- 32 Pie Pieces
- 19 Objective Cards:
- 1 Decorations Card
- 14 Recipe Cards (7 Flavor, 7 Pattern)
- 4 Perfect Piece Cards
- 1 Starting Token
Object of the Game
The object of the game is to pick pie pieces one by one and use them to make your perfect pie.
The player who earns the most points for the patterns, flavors, and decorations in their pie is the winner.
Setup
Set up the 4 Objective cards that will show you how to earn points for that game:
- Place the Decorations card (Purple) face up beside the play area.
- Sort the other cards into three small stacks: Flavor Recipe (Blue), Pattern Recipe (Green) and Perfect Piece cards (Orange). Shuffle each stack separately.
- Recipes: Place 1 Flavor Recipe and 1 Pattern Recipe face up beside the play area. Put the unused Recipe cards back in the box.
- Perfect Pieces: Deal 1 Perfect Piece card face down to each player. Look at your own card, but keep it hidden. Put any unused Perfect Piece cards back in the box without looking at them.
Note: The Decorations and Recipe cards will be scored by all players in the game.
Place the Starting token in the middle of the play area, showing the side matching the number of players: 3 arrows for a 3-player game, 4 arrows for a 2 or 4-player game.
Shuffle the 32 Pie pieces face down around the Starting token.
For a 3-player game, remove the 8 pieces showing a darker color crust and put them back in the box.
Flip the Pie pieces face up (one piece at a time) to create the starting pies in the middle of the play area. Place the first piece of each pie beside one of the arrows on the Starting token and build up each pie (one pie at a time), by adding the next piece flipped up clockwise from the first piece until 7 other pieces have been added to complete the pie. When one pie is complete, begin a new pie by placing pieces in front of the next arrow. Continue until all Pie pieces have been placed face up.
Playing the Game
The oldest player goes first. Players then take turns in clockwise order. On your turn, pick a piece from the middle of the play area, and then use it to make your pie.
Pick a Piece
Choose a piece from any of the remaining pies in the middle of the play area:
- When you pick a piece from a complete pie, you must pick the single piece that the arrow on the Starting token is pointing at.
- When you pick a piece from a pie with missing pieces, you must pick one of the next pieces from the pie, going either clockwise or counterclockwise from the missing piece(s).
Note: if there is only one piece left in a pie, that is the only option for that pie.
Make Your Pie
- On your first turn, place the piece of pie you picked in front of you.
- On all following turns, place each new piece directly next to a piece already in your pie.
You may not leave gaps in your pie or change the arrangement of your pieces after they have been placed.
2-Player Game
In a 2-player game, each player makes 2 pies. You still pick only 1 piece at a time, but on each turn, you may add your new piece to either one of the two pies you are making. You don't have to finish making the first pie before you start to make the other one.
Once you have picked a piece and added it to your pie, it is the next player's turn. Keep taking turns until all the pieces have been picked and everyone has made a whole pie with 8 pieces of their own.
End of the Game
When everyone's pies are complete, each player adds up how many points each player's pie is worth, based on the cards in play this game. The cards in play score points in the following ways:
Decorations Card
Look at all the chocolate shavings, frosting and shapes on your pie:
- Chocolate Shavings: Earn 1 point each.
- Frosting: Earn 3 points for each separate pair of adjacent pieces that both have frosting. (If you have three frosted pieces in a row, that's still only one pair, worth 3 points).
- Shapes: Earn 5 points for each complete set of three different shapes "heart + flower + star" anywhere on your pie.
Recipe Cards
Look at the Pattern and Flavor Recipe cards in play for this game and count up how many points the arrangement of pieces in your pie are worth for each card.
Flavor Recipes
- Kiwi: Score 3 points for each Kiwi piece located between two pieces of the same flavor, immediately next to each other. The flavor of those pieces can be Kiwi.
- Four Seasons: Score 4 points for each separate set of pieces of all four different flavors located anywhere in your pie.
- Apricot & Strawberry: Score 3 points for each opposite set of Apricot and Strawberry pieces.
- Strawberry Sandwich: Score 2 points for each Strawberry piece located in between two different flavors, immediately next to each other. One of those two flavors can be Strawberry.
- Blueberry Delight: Score 3 points for each Blueberry piece in between two pieces of the same flavor, both located with exactly two spaces in between them and the Blueberry piece. The flavor of those pieces can be Blueberry.
- Blueberry & Kiwi: Score 2 points for each set of Blueberry and Kiwi pieces (one of each) located anywhere in your pie. They do not need to be next to each other. Each piece can only be counted in one set.
- Apricot Delight: Score 2 points for each Apricot piece in between two pieces of different flavors, both located with exactly one space in between them and the Apricot piece. One of those two flavors can be Apricot.
Pattern Recipes
- Opposite: Score 2 points for each pair of the same flavor located opposite from each other.
- Mirror Image: Divide your pie in half and score 2 points for each pair of the same flavor located as mirror images of each other.
- Triangle: Score 4 points for each group of 3 pieces of the same flavor located with exactly one space in between each other.
- Side by Side: Score 2 points for each pair of the same flavor located immediately next to each other.
- Alternate: Score 5 points for each group of 4 pieces located as two alternating pairs of flavors.
- Triplet: Score 4 points for each group of 3 pieces of the same flavor located immediately next to each other.
- Split Pair: Score 2 points for each two pieces of the same flavor located with exactly two spaces in between each other.
Note: Each Pie piece can only be scored one time per each Recipe card.
Perfect Piece Cards
Finally, reveal your Perfect Piece card and earn 1 point for each piece in your own pie that matches the flavor on your card.
Winning
The player who earns the most points wins the game and is awarded the title of Best Pastry Chef of the Year!
If two or more players are tied with the most points, the tied player who last took their turn is the winner.
Scoring Example for One Player
Decorations
- Chocolate Shavings: The pie has 3 chocolate shavings, so they earn 3 points for Chocolate Shavings.
- Frosting: The pie has two complete pairs of adjacent frosted pieces, and each pair is worth 3 points, so they earn a total of 6 points for Frosting.
- Shapes: The pie doesn't have a complete set of all shapes; it has 2 hearts and 1 flower, but no stars, so they earn 0 points for Shapes.
Flavor Recipe
- Kiwi: The pie contains one Kiwi piece and it is between two pieces of the same flavor (Strawberry). So they earn 3 points for their Flavor Recipe.
Pattern Recipe
- Opposite: The pie contains two pairs of opposite pieces of the same flavor (one pair of Strawberries and one pair of Blueberries). Each pair is worth 2 points so they earn a total of 4 points for their Pattern Recipe.
Perfect Piece
- Strawberry: The pie contains 3 Strawberry pieces, so they earn 3 points for their Perfect Pieces.
This gives the player a total score of 19 points.
