Goal of the Game
Each player works as a delivery person for the restaurant. Whoever has earned the most money at the end of the game is the winner. You are the new pizza chef of La Casa dello Chef, congratulations!
Setup
Set up the game as follows.
-
Place the board in the middle of the table. Choose a colour and place your pawn at the start of the score track, the name plate of the restaurant. Each delivery person receives 8 pizza markers and a reserved marker in the chosen player colour. In addition, you receive 1 order card for a Pizza Fantasia.
If there are fewer than 4 players, remove the remaining Pizza Fantasia order cards from the game.
-
Shuffle all cards (a) and toppings (b) and place them in the designated places on the village square (see also the picture on page 3).
-
Deal cards to each player in the following order. The next set of cards may only be dealt once the cards not chosen have been discarded.
- 5 mission cards (you keep at least 1 of these);
- 5 order cards (you keep at least 1 of these);
- 5 chef cards (you keep at most 1 of these).
If a card says "Play immediately", draw another card in its place.
-
Place the score card and the overview card next to the board.
You are now ready to play!
Setup picture (page 3), captions as printed:
-
- Place the pawns at the start of the score track.
- 2a. Shuffle the cards and place them in the restaurant; set the mission, chef and order cards apart.
- 2b. Make 12 stacks of toppings and divide them randomly over the 4 market stalls.
- During the game: if the mission, order or chef cards run out, shuffle the discard pile and place it back in the correct place. Do the same with the toppings.
Turn Sequence
The delivery person who last ate a pizza may start. Play then continues clockwise.
During each turn you perform 2 actions. These may be 2 different actions or the same action twice. You choose which:
- Take mission card(s): draw the top 4 cards of the stack. Keep at least 1. (1 action)
- Take order card(s): draw the top 4 cards of the stack. Keep at least 1. (1 action)
- Take topping(s): take all toppings from 1 market stall with the same background colour (green or red). (1 action)
- Take chef card: draw the top 4 cards of the stack. Keep 1. (1 action)
- Discard: discard 1 order card or 1 topping (1 action), or discard 1 mission card (2 actions).
Playing a chef card or delivering a pizza costs no action.
Taking Mission Cards
Draw the top 4 cards of the stack. Keep at least 1. The cards you do not keep are placed on the discard pile. You may hold an unlimited number of mission cards, but be aware that you lose money for missions not completed (see "Losing Money").
About mission cards:
- Each mission card earns you a tip of at least 5 and at most 10 coins. The amount of the tip depends on how difficult the mission is.
- Tips for completed missions are paid at the end of the game. During the game you do not have to announce that you completed a mission.
- Keep your mission cards in your hand so that other delivery people cannot look at them.
Taking Order Cards
Draw the top 4 cards of the stack. Keep at least 1. The cards you do not keep are placed on the discard pile. You may hold an unlimited number of order cards, but for pizzas not delivered you lose money (see "Losing Money").
About order cards:
- Order cards let you accept orders for pizzas. All order information is printed on them.
- Order cards not yet played are kept in your hand so that other delivery people cannot look at them.
- Once you have collected all the toppings, you can deliver the pizza (see "Delivering a Pizza").
Taking Toppings
You choose 1 of the 4 market stalls and take all the top toppings with a green or red background that lie in that stall. Toppings you have taken are laid face up in front of you so that all delivery people can see them. You may hold an unlimited number of toppings, but you may lose money for leftover toppings (see "Losing Money").
About toppings:
- With the action "Take topping(s)" you collect the ingredients for your pizzas. Each topping can be used for 1 pizza.
- Besides the 8 standard toppings there are also mystery bags. When you take the red or green toppings, you also take the mystery bags from the market stall of that same colour (see "Mystery Bags").
Taking Chef Cards
Draw the top 4 cards of the stack and keep 1. You may hold as many chef cards in your hand as you like. Chef cards that you have not played do not lose you money at the end of the game.
"Play immediately" cards:
Some chef cards say "Play immediately". This card is for all delivery people. Whoever took this card may choose 1 more chef card from the chef cards drawn that are left over. You read the "Play immediately" card aloud and place it in the open space between the market stalls. Leave the card there until it has been played. This can take several turns. Several of these cards may therefore lie on the board at the same time.
About chef cards:
- Chef cards give you special chef abilities. By playing chef cards you can bring even more strategy into the game and get in the way of the other delivery people.
- A chef card is played once and is then placed on the discard pile.
- When you have taken a chef card, place it face down in front of you. You may only take it into your hand and play it from your next turn onward. So at the start of the game you may not play a chef card during your first turn. You can play this card afterwards whenever you like, including when it is someone else's turn. Playing is not a separate action.
- If you play a chef card during someone else's turn, that person stops their action and continues once your chef card has been played. You may not play the card while they are delivering a pizza. That delivery begins with the announcement "I am going to deliver a pizza" and ends only when the pizza has been delivered.
Discarding
You may discard 1 order card or 1 topping per action to the discard pile. Discarding a mission card costs 2 actions, and with it your turn is immediately over. By discarding you avoid losing money at the end of the game for cards or toppings left over (see "Losing Money").
Delivering a Pizza
You may deliver a pizza when you have all the toppings listed on the order card. The background colour of the toppings does not matter for the delivery. A delivery is not a separate action, but you carry it out within your turn. You may decide yourself at which moment during your turn you deliver a pizza, and you may deliver an unlimited number of pizzas per turn as long as you have pizza markers.
The delivery of a pizza goes as follows (see also the example on page 7):
- Say that you are going to deliver a pizza and show your order card to the other delivery people.
- Show the toppings and place them on the discard pile next to the board.
- Place a pizza marker of your colour on the top free pizza icon next to the house where you are delivering the pizza.
- The customer pays: move your pawn forward the number of coins you have earned.
- Place your order card face up in front of you. This way you can later show that you have completed your missions.
Speed Bonus
You may receive a tip when delivering a pizza. Hungry people love speed! The board shows next to the pizza icons how large a tip you receive.
- Deliver the 1st pizza to a house: 3 coins tip
- Deliver the 2nd pizza to a house: 2 coins tip
- Deliver the 3rd pizza to a house: 1 coin tip
- Deliver the 4th pizza to a house: no tip
Example of a Delivery (page 7)
- The delivery person in this example delivers a "Pizza ai funghi". He shows the order card to the other delivery people.
- All toppings, including 1 topping of choice (see "Mystery Bags"), have been collected. He shows them and places them on the discard pile.
- The pizza has been ordered by a customer at house number 1. The delivery person places a pizza marker of his own colour on the top empty pizza icon.
- The customer pays 5 coins: 4 coins for the pizza and 1 coin tip (speed bonus) because the delivery person is delivering the 3rd pizza to this house. He moves 5 spaces forward on the score track.
Pizza Fantasia
Every delivery person has an order card for a Pizza Fantasia (see "Setup"). With this card you may deliver a pizza of your own invention. On top of the base of tomato sauce and mozzarella you prepare the pizza with as many other toppings as you like, with 1 topping as the minimum. You may use several of the same topping, for example 5 times paprika, and extra tomato sauce and mozzarella are also allowed.
You may deliver this pizza at any moment during your turn, and you decide yourself at which house you do this. The total number of toppings on the pizza equals the number of coins the pizza costs. You therefore always receive at least 3 coins for this pizza (tomato sauce + mozzarella + at least 1 other topping).
After the delivery you place the order card with your other order cards for delivered pizzas. Apart from 1 tomato sauce and 1 mozzarella, you place the other toppings used on your order card. This way you can show whether you used your Pizza Fantasia to complete missions.
Wrong Delivery
You may deliver a pizza to the wrong house. To do this, you use a random order card. Gather the toppings on the order card but choose a different house to deliver to. Place the pizza marker at the house of your choice. For this wrong delivery you receive no money. The delivery does count for your missions and for the stacking bonus (see "Calculating Tips and Losses").
Mystery Bags
A mystery bag is a surprise bag from the market vendor. In it you can find 1 or more ingredients. They are the leftovers of the market stall, a sustainable little package. Sometimes the ingredients inside are still good, but sometimes you are unlucky and get a rotten topping.
You turn over a topping with a mystery bag immediately. If there are 1 or more good toppings on it, place it with your other toppings. For a rotten topping, carry out the corresponding action(s).
Different kinds of ingredients can be in a mystery bag:
- Topping of choice: you choose which topping it is when you deliver.
- Double topping: 2 toppings that you can use for 1 pizza.
- Premium topping: for each premium topping you receive 2 extra coins at delivery for your pizza.
- Rotten topping: if you take a mystery bag with a rotten topping, you must discard all of the depicted toppings you have (for example all tomato sauce). Depicted toppings that you took together with the mystery bag are also discarded. The only way to keep your toppings from rotting is to discard the mystery bag directly or to swap it with another delivery person. This is only possible if you have a specific chef card to do so.
When you discard your toppings because of the rotten topping, you may immediately place the mystery bag on the discard pile, or you may keep it. Keeping a rotten topping can be handy if you do not need an ingredient (for now). As long as the mystery bag is in your possession, you must discard those toppings as soon as you take them from the market stall. The topping of choice, the double topping and the premium topping cannot rot and may therefore be kept.
If you have no toppings that belong to the rotten topping, you take the mystery bag into your possession. When you then take the topping that belongs to the mystery bag, you place it on the discard pile immediately. Each time you discard a topping through rotting, you may again decide whether to discard the mystery bag as well or keep it in your possession.
Want to get rid of a rotten topping? This can be done in several ways:
- You discard the mystery bag (1 action, see "Discarding");
- You take 1 or more toppings that belong to the mystery bag and discard these toppings together with the mystery bag (discarding is not a separate action in this case);
- You use a chef card that lets you get rid of a topping.
Reserving a Topping
Do you see a topping on the market that you want, but it is not your turn? Place your reserved marker on it to reserve the topping. Until it is your turn, nobody may take that topping or place their own reserved marker over it. The other toppings in that stall may still be taken. When it is your turn you must take the topping in your first or second action, or with a chef card. Taking it goes the same as usual.
After you have used the reserved marker, you place it face down in front of you. You may not use it again for the rest of the game.
End of the Game
When the 1st delivery person places their 8th pizza marker, the final round is triggered. After that, every other delivery person gets 1 more turn. Delivery people who have placed their 8th pizza marker may no longer take order cards.
Once everyone has had a turn in the final round, all delivery people return to the restaurant (but leave the pawns where they are for now!). Now the additional tips and losses of everyone are calculated (see "Calculating Tips and Losses"). The delivery person with the most money wins the game and becomes the pizza chef.
Calculating Tips and Losses
During play you kept track of the delivery money from the pizzas on the score track. The speed bonus you received immediately during play (see "Delivering a Pizza").
At the end of the game you additionally receive your extra tips, and losses are calculated. You begin with the delivery person who placed their 8th pizza marker first. Then you continue clockwise with the other delivery people.
You receive tips for completed missions and for delivering several pizzas to the same house. You add up the tips on the score track, on top of the money received during the game.
Completed Missions
Each mission card shows how much tip the completed mission yields. For each mission you have completed, count the number of coins with your pawn on the score track.
Stacking Bonus
If you delivered more than 1 pizza to the same house, you receive an extra tip. The following applies:
- 2 pizzas delivered to the same house: 3 coins tip
- 3 pizzas delivered to the same house: 6 coins tip
- 4 pizzas delivered to the same house: 10 coins tip
Losing Money
If you do not complete an action, you lose money. The following applies:
- For each mission not completed you lose 5 coins;
- For each order not delivered you lose 2 coins;
- For each topping left over you lose 1 coin per topping. This also applies to mystery bags. For a double topping you therefore also lose 1 coin. Toppings meant for undelivered orders are returned without losing extra money.
Example (captions as printed in the rulebook): a delivery person still has these cards and toppings when the game has ended: an order card for "Pizza al prosciutto di Parma" (not delivered) and a mission card "Deliver your last pizza first" (not completed), plus several toppings.
- The toppings shown in the first group are meant for the undelivered order: "For these toppings he loses no extra money, because these were meant for the undelivered order."
- The toppings shown in the second group are not meant for the undelivered order: "For these toppings he loses 2 coins, because these were not meant for the undelivered order."
- "For the undelivered order he loses 2 coins."
- "For the uncompleted mission he loses 5 coins."
In total the delivery person loses 9 coins. He moves back 9 spaces with his score pawn.
Solo Challenge: Pizza Challenge for 1
Get promoted to pizza chef and beat your earlier scores. Playing Pizzachef on your own is just as challenging!
Solo Setup
Set up the game as described in "Setup" (pages 2 and 3), but make the following changes:
- Remove the chef cards marked with the yellow pen, and the mission card with the striped banner, from the game. Do the same for the reserved marker.
The page illustrates the marked cards. The chef card (marked with the yellow pen) reads: "Choose a delivery person who places 1 of their order cards face up. Whoever wants to deliver this pizza must first have all the toppings for it." The mission card (with the striped banner) is labelled "Mission" and reads: "Deliver your last pizza first."
-
Choose a colour pawn and place it on the starting point. This is your score pawn. Choose a second pawn; this is your action pawn. Place it on space 7: this is the number of actions you have left.
-
You take 6 mission cards, 6 order cards and 6 chef cards. Of these you keep at least 1 mission card, at least 1 order card and at most 1 chef card.
Note: this applies only to the setup. During your turn you draw 4 cards in 1 action and keep at least 1 order card or mission card, or at most 1 chef card.
Solo Goal
You have finished the game when you have completed at least 2 missions and placed all 8 pizza markers. With your score pawn you keep track of how much money you earn. You can use it to track and beat your own top score. If you have actions left at the end, add these to your score pawn.
Note! Did you deliver your 8th pizza but not complete your missions? Or did you run out of actions before your missions were completed, or before all pizzas were delivered? Unfortunately, becoming pizza chef is not in the cards for you. (You can of course try again right away...)
Solo Adjustments During Turns
If you play on your own, the following (additional) rules apply:
- For each action you take, move your action pawn back 1 space.
- A delivered pizza gives you 3 actions (you move your action pawn forward).
- If you take a chef card, you must wait at least 1 action before you can use it.
