Object of the Game
Score as many points as possible by getting your teammates to guess words.
The Word Cards
At the top of each card is the word to be guessed. Below it, the different ways of getting it guessed are shown with their associated points. See the example card.
For example, to get "coconut" guessed, you can draw, sculpt with modeling clay, mime, or hum a song. The more complicated the chosen way, the more points you win if the word is guessed.
A detailed description of the different ways of getting words guessed is given in the section "The Activities" below.
Setup
Divide all the players into two balanced teams. Choose a name for each team and write it on the score sheet.
The team with the youngest player starts. The teams play in turn.
Turn Sequence
The teams play one after the other. The game ends when all teams have played four turns each. A turn is played in the following steps:
- Appoint a Host in your team.
- The Host draws 5 Word cards and lays them out face down in front of them without looking at them.
- As soon as the sand timer is turned over, the Host looks at the first card.
- Once the Host has chosen the way of getting the word guessed, they announce it, then try to get it guessed.
- Once the first card has been guessed, the Host does the same with the other 4 cards, one after another. Each time, they must announce the way of getting the word guessed before starting.
- The Host may pass as many times as they wish: they put the card back face down and take another. If enough time remains, they may come back to the passed card(s) and try to get them guessed. They must then use the same method as the one with which they first tried to get it guessed.
- The turn ends immediately when one of two conditions occurs: either time has run out, or all 5 cards have been guessed.
- When the turn is over, if unguessed cards remain on the table, the opposing team may, after conferring, propose a single answer for each of these cards. Each correct answer earns them the points the team whose turn it was would have won.
Acceptable Answers
For each card, players may propose several answers.
The Host is allowed to make hand gestures to indicate "keep going" or "almost" to their teammates during their turn.
The Wheel
Before the start of a turn, the Host may use the Wheel if they wish. They must get the 5 words guessed using the activity indicated by the Wheel. Each time a word is guessed, the team scores double the points indicated by the Word card.
If the Wheel indicates -100, the team loses 100 points and plays its turn normally.
The Wheel is an option not to be neglected by the team that is losing towards the end of the game, to help it catch up.
Scoring
While one of the two teams is trying to guess words, a member of the other team is responsible for counting the points. Each time an answer is found, the person counting writes the appropriate number of points on the score sheet.
The team that has the most points after 8 turns (4 per team) wins the game. If there is a tie, the two teams play one more turn.
Games with 2 or 3 Players
If you play with two players, there are no teams. Play on the same team and try to win 400 points in 4 turns.
If you play with three players, one of you is "neutral". They try to guess the words each turn. The other two players compete to get the answers guessed by them.
The Activities
The different ways of getting your teammates to guess...
- Drawing - Use only a pencil and paper. You may not draw letters or numbers.
- Modeling clay - Make a sculpture with the modeling clay. You are allowed to animate your sculpture (example: to get the word "baseball" guessed, sculpt a little man holding a bat and wave that bat).
- Mime - Mime in silence. You may not touch or point at things around you.
- Hum - Make music by humming with your mouth closed, or whistling.
- Wire - Sculpt shapes with the wire. Feel free to animate the wires, as with the modeling clay.
- Clown - Make faces with your face and use onomatopoeia or other sound effects. You may not say intelligible words, nor sing or hum.
- One word - Give a single word. You may not use translations or words with the same root as the answer.
- Two words - Give two words. You may not use translations or words with the same root as the answer. You may give both words in a row, or wait for answers before giving the second. Note: if you did not manage to get the word guessed with one word, you may follow with a second word without penalty. You then win the points indicated for "two words".
- Question - Simply read the question given on the card.
