not filled in here:
- Card classes: Crap Attacks require "a card of the same class," but the material does not define the classes beyond the corner icons and the pyramid makeup.
- Red Swirly cards: the material says Red Swirly cards do not count as an action, but does not define which Swirly cards are Red, or how non-Red Swirly cards are used.
- Swirly card effects: only the Plungie the Plunger example is given. The effect of every other Swirly card is not stated.
- Losing a Crap Attack: "All the cards go to the discard pile" in the text, and "Discard all cards" in the illustration, do not say whether this applies to the defender's whole pyramid or only to the cards played in that exchange.
- Draw pile: what happens when the draw pile runs out, and whether discards are reshuffled, is not stated.
- Hand limit: whether there is a maximum hand size, and how cards are refilled, is not stated.
- Pyramid placement: exact placement rules for pyramid cards beyond the three-level layout shown are not stated.
