Contents and Layout

Components as labelled on the printed layout sheet:

  • Game map (the board, laid out in front of the TV)
  • Pirate ship tokens (x 4)
  • Gold Booty cards (x 25), Silver Booty cards (x 25), Rum Booty cards (x 25)
  • Fortune cards (x 30)
  • Treasure Hunt cards (x 4)

The Cards

Treasure Hunt Cards. Your Treasure Hunt card contains your secret mission. Collect the booty shown here and bury it at X Marks the Spot to win the game.

Fortune Cards. Collect Fortune cards on your travels. Use them to bring you luck in sticky situations or to defend yourself in battle. Once played, return them to the bottom of the Fortune card pile.

Booty Cards. Booty cards come in three types (Gold, Silver and Rum) and in three amounts (20, 30 and 40). Collect Booty cards in battles or other pirate shenanigans.

Game Set-up

  1. Lay out the game map in front of the TV.
  2. Each choose a pirate ship token and place it on the matching home port.
  3. Put all dice within easy reach.
  4. Sort the cards into separate decks and shuffle each deck. Deal each player the following cards, face down:
    • 3 Booty cards (1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Rum)
    • 1 Fortune card
    • 1 Treasure Hunt card
  5. Look at your cards. Keep them secret from the other pirates.
  6. Take a look at your Treasure Hunt card to see what booty you need to find to win the game.
  7. The youngest pirate goes first.

DVD Set-up

  1. Start the DVD.
  2. The intro will play and the Main Menu will appear on the screen.

Moving

  • You can choose to move fewer spaces than your die roll if it suits your pirating purposes.
  • You cannot go back on yourself in the same turn.
  • You can move sideways, up or down, but not diagonally.
  • You cannot land on, or pass through, a space occupied by another pirate ship.
  • You cannot sail across land.
  • You cannot end your move on the same square you started on.

Note: You cannot move if you are blocked in by other pirates, in Jail or on Rum Runner Island. When this happens, miss a turn.

Trade Wind

When you roll the Trade Wind symbol on the movement die, select Trade Wind from the Main Menu on the DVD. The DVD will reveal how strong the wind is and how many spaces your ship can move.

Entering a Code

Each space on the map has a unique co-ordinate (DVD code) made up of the numbers from the horizontal and vertical sides of the map.

To enter the DVD code for the space you are on:

  1. Select the DVD code window from the Main Menu and press Enter.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to scroll through the numbers until they match the horizontal (red) and vertical (black) numbers found on the map.
  3. Press Enter to select.
  4. The DVD will then reveal what is hidden at that location. It could be an action DVD game, hidden treasure or a piece of bad luck. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: Press the menu button on your remote to display the DVD window and return to Main Menu.

Key Locations

You have different options depending on what kind of space your pirate ship is on.

Sea Space. On a sea space, you may:

  • Search the sea space. Enter the DVD code to reveal if your search for sunken treasure was successful, or
  • Do nothing and end your turn. Play passes to the next player.

Fog Space. When you enter a fog space you must stop. Any remaining movement is lost.

  • Enter the DVD code for the space or press the Fog button to reveal what lies hidden in the swirling mists.
  • Do nothing and end your turn. Play passes to the next player.

Port Space. To land on an island, you must use its port space.

  • Enter the DVD code and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the challenge. Keep your wits about you!

Home Port. Start your adventure from here. Return here to rid yourself of the Black Spot curse.

Trading Post. Set sail for the Trading Post if you want to swap booty with another pirate. Trade up to two Booty cards with any willing pirate. Your fellow trader's ship does not have to be at the Trading Post.

Jail. If you are sent to Jail, place your pirate ship on the Jail space at Port Royal. You cannot move or do battle with other pirates until you break out.

There are four ways to escape. On your next turn, you can:

  • Play a 'Royal Pardon' or 'Jailbreak' Fortune card.
  • Roll an odd number. You can then move that number of spaces.
  • Bribe a guard? Return one of your Booty cards to the bottom of the correct pile.
  • Get "bumped" (at any time). If another player is sent to Jail, you are bumped off the Jail space on to any adjacent sea space.

Marooned on Rum Runner Island. If you find yourself on Rum Runner Island, you are marooned! Place your pirate ship on the island. You cannot move or do battle with other pirates while you are here.

There are three ways to escape. On your next turn, you can:

  • Play an "Escape Rum Runner Island" Fortune card.
  • Roll an odd number. You can then move that number of spaces.
  • Get bumped by another player (at any time). Move your ship to any adjacent square.

Doing Battle

You may have to battle the other pirates to plunder their booty, or just because you fancy a good old pirate skirmish!

  • You may only do battle with a pirate within one space of you (including diagonally).
  • If you have a particular pirate in mind, use the movement part of your turn to get close to them.
  • On your turn, you are the attacker and the pirate you attack is the defender.

To Do Battle

  1. After moving, say which pirate you want to attack.
  2. Both players may play a Fortune card if they wish. Place your chosen card face down on the table. When you are both ready, flip the cards to reveal them. If anyone plays an 'Avoid Battle' card, the battle is aborted.
  3. The attacker takes the red attack die and the defender takes the blue defence die. Roll the dice.
  4. If you played a Fortune card, add these points to your dice roll.
  5. The player with the highest total wins. Note: If you tie, the battle is over. There is no winner.
  6. The loser holds up their hand of cards (keeping the values hidden from the winner). The winner may now plunder the loser's booty.
    • If the attacker wins, they steal 3 Booty cards from the defender's hand.
    • If the defender wins, they steal 1 Booty card from the attacker's hand.
  7. Return used Fortune cards to the bottom of the Fortune card pile.

You cannot do battle if you are:

  • In a port
  • At the Trading Post
  • In Jail
  • Marooned on Rum Runner Island

Cursed Booty Ahoy!

There is one Black Spot Curse card hidden in each set of Booty cards (Gold, Silver and Rum). If you pick up the Curse card (or are dealt it at the beginning of the game), you must rid yourself of it before you can go to X Marks the Spot to win the game.

[The text of the Black Spot Curse card, shown as a picture on the sheet, is not legible in the photograph and is not transcribed.]

To break the curse, do one of the following on your next turn:

  • Play a 'Rid yourself of the Black Spot' Fortune card. Return the Curse card to the bottom of the correct Booty card pile and the Fortune card to the bottom of the Fortune card pile.
  • Sail to your Home port and return the Curse card to the bottom of the correct Booty card pile.
  • Get rid of this card by other means.

Winning the Game

Once you have collected all the booty on your Treasure Hunt card by fair or foul means, you must go to X Marks the Spot to find out where to bury it.

  1. Make sure you have all the booty on your Treasure Hunt card and NO Black Spot Curse cards in your hand.
  2. Press X Marks the Spot to find out where to bury your booty.
  3. Now roll the movement die and move as normal.
  4. When you reach your X Marks the Spot location, you have won!

Beware! If you lose too much booty before you reach your destination, you must collect more treasure and go back to X Marks the Spot for a new location before you can win. You must have the full quota on your Treasure Hunt card to win.

How to Complete the Island Challenges

Every time you land at a port you must complete a challenge. Enter the DVD code for that port and follow the on-screen instructions. When you have completed the challenge, play passes to the next player.

Tip: If the DVD says you've won Booty cards and the pile is empty, too bad, matey! You'll have to think of other ways to gather your booty.

  • Use the arrow buttons to select your chosen key.
  • Press Enter to try and unlock the chest and the goodies within.

Game Credits

The printed heading is "Game Credits". Only the gameplay paragraph on secret bonus codes is transcribed below; the credits themselves and the printed copyright and product notices are omitted.

The game credits are hidden on this DVD. To unlock them, go to the code room and select the following code sequences in order: 90:85 • 20:55 • 100:25 • 30:05 • Enter. Dial up each code as if you were unlocking a safe. As soon as each code appears on screen it will be registered. ONLY PRESS ENTER after you have entered the last code. This will then unlock a secret area on the disc and the credits will then begin playing.

As well as unlocking the game credits, you may discover secret codes which allow you to claim bonus booty the next time you play. If you spot one, write it down and keep it secret. The next time you play, sail to the last map co-ordinate in the code on one of your turns. Once there, use the DVD remote to enter each code in order and claim your booty. Press Enter ONLY when you have entered the last code or your booty is lost. Codes can be used only once per game, so get in there before anyone else does.
