Overview

In each round, a random photo will be placed in front of each player. Then each player gets a hand of photos to divide between the other players. You want to divide the photos so they "fit" the photos in front of each player as well as possible. If the other players recognize your photo as being placed there deliberately, you will both score points. But if they prefer a random photo to yours, none of you will get any points.

The first player to reach 20 points will win.

Setting Up the Game

  1. Shuffle the cards and place them in a face-down deck.
  2. Place all the scoring tokens aside.

Components: 120 cards; scoring tokens: 42 x 1 point, 12 x 5 points, 6 x 10 points.

Playing the Game

A game of PickPic is made up of several rounds. Each round consists of 4 phases:

  1. Reveal a card
  2. Give cards
  3. Rank cards
  4. Evaluate scores

1. Reveal a card

Draw one card and place it face-up in front of each player. Place the cards, so they are visible to all the other players.

2. Give cards

Each player draws a secret hand of cards equal to the number of players minus one (except in a 3-player game, see 3-player game below). For example, each player draws 3 cards in a 4-player game. Then the players give each other player exactly one card from their hand. You will want to give each player a card that has something in common with the card in front of them. This can be anything you wish – the story it tells, the theme, the colors, the objects shown, the feelings it evokes, etc.

Place the cards given to each player face-down next to their revealed picture card (they can be placed in stacks). Players may not yet look at the cards they just received.

3. Rank cards

When all players have received exactly one card from each of the other players, draw one random card from the deck and shuffle it into your stack of cards without revealing it. Now look at the cards in your stack and rank them. Place them face up in order, with the one you think has most in common with your photo closest to it.

All players do this simultaneously, and when everybody is ready, you move on to the evaluation.

Communication: It is not allowed to give any hints what-so-ever to the other players. And make sure never to show your cards.

4. Evaluate scores

Evaluate each player one at a time. The player points at the card that he ranked highest. Then the player who played that card reveals themselves. Both players receive one point. Then continue to the next card. However, when you reach the card that was given at random, stop (you will know, because nobody claims it). No more points are given, and you move on to evaluate the next player's cards.

This means, that optimally you want to rank the random card lowest (at the last position), to score the maximum points for yourself. And the other players want you to rate their card higher than the random card to also score a point. In addition, there are also two ways to score bonus points:

  • The player who played the highest ranked card (if it wasn't the random card) receives 2 points instead of 1.
  • A player who manages to place the random card at the very last position gets 1 bonus point.

End of the Round

After each player's cards have been evaluated, discard all the cards used during this round.

End of the Game

At the end of the round, if one or more players have reached 20 points, the game ends and the player with the highest points is the winner. In case of a tie, share the victory.

Variants

During phase 3, place the ranked cards face down in order. And when evaluating, reveal them one by one giving short comments why you ranked the photo in that position.

3-player game

In a 3-player game, each player draws 4 cards to their hand and gives 2 cards to each of the other players.
