Preparation

Each player gets one Pinocchio card. He places it face up in front of him. The clothing cards are shuffled and dealt to the players equally. Surplus cards are put back into the box. Each player places his cards face down in a card pile on the table, without looking at them. The "long nose" cards are also placed on the table.

The youngest player begins. Then the other players follow clockwise.

Basic Rule

In turn the players put the top card of their pile face down in the middle of the table. During the game this pile of clothing cards gets higher and higher.

For example, when a player has a pair of "blue shoes" put on this pile, the next player should place a card with the same type of clothing or a card with the same colour face down on the pile in the middle of the table. So a on the pair of "blue shoes" a pair of "yellow shoes" or a "blue cap" would fit.

When a player has no fitting clothing card, then he must lie. He announces a fitting piece of clothing and puts the card face down on the pile in the middle of the table. For example, he asserts the card he put on the pile is a "blue trousers" card, but actually it was a "red shirt" card.

The Game

The player who takes his turn must do the following three actions one after the other:

  1. Doubts or No doubts.
  2. Draw a card and place it face down on the table.
  3. Announce a piece of clothing.

The only exception is the player who starts. He is not able to do the first action, because no card was placed down yet.

1. Doubts or No Doubts

The player who takes his turn must decide if he doubts the card which was placed by the player to his right.

When he has no doubts, he says "No Doubts!" and continues with the second action "Draw a card and place it face down on the table".

When he doubts what was announced by the player to his right he says "Doubts!" and turns over this card. There are two possible situations:

Lied

The player to his right lied. The turned over card does not fit to his announcement.

Example 1: Andrea draws the top card from her pile, looks at it, announces "red bow tie" and puts this card face down on the pile in the middle of the table. Bella has no doubts. Next, Bella draws a card, looks at it, announces "red trousers" and puts the card on the same pile. Claudio has doubts. He turns over Bella's card. The card actually shows "blue trousers". Bella lied and therefore gets a "long nose" card.

When a player was caught lying he gets a "long nose" card which he has to put next to his Pinocchio card. So the nose of his Pinocchio gets longer.

A Pinocchio with one "long nose" card and a Pinocchio with two "long nose" cards.

The player whose turn is, turns the card face down again and continues with the second action.

Told the Truth

The player to his right told the truth. The turned over card fits to his announcement. The player who had doubts gets a "long nose" card which he has to put next to his Pinocchio card.

Example 2: Andrea draws the top card from her pile, looks at it, announces "red shoes" and puts this card face down on the pile in the middle of the table. Bella has no doubts. Next, Bella draws a card, looks at it, announces "yellow shoes" and puts the card on the same pile. Claudio has doubts. He turns over Bella's card. The card really has "yellow shoes" on it. Bella told the truth. Claudio therefore gets a "long nose" card.

The player whose turn is, turns the card face down again and continues with the second action.

2. Draw a Card and Place It Face Down on the Table

The player who takes his turn draws the top card from his pile. He looks at the card without showing it to the other players. Next, he puts the card face down on the pile in the middle of the table. The player who starts puts the first card in the middle of the table.

3. Announce a Piece of Clothing

The player must now announce a piece of clothing, e.g. a pair of "red shoes". His announcement has to fit to the piece of clothing which was announced by the player before him (see Basic Rule).

The announcement could be the piece of clothing on the card he just put in the middle of the table, but it does not need to be. He could have lied and now hopes that the other players do not doubt his announcement. On the other hand he would hope that the other players doubt his announcement when he told the truth.

Note: When there were doubts about the last card which was placed down in the middle of the table, the following player could announce a piece of clothing of his choice. This announcement could not be doubted.

Claudio had doubts about Bella's card. He turns the top card (a pair of "yellow shoes") of the clothing pile face down again. Next, Claudio puts down a clothing card and is allowed to announce e.g. "red bow tie". This announcement can not be doubted.

After he made his announcement the player to his left is next.

End of Game

When the last clothing card is placed on the pile in the middle of the table there is the chance for one last doubt. When there is a doubt, one last "long nose" card is dealt. After that the game ends.

Now every player counts the "long nose" cards next to his Pinocchio. The player whose Pinocchio has the shortest nose (the least "long nose" cards) wins.
